While timely hitting is nice, another side of the coin is that the Huskies need to get more runners on base. Before the Sunday game, UConn's on base percentage is .329, while the opponents on base percentage is over .360.

Another problem with the offense over the first weekend is that the Huskies are striking out way too much for my liking. In college ball it really helps to put the ball in play, and make the opponent try to make a play. UConn is striking out in almost a third of their official at bats. Mistakes are certainly a part of the college game, and if you are striking out you are limiting your chances of taking advantage of them.

While I couldn’t see the actual play, you can’t run yourself out of an inning in that situation. Still, Louisville SP must be at 70+ pitches. Should get deep into their bullpen.

Louisville starting pitcher Ferris is at 60 pitches after 2 innings.

Chris Jones has been repeating the 12:30 drop dead time for this game several times during the broadcast. No inning can start after 12:30, but any inning started before can be completed.

Bottom 4th, scoreless inning for the UConn offense. Ben Huber has struck out 7 times this weekend so far, so he will have to clean that up in future games.

When I saw him in fall it was hard not to be impressed…kid throws strikes like crazy. His stuff has good movement and his speed is so slow it’s unusual. It’s not like you see many like him so when you do face him there is adjustments to be made.

Plus you start taking pitches on him you are immediately behind since he pounds the zone….

Always like having pitchers with a variety of styles, speeds, and such on a pitching staff. Just the variety of approaches will make opposing batters have to make adjustments.

Bottom 5th, Ferrer with a 1 out single, his third hit of the game and fourth hit for the weekend. Ferrer thrown out stealing on what Chris Jones thinks was a hit and run play that didn't work. Whatever the case, Ferrer will certainly get some playing time in the future. Chris Jones continues to talk about him coming back from various injuries.

Scoreless inning for the UConn offense.

Top 6th, first 2 Louisville batters reach base. An error by Chris Brown at 3B puts runners on the corners with 1 out. Double play with Casey Dana throwing out a runner at the plate on a fly out ends the inning. 4-0 UConn.

Stefanoni at 85 pitches. Have a feeling that could be his last inning.

Bottom 6th, 2 UConn hitters reach base with 1 out, one of them on another Louisville error. Nothing comes of it. 4-0 UConn.

Top 7th, Stefanoni on the mound to start the inning. Two batters reach base with 2 out, runners at the corners. Stefanoni comes out of the game, freshman Jack Sullivan comes in to pitch for his UConn debut. Fly out ends the inning. 4-0 UConn.
