I actually was able to watch the game out here in LA. I don't have SNY, but watched it on espn360 on my large mac computer. I addressed it slightly in the game thread, but my first answer to anyone who thinks the game was boring is that they really need to become fans of another team. If you look at the current top 10 teams, UCONN has played 6 of them. That's a crazy ridiculous hard schedule. The only top 10 teams to NOT face UCONN this year are Baylor, Oregon State and Arizona State. UCONN is so much better than most teams that many games will be blowouts. My advice would be this - instead of complaining about it, find things to enjoy and appreciate about the game - first and foremost, we have limited time left to marvel at Stewie and Moriah... As fans we are currently in a magic bubble that will burst soon enough. Love and enjoy it while you can...

How great was it for Geno to start Nurse, Chong, Samuelson, Collier and Butler? Midway thru the 1st quarter, it was tied, and UCONN didn't pull away till he put the rest of the starters in, but...Cinci came out like a house on fire and played tough - like their coach. In the 4th quarter, where it was mostly those same players including Polly and Tierney for the last 3-4 minutes, UCONN still outscored Cinci 15-4.

Name me any other team in WCBB who could literally start their entire bench and still play even or slightly beat another team in their league, even one as "bad" as Cinci. How do you think SC would do with starting Roy, Cliney, Cuevas, Imbovich and White, or ND starting Maybrey, Ogunbowale, Huffman, Thompson and Johnson?

How about Collier scoring 11 points and grabbing 8 boards, and playing aggressive on both ends of the court, especially ripping rebounds away from Cinci players?

How about Butler with a double double - 14 and 10, finding her "hands" again, ripping the ball away from defenders and scoring from multiple places on the court - also, demanding the ball in the post?

How about Ekmark with 5 points, 2 assists, 2 boards and 1 steal while playing solid on both offense and defense? She looked "confident" out there. Not saying she's a future starter, but it was wonderful seeing her involved in a positive way.

And how about the other freshman - Lou - 2-5 from beyond the arc, 10 points, 3 assists, 1 steal and only 1 TO.

I'm not going to make projections for next year because there's till a ton of this year left, and a ton of time for growth and development. But I think it was an excellent showing by our youngsters and bench/role players. I get that Geno is preparing them for the long run. I know that in games from the sweet 16 and on, it's unlikely he goes beyond 7 players on the floor, but one reason the game was so fun for me to watch was seeing so many diverse players contribute in different ways when they were on the court.

A slight quibble. KLS and Nurse ARE starters. Basically, Geno didn't start the Seniors, so we got a brief glimpse of UConn next year.

For me, the sign of a great player is someone who makes his/her teammates play better. Jefferson and Stewart fit this definition to a T. The non-Seniors looked a little lost without them, especially on defense. Only playing Cinn to a 15-15 tie says to me that there is a lot of work to be done next year. But that will be interesting to watch their development.

If Geno wins it all next year, then he is definitely Coach of the century.

Geno's coaching brilliance was on fill display last night, give the role players the start and let them see where they are and how difficult it is to wear the UConn Jersey. Play to a standard not to an opponent, they now understand what that really means. There was a big thread on here about Natalie Butler and a lot of armchair evaluation, I think she proved last night with some PT, she can be effective. I see why Lou was the national HS POY, her 3-pt shooting notwithstanding, she has a myriad of skills and is much better defensively than she was at the beginning of the year. I don't see any cause for concern next year.

I thought the starting lineup was great. We started to see who can do what. Very good night for Natalie and Pheesa - especially her 3!. Geno is a master at motivation. Players need minutes to see what they can do and how difficult it is to start and play to the UCONN standard.

And hats off to Cincy - the competed and played hard.

Before (actually after ) anyone points to the 15-15 tied score as a sign that the starters were not getting it done, I would remind people that the regular starters have struggled at times in the first quarters against inferior teams as well. Temple was no masterpiece, and there have been other less than stellar first quarters this year. And it is often the same issue - a player shooting 29% from three nails two in a row to get them back into contention.
I enjoyed seeing the experiment, would have enjoyed seeing more of it during the game with different combinations. And I think it really helped Collier, Butler, and Samuelson to take some ownership. I thought Collier especially got back to being aggressive and offensive minded - something that has been missing from her for a number of weeks.

Once again Geno showed me why he's the best. I'm looking at the scoreboard with minute to tip and lineups have Chong, KLS, Butler, Gabby, & Nurse, and what the hell? Then I find out it was to give the other players a sense of you're responsible, get it done! Granted KLS & Nurse start but Ekmark got more time also, so all around it was a great move!
Hopefully he'll do it several times in last 4 games.

What a surprise to see the starting lineup. I liked it a lot. Now we know what to work on and its defense. I some players play with confidence and leadership. There was some hesitation as expected in their first starting role together I remember hearing they have been practicing together. So the jitters should be gone. Now for the rest of the season I hope to see of what I saw last nite.

One other note and Im repeating myself. IMO Natalie Butler will be an AA before she leaves UConn. She has the skills and hustle and needs more playtime and a little tweeting and she will be really good.

Geno made a great point in his post game analysis. Usually, the team that started last night's game is on the court when UConn is up by 20+ points and all they need to do is trade baskets and kill some clock. And that's exactly how they played... pretty good offense... loose defense. Now, if Cincy's wide-open three-point shots hadn't fallen, they would have been outscored handily.... but they did drop, and that will give Geno plenty of ammo for practice.
This team will be fun to watch develop next year.

I don't watch the Huskies (usually) to see competitive basketball. I watch to see excellent basketball. Going back a few years, we had some clunkers of games that were not satisfying. Uver the past three seasons, we've had a few quarters or halves in that category, but no full games.

To quote my good friend Eric, "We have limited time left to marvel at Stewie and Moriah." Both of them are not just among the best players this year. They are among the best to ever play. Kaleena was among the best to ever shoot the ball. I think we all miss her.

A couple of comments on future stars:

Napheesa is now looking to take the three-pointer. Yay! In a recent interview, she said she had no muscle. I'm guessing she'll spend a lot of time in the weight room this summer. I look forward to a big sophomore leap. She is already a ball magnet.

Lou is quite a player. She handles the ball very well, especially for her height. She uses her length effectively on defense and is a good passer. I love her midrange jumper. Her shot off the dribble seems to have more rhythm than her spot-up shot. She was a 45% or so shooter from the arc over her high school career. That--along with occasional lack of aggressiveness--has been the only thing missing in her game. She often plays like an upperclassman. The NPOY potential is obvious. She knows she is the heir apparent to Stewie.

I said before and I will say again, Lou and Napheesa will be really good next year. They both have the potential to be a big star.

Two obscurities:

1. At the start of yesterday's Cincinnati game, UConn was fielding unquestionably the greatest, most talented bench in the history of WCBB!

2. Most overlooked statistic of the game- Moriah with 2 great blocks!
I bet Moriah gave Stewie a hard time about getting only 2 blocks. ;)
