Power play in a tie game, late in the third period. Let's do this.

Do they play it safe/play for tie or pressure/take chances and go for the win?

A couple of key mental errors up a goal and some of the guys legs were heavy in the third. Take the tie thanks to Nichols.

I think they played for the tie and it worked out. I think the future for UConn hockey looks very bright.

Friday night game is on national TV on NBC-SN. Puck Drop is @ 1935.

Sunday game is noon face-off @ Webster Bank Arena in Bpt.

The Sunday game is indeed scheduled for a noon face-off. However, the Hartford Courant in its schedule of games coming up this week has been showing the game for a 2pm start. I think the Courant is working off a preliminary schedule that called for the earlier start. For what its worth, they also had the wrong time on the Colorado College game in Bridgeport, saying it was a 7pm start instead of 7:30.

Too bad they kind of turtled in the third. But they have a spurtability that made you think one break out was coming and BOOM. But not tonight in the end.

Nichols man. Wow.

Some nice things that I heard over the course of the telecast (some are paraphrased but the general points remain true):

1. Rob Nichols reminds the coaching staff and others of Andy Moog. Very high praise given there.
2. Spencer Naas is in good company tied with Jack Eichel for goals scored by a FR in the country.
3. The game was played between "two of the most recognizable brands in all of college athletics". Also (paraphrasing): "UCONN's athletics aren't just good at basketball which, of course, they have won multiple championships. But they have won national championships in field hockey, soccer, have a good baseball program and they've been good at football." <---- I just about fell out of my chair when I heard them say a nice thing about UCONN football.
4. "UCONN, throughout its history, has had only one guy play in the NHL. Todd Krygier (Anson Carter's former teammate in Washington). It won't be long before that can't be said any longer."
5. "We were talking about the UCONN athletic program and its brand earlier and here's an example: last Saturday they had an 11am basketball game that was a sell out. Then the Patriots played their playoff game at 4 and UCONN hockey still sold out 8K for their 7pm game that same night...during the Patriots game. UCONN is the professional sports team in Connecticut after the Whalers left."
6. "Despite not having an on-campus facility yet, UCONN gets tremendous support splitting their home games between Bridgeport and Hartford. They're amongst the leaders in the country for attendance."
7. "Picked by most experts to finish dead last in Hockey East in its first season, UCONN has proved everyone wrong. This is a team that actually plays its best hockey in the bigger games against ranked opponents."
8. "It won't be long before the UCONN program really takes off. Mike Cavanaugh has championship experience from his time at BC and is known as a great recruiter. What kid wouldn't want to play for that? And coaches want to coach at UCONN. It's a great hockey market in the northeast. Look at Andrew Raycroft, who spent time in the NHL in Boston. He's the goalie coach under Cavanaugh and has worked well with Nichols in getting his conditioning to where it is now so he can compete in the Hockey East grind."
9. "Both of these teams are two of the youngest teams in Hockey East with some 20 or FR playing in tonight's game. And both are competing at a very high level."

We are being outshot, 44-20. A tie works, really.

Absolutely take a tie. Nichols looked an air traffic controller at Pearl Harbor in the third period, but he got through it.
It looked like ND was on a 20 minute power play.

(BTW, did you see Mike Anthony's report of the game in the Courant? He noted that the teams will travel back east for the Sunday game @ Bridgeport - UConn by commercial to LGA and ND by charter to BDL. We'll get players and have great coaches, but we need serious conference money to level the financial end of of things, however.)

On the other hand, how much air travel does the UConn ice hockey team had to do to this year? Not much. The trip to South Bend might be the only time all year, and possibly the Penn State trip. Meanwhile, Notre Dame has to fly for any away game in Hockey East. Hockey East makes for a lot of easy travel for UConn, certainly easier than Atlantic Hockey.
