Just two games into her UConn career, freshman Blanca Quinonez has joined the party..!! Geno is already comparing her to Sveta, but for several reasons, including that she drives him nuts. To his question about whether a shot she took was "a good shot?" Blanca replied in a puzzled voice, "If I took it, it is a good shot." (paraphrasing) I guess she didn't come all the way from Ecuador (via Italy) to take bad shots. 😀

Consider Blanca's stats in her short 2 game career:
1. Blanca was the first sub in the Ohio State game at the 4 minute mark of the 1st period for Serah.
2. She scored 18 points in 23 minutes on 7-11 shooting, including 2-3 from three.
3. In her 2 game career, Blanca is shooting 56/60/100. Those numbers will come back to earth, but she is the only player above the magical 50/40/90 mark.
4. Despite Geno's claim she leads the Free World in turnovers, Blanca is only 3rd with 6. Azzi is surprisingly in the lead with 9 (in 4 games).
5. On Sunday, BQ had 18 pts, 2 for 3 from three range, grabbed 4 rebounds, made both free throws and added 1 block and 1 assist.
6. For her 2 games, Blanca is 9-16 shooting, has 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
7. Blanca's NISE is 1.27 (Sarah's NISE is 1.24) (NISE = Naples Index of Scoring Efficiency)

Blanca's talent is obvious, but her learning curve in the UConn system is still steep. On a team with Sarah and Azzi, she doesn't need to be a superstar. Coming off the bench and playing 22+ minutes a game is a perfect role for her. From here, she only gets better..!
Thoughts?

For the rest of this season I hope that Geno uses her as 6th man off the bench with
quality minutes no matter who the opponent. She would bring instant energy to the team
even if she doesn't shoot as well as she did yesterday. There is ample evidence that the
6th man can be one of your best players....and not a typical sub. I think Geno had
that expectation Sunday when she was our first off the bench....and then she met Geno's
expectation in grand style. Big East teams...elite teams...will find her a ton to deal with.

So...a significant role off the bench this year....and then starting next season as small forward.

I think that there will be a season long competition for the first person off the bench between Blanca and Kayleigh.
If it is a defensive adjustment, I think Kayleigh gets it. If it is for an adjustment on offense, Blanca.
However, I do like a lineup with Blanca, Serah and Sarah on the floor together.

Sorry for nitpicking because you know I love your effort but Azzi's nine TO is over 4 games. Blanca's 6 is just in two. Geno, of course, was exaggerating but her passing does need to improve. And it will.

She could be the best 6th man ever. I think she has to come off the bench. Talk about a secret weapon, sorry I neglected to say, I have a howitzer in reserve.

If she shines against Michigan ( I expect she will), I will concede to all that we have a super star in the making. I thought we should wait a few months to weigh in on that. But I am wrong. She dazzles.

Agreed. Her passing is sometimes hurried, or to covered teammates.

Weren't Diana and Maya the 6th man in their freshman seasons? That's some tough competition for that title.
Diana was the 6th man until Svet went down 19 games into the season, after which DT moved into the starting line-up.

Maya the Magnificent only came off the bench her first eight games freshman year, then was brought into the starting line-up for good.

Maya became starter when Kalana Greene tore her ACL and LCL in game 8. When asked if Maya would ever go back to the 6th man role, Geno responded: "No, the Rubicon has been crossed."

Even if Blanca doesn't improve, which is absurd, she's already good enough to start at the 3 or 4. I suspect Ash and Serah will improve their scoring contributions, so it probably won't be necessary to start Blanca over them. I'm currently of the view that Geno is likely to continue using early Blanca like early John Havlicek, fireballing first off the bench to sub for whoever is fizzling the most.

Sarah, Serah, and Blanca give UConn a defensive backline that is big physical, and talented on both ends. Why do you think Kayleigh is the defensive adjustment and not Blanca? All Blanca needs to do is get use to her teammates and when she does she will be the 3rd best player on this team. Have you seen how big and strong she is? She learned basketball the European way, not the American high school way. How many teams have a wing player that size? Going against 18-22 year old will seem kind of easy after spending the last few years going against WNBA type players many in their mid 20's to mid 30's.

