At-larges are getting tougher and tougher to come by with big conferences so deep in talent. Just gotta be able to outrun Creighton, etc. in a non-“special” talent year. Regional/super success often about getting hot at the right time. Lots of opportunity to gel despite the negative early returns.

Think it’s 22 new faces on a roster of 39?

Unfortunately it’s gonna take time to gel. Need to figure out who is gonna be the spark on this team. Hopefully Minick’s nerve issue in the elbow is not a season long issue.

Also, a number of quality players from last season are no longer on the team due to graduation, transferring to other colleges, or going professional.

That was bummer #4. And to think I was excited to see the inning by inning writeup.

Can become a vicious cycle, especially in a game as mental as baseball. Frustrated coach —> nervous players —> poor play —> repeat cycle.
This is a huge test for UConn baseball and Penders. We've given up nearly 50 runs in 4:games. MacDonald has got to be frustrated - is talent just not there? Can't remember such a horrific start!

I looked up the 2004 season since it was mentioned on the ASU telecast.

ASU beat UConn 18-2, 16-5 and 18-11 to start 2004 season. UConn’s record was 26-29-1.

Last season they lost their first five games before rebounding but were denied NCAA bid.

Neither bodes well for team but too early to panic IMHO.
