UConn VS Duke on Thanksgiving Eve

Back when Coach K was the coach, he would only schedule teams if they agreed to a neutral site and a game at Cameron. Wonder if this is still the case.

Scheyer has said he doesn't mind playing true road games. They played at Michigan State this past season. I don't believe that game was part of any conference challenge series.

Just got back from Vegas, as long as you have money it’s a good time. A lot of the reasonably priced stuff is long gone, especially on the strip.

Walking down the strip and through the hotels I felt like everyone there had a hand in my wallet. And I'm not even talking about the casino areas.

It was always Vegas for this one - that's where the folks who are paying for it wanted it.
And that is the problem…..I hope the world bets on Duke because the house is not losing money on this game…..that would just mean they paid for it twice and the people that run Vegas make sure that never happens.

I used to love Vegas in the 90s and early 2000s. Super fun, affordable, great restaurants and shows.

But it has changed dramatically. Rooms which used to be a deal are super expensive. Finding reasonable limits at table games on the strip are gone. Good restaurants are really expensive. If you aren't gambling, expect to spend around $10 for a beer at a casino bar. Going to a club - more!

Fortunately our kids have weirdly migrated to Bullhead City and we spend a lot of time in Laughlin. Not as glamorous but so much more affordable. All the fun, 1/5 the price.

Only $10? I didn't see anything that cheap. We were killing time before our Elite 8 game in 2023 and walking through a bunch of hotel lobbies (most of them are connected so you can walk through them like a mall). We figured we'd stop in one of those bars along the walk for a beer. They said we could only sit down if we ordered "bottle service". I just wanted a beer. I can't remember how much it was but it was ridiculously expensive.

Then we went to one of the sports book bars. We had been walking all day so we wanted to sit down and watch some games before heading in for our game. We sit down and the waiter comes over and says for a chair the cost was a minimum of $200 for food and drinks for each person. We tell him we're leaving in an hour and a half to go to the game so we couldn't spend that much in that time. He says we have to stand then.

Just 2 of about 6 stories I have like that for my 3 days in Vegas. On the way to the airport I gave the entire city the middle finger.

I had forgotten about buying seats in sports bars to watch the tournament. You would probably have to do the same thing for a UConn/Duke game in November. They get your money any way they can. Why wasn't it enough to take your gambling money at a huge house advantage?

Anyhow - Vegas definitely sucks compared to 20 years ago.

Same story could be told about NYC, Boston and Disney (smile)

The UConn Foundation publicly promoted a pregame party outside on the strip @ New York-New York Hotel (Tom's Urban), on the mock Brooklyn Bridge w/ DJ, food and comp drink tickets ... I don't remember paying a cover, but if so, was no more than $15-25

Football team is playing at Wyoming on Thanksgiving weekend as well. That would be nice western trip for UConn sports fans although Las Vegas to Laramie is about 12 hours. Not sure the best airport to use to make trip easier, Salt Lake City perhaps? I wouldn’t mind drive as long as weather cooperates.

Can’t believe Dookies finally agreed to play after ducking us for years…can’t wait to roast those Turkeys!

And the men's ice hockey team will be in Belfast for a tournament Thanksgiving week. I would have loved to be in Vegas for this game, but I'll be in Belfast. I wish it wasn't the same week.