What is "NISE"? It does not appear in our Chat Room Lesson on Abbreviations. SUGGESTION: Either don't use abbreviations that aren't in that Lesson, or amend the Lesson to include their definition. This is a room that should be enjoyed by all, not just an in-the-know few.

Lighten up Sparky..No need to be rude…. NISE stands for Naples Index of Shooting Efficiency. On page 3 of these posts there is a complete explanation with 2,000 views and 30 responses. It is a made up calculation that divides total points scored by shots & free throws taken. Blanca has 23 points on 16 shots plus 2 free throws. So, 23 divided by 18 = 1.27. Just my way of measuring shooting efficiency. Now you know…by the way, if you use Search button on top right corner of this page and type in NISE, the whole post and comments will show up. In addition, in the same top right corner, there is an envelope icon that, if you click on it, allows you to send a private, polite message to other Boneyarders…

I just learned two things -- the definition of NISE (which I should have recalled), and more important, how to use the "search" button. . . . No rudeness was intended. . . . And the name's not Sparky, it's OldSchooler, which should explain why I'm not as fast as some others.

Ahh, in her freshman year, before the injuries, DT came off the bench and she turned out pretty good. Blanca, that is your roadmap.

According to the advanced statistical measure of Bart Torvik, Blanca is playing at a very high level, about the same as Aubrey last year. Using the same metric, all of our players have taken a leap up this year, except for Ashlynn. But the loss of several high performers leaves our talent on net a bit below last year so far. As the season goes forard, I expect these ratings to improve. The first column is the share of minutes played , the second is the composite rating that includes both offensive and defensive performance, though the latter is inadaquately captured.

Glenn, does Torvik calculate these stats for WCBB players, or did you calculate them using his methodology?

I'm not familiar with his work, so thanks for posting this. I'll look at his site.

Torvik does this for men and women and has a lot of stats that the boneyard would like, including shooting percentage for close in 2 pointers--i e. the missed bunnies that people complain about. Uconn is currently ranked 2nd to SC overall. I highly recommend his site.

Sorry for nitpicking because you know I love your effort but Azzi's nine TO is over 4 games. Blanca's 6 is just in two. Geno, of course, was exaggerating but her passing does need to improve. And it will.
The appropriate stat would be turnovers per minutes played, the lower the better.

Azzi 112 minutes/ 9 T.O. = 12.44, one turnover every 12 minutes played.

Blanca 37 minutes/ 6 T.O. = 6.17 or one turnover every 6 minutes.

IOW, if Blanca played as many minutes as Azzi, she would have 18 turnovers.

I’ll add Nykesha Sales to the list of talented 6th men. She was first in for Pam Webber in the first championship season. (I don’t know why Stanford wasn’t better with “their 6 Nykesha Sales”. Haha.

It’s a small very sample size but my initial impression is that Blanca is very talented but she seems focused on herself too much maybe. She needs to be aware of passing up her shot for the better team shot and just what is best for the team in general. And maybe not just looking to pass once in trouble. Once again this is a first impression and it’s only two games in for her.

Weren't Diana and Maya the 6th man in their freshman seasons? That's some tough competition for that title.
The fact that both D and Maya were quickly inserted into starting roles after a few 6th man positions makes clear to me that Geno won't waste Blanca's remarkable talents opening games sitting on the bench for long. Can anyone who saw her against tOSU in only her second college game not understand that she is already heads and shoulders more talented than Shade, as much as we love Ash?

Her second college game but her resume against WNBA players in 4 years of competition in Italy was on full display. A starting 5 of Sarah, Azzi, Serah, KK and Blanca is IMO by far our strongest!

.-.
Until week ago Blanca was just “the kid joining a team full of stars".
She’d have to adapt, she “couldn’t shoot the three,” “hadn’t played at a high level,” “we’ve got Shade, Ducharme, her ceiling is Griffin…”
One good game later and suddenly you’re ready to hang her banner on the walls!
Relax. Let the kid walk her own unique path in peace.
We just can only enjoy the ride!
