Pretty typical results for a season's first game, on the road, with 5 new players and 3 "new" starters. (Serah, KK and Ash) There were many good stats and more than a few areas that need work, lots of work. Here's the good, bad and ugly from a messy, but still impressive win over a decent Louisville team:

Good stats
  • 25 points to open the game & held L'ville to only 9 points. Nice hole that Louisville could not overcome.
  • Two point shots were 31-52 or 60%.
  • Sarah & Azzi with 21 and 20 points respectively.
  • Kayleigh w/ 23 minutes, 14 points and 0 turnovers.
  • Only 8 team turnovers for the game. Matched/offset with 8 steals.
Bad stats
  • Ashlyn Shade w/ tough nite shooting at 2-10. To her credit, she had 7 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal & 0 turnovers.
  • Four starters (Azzi, KK, Ash & Serah) took a combined 0 free throws.
  • L'ville took 17 free throws and made 14. UConn took only 8, made just 5.
  • Sarah and Kayleigh went a combined 0-7 from 3 pt range.
Ugly stats
  • Three point shooting at 4-26 means 85% were missed.
  • Gave up 18 rebounds to Laura Ziegler, including 7 offensive.
  • Outscored 54-59 in the last 31 minutes of the game. (After 25-7 lead)
A win is a win. UConn sits at 1-0 and plays next Sunday at 4:30 pm against Florida State on FS1. Home game for UConn..!
Go Huskies..!!

Another Good/Bad stat: KK started the game with 13 points in the first quarter (I think). She was scoring from all three levels, layups, jump shots and 3 pointers, with two 2 pointers with one toe on the 3 point stripe. Then she stopped scoring.
I think we are going to need consistency from our players, especially the starters.

Haven't looked at the box score. Who would think that could happen in a game? Wow.

Up and down game. Unfortunately, most of it was down, and that prevented the benchwarmers from getting their sweats off.

Lots of good open looks (which a good team won't give us). Azzi and KK made them; Ash and Kayleigh didn't.

A little disappointed in Serah. Hesitation after grabbing an O-board or taking a pass under the basket cost her some buckets. (Could this mean we'll see more of Jana?) But she'll improve.

Sarah going to the basket is like taking candy from a baby.

For Allie to crack this lineup, she's got to be deadly from outside. I thought Ice played well.

A lot to work on. Let's see what a week of practice does before the home opener vs FSU.

The 14-1 start ended up being the final MoV. Louisville will be good this year, as they did not give up and matched UConn's score the rest of the way.

As you said, a win is a win, and Geno said it as well in the postgame interaction with the 3 ESPN personalities, that "when the game is overanalyzed and you don't meet the expected MoV, you walk out feeling like you lost. I am happy with this win!"

For the record, I am happy with this win! How about Serah's six offensive rebounds and KK & K9's combined 27 points, 9 rebounds 6 assists, and 4 steals in 52 mins of work?!? Those are my fun stats of the night.

Go Huskies!!!

Serah and Sarah had over half of the teams assists. This excites me as our bigs are totally in to the ball movement flow. Loved it when Serah got double teamed down low and sent a pass out to the perimeter. She appears to have bought in to UCONN style.
