UCONN Streaming

I’m getting ready to add Hulu or UTube TV. Which is better for UCONN Bball?
I think either will work. YouTube may be a couple of bucks cheaper a month, but Hulu plus live TV also gives you ESPN+. Occasionally, we have a game on there. This past weekend the football game was on it, and baseball games often are.

In grand scheme, Hulu live is cheaper. Why? Because if you pay $15 for Hulu, Disney and ESPN+ anyway that comes off your total bill.

I like YouTubetv interface the best.

Nice timing on posting this. I know we've had many cord cutting threads over time, but the technology and services continue to evolve and I've had some questions.

I was definitely leaning toward Hulu then realized it's owned by Disney. In case you missed my other thread, I hate Disney ;). I'll probably still go that way, but it pains me. I suppose if they start raising prices faster than others, I can always cancel and switch easily.

Now a few questions for the cord cutters....

I've read that the Smart TV apps kind of suck and it's better to go with dedicated streaming hardware like the Roku Streaming Stick 4K. Do you guys agree with that, or are the TV apps generally good enough? Particularly, are the apps on a Sony Bravia good enough?

Is live TV at 1080p or the more native broadcasts formats of either 720p or 1080i? If 1080p, is it just upscaled by the hardware?

Having had DirecTV for over 25 years, I can't think of a time I couldn't get the game on one of their channels. Can I expect to get all of them even without ESPN+?

I switched to utube because had all kinds of buffering issue with Hulu. None of that with you tube

I’ve had no issues with tv apps. Haven’t seen an advantage with Roku stick for older tv. Start with apps….they r free. If u don’t like it but a Roku

Not the stick. The box. The box gives you incredible speed, audio and top shelf Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.

I feel like tv is such a big part of our life don’t go cheap on the OS.

I’ve had Hulu Live since 2019 and haven’t had too many problems, but watch most Husky games on the Fox Sports app anyway. All the streaming apps having been inching up their prices though.

My smart tv apps all work fine and I run my tv on WiFi not a direct connection. Never had an issue with quality but we have high speed WiFi which may help.

I have Hulu Live TV now, but worth noting that as of 10/14 it'll be $10 more per month than YouTube TV for basically the same channels. SNY is the only notable channel missing from YouTube TV, which doesn't affect UConn but as a Mets fan it matters to me.

The other annoying part of Hulu Live TV is you can't organize the channels. You either have alphabetical or recent. It's not really a deal breaker but it makes channel surfing hard and is a minor annoyance

Isn't SNY also missing from YTTV?

I'm in the same boat. I've been a long time TiVo user on cable, but a bug in the tech that Optimum doesn't want to pay to fix is ending their support for TiVo. Soooo, time to cut the cord.

Based on my looking into it, both Hulu Live and YTTV should get you access to all of the men's televised games by having CBS, ABC, the ESPNs, FS1, FS2, CBSSports plus TBS, TNT, and Tru for tournament time. I think they both lack SNY (along with the other regional sports nets), so you'll miss a bunch of the women's games.

Hulu will give you both NFL and MLB networks, if you care, while YTTV only has NFL Network. But, you can get Sunday Ticket on YTTV but not elsewhere.

DirectTV's upper (Premium?) plan has everything all the networks/channels needed for UConn men and adds the regional sports networks (based on your zip code), but it's also about $30/month more HLTV or YTTV.

It's been a few years now since I worked in the industry, but all of the HD broadcasts were either 720p or 1080i. The broadcasters and cable nets have to pay for the bandwidth on the satellites going out to affiliates and cable head-ends, and it's also part of the negotiation with the cable companies for bandwidth on their wires. Less popular channels often are downconverted and some are even downconverted during certain hours based on expected viewership.

We switched about a year ago from YTTV to Hulu+. It's been great. We use TV's with Roku built in to it and no problems.

About 10 years ago we cut the cord and tried Hulu and it sucked because of buffering, so we switched to YTTV and used that for several years. YTTV kept raising rates so we switched back.

Two things I don't like about Hulu Live. First you can't customize channel order like you could on YTTV. I like putting all the local stations in a group, cable news sports, etc in groupings so I could scan events by type. Also, check how many users will use the app. Some apps charge more if 3 or more people are using it simultaneously.

Otherwise great deal and easy interface.

I’ve had no problems with YouTube in the 3 years now that I’ve been streaming. However, if you’re also a UConn woman’s fan you need to look at the lineup of Hulu with SNY because you will not get all the games on YouTube Tv.

Hulu Live price is increasing October 17. Not sure about the competition

Starting with the 2025–2026 season SNY will not have Connecticut women's basketball. So that's an issue for next year only. It's a shame because they did a great job with supplemental programming, such as the pre-and post game show and the halftime show was dedicated strictly to UConn. There was a lot of additional programming, such as coaches' shows, limited access shows, and retrospectives on past teams. I think that's unlikely to be replicated under the TNT/peacock portion of the big east deal.

You exaggerate it a bit. I stream on an XBox Series X on my main TV, which has more juice than even the dedicated boxes. The sticks have gotten much better and the higher end ones are all 4k. Much better than the TV apps. I don’t doubt that the more powerful Roku, Fire or Apple box is better than the stick by a small amount.

When we get our 2nd house I’ll probably buy an Apple TV box.

I have a related question. With Hulu+ price increasing and some missing channels (namely NESN for Sox and Bruins) I started looking at options. I was reconsidering just getting Fios TV to go with my internet, but I have four TVs and the boxes are what make the price untenable. Has anybody tried using the Fios app box free and what’s the experience like?

Plus $10 for unlimited screens and even more with no ads.
But included ESPN+, Hulu (movies/content) and Disney + and has SNY.

I think that YTTV is $72.99. After next year when SNY no longer carries the woman's games, I may switch back to it. YTTV basic allows 3 streams simultaneously, but I feel like there's unlimited streaming with the 4K plan which you would get anyway.

I hve the box, stick and apps. Don’t notice a diff
Box is far superior and tech forward. What you are missing is 4k and advanced audio.

I have the Apple TV box, the picture is stellar at 4k.

I don't care about SNY, have never watched it. I'd go FUBO but it's missing TNT and TBS, which doesn't work for the NCAA tournament or NBA. Now that I think about it, I'll need to keep the cord cut if I split time in two houses.

The Best Live TV Streaming Services for Cord Cutters in 2024 Has some good information on options.

Last season, I was able to use my 1 Hulu Live account to watch the games in multiple households by inputting the Hulu info into the Fox Sports app. I'd assume it probably works the same for cable or YouTubeTV but no experience doing it. Might save somebody a few bucks
