UConn stats….. Is Allie now the best shooter on the team..?

HS stats are really difficult to find, but Kelis in HS was defined as a 3 level scorer: at the basket, pull-ups and 3s. We have seen a very limited sample size from Kelis to date, 6.1 minutes/game for the 22 games she has gotten off the bench for. She has taken 57 shots that includes an 0-10 stat line from three. So she has a 51% 2-point shooting average, mostly on driving, contested lay-ups with I think a couple of 6 foot jumpers. She needs a three pointer to drop, and I would love to see her 'pull-up' shot executed instead of the 'I'll take on all three of you bigs, just to prove I can' charges into the lane. This is not that abnormal a situation for a freshman at Uconn - Allie as a fershman comes to mind with her 8 minutes per game and .395/.394/.500 shooting stats - Kelis is at .421/.000/.778.

On Allie - she is currently filling the KML/Lou style role of under-grade spot-up three point specialist. To be more than that, next year she will need to up the defense, while adding more variety to her offensive game - something I believe she is capable of doing.

So far, UConn has been blowing out the competitors. It was only the Michigan game that was close. That said, come the march through the tournament, it is more likely that there will be a close game (or more than one). It is during those close games, that a good free throw shooting team often prevails with ease, as they can run away with it in the last two minutes without even running; a team will get up by five or six, and to stop the clock the opposition will purposefully commit fouls. Does that seal the deal for the team that is fouled putting them to the line or does that strategy actually pay dividends?

UConn currently is the 59th best free throw shooting team. In honesty, that is only because of the way Azzi and Sarah shoot free throws. The rest of the team is rather middle of the road to mediocre. I am surprised that given the quality of shooters that are on the team, that they do not convert at a higher percentage from the free throw line. I'm not speaking of Jana and Williams, those Bigs certainly don't shoot the free throw well, but too an extent I give them a pass. But frankly our guards are just kind of middle of the road as well.

Arnold: 27 of 41 = 65.9%
Shade: 7 of 12 = 58.3%
Heckel: 16 of 26 = 61.5%
Quiñonez: 15 of 20 = 75%
Ziebell: 15 of 20 = 75%

If anything, that might be the only Achillies Heel of this otherwise overwhelmingly good team!

Heckel and Shade are at a surprisingly low percentage. Allie, after starting out very poorly, seems to have turned it around and has been much more accurate recently. I agree this is an important part of the game and one that could bite us in the rear in a close game. First, we hope for no close games, then that Azzi is the one shooting the free throws, then if push comes to shove, that our players rise to the occasion. I believe they will, but I’d rather they didn’t have to!

Spoiler alert…. On paper it looks that way, but probably doesn’t matter exactly who is the “best.” Azzi, Sarah and Blanca are also putting up fabulous shooting numbers, and have been all season. Allie’s caught fire in the last five games, scoring 75 points. That is 15 per game and double figures in 4 of the last 5 games.
Consider;
1. Allie has taken 92 three point shots vs only 33 from inside the arc (74%).
2. Allie shoots 47% from 3 pt. range and an incredible 75.7% from 2 pt range..!! That is 76% inside the arc..!
3. Allie’s numbers went nuts in the Xavier game making 10 threes and scoring 34 total points.
4. Azzi has many more shots (333 versus Allie’s 125), but location is more balanced with 163 threes and 170 from inside the arc.
5. Azzi shoots 45% from three range and 53% on non-threes. Overall she is at 49%.
6. Sarah shoots 39.4% from beyond the arc (37-94) and an amazing 69% from 2 point range (150-217). More than twice as many from inside three range.
7. Blanca has slightly better 3 pt range at 40.4% than Sarah, but “only” 65.3% inside the arc (66 for 101.) Still fabulous..!

So Allie has the best numbers from inside or outside the arc. But Azzi, Sarah and Blanca are close with amazing accuracy. Who cares who is the best, just all get healthy and get ready for the Tournaments..!
Thoughts?
Go Huskies…!!
The real question is whether Allie can defend at an acceptable level? Her offense is really good. She obviously can shoot from the outside but he shots around the bucket are also very very good. Her movement without the ball is exceptional and even her ball handling is surprisingly good. She isn't a flashy player but she is very solid all around on the offense. I could see her really stepping next year and replacing the hole left by Azzi.

Azzi went 4-4 in crunch time against Michigan. My money is on her.

Three point contest, I would still lean Azzi. But lets remember, the opposing team puts best defender on Azzi, not Allie. Geno has mentioned this dynamic a lot of times when the superstars graduate.

What a deliciously well timed arrival for Allie is it not. She doesn't have to be the best, just among the best to inflict pain and suffering on the enemy. I can just hear Dawn now: "Where did she come from!"

Allie fills the role of soot up 3 point shooter and can fill the rim when she is open. She relies on the great vision of KK, Azzi, Heckel and Shade to deliver pinpoint passes to her for wide open shots. An important role to be sure, but Azzi has a quick release and can make her own shots.

Good stuff David. Thanks for sharing! I'm thrilled that Allie, Azzi, and Blanca are overall shooting such a high %. I think someone said we are tops in the nation in 3 point %? If not tops, then near the top for sure...
  1. 46.7% - Allie
  2. 44.8% - Azzi
  3. 40.4% - Blanca
  4. 39.4% - Sarah
  5. 36.7% - Ash
  6. 34.5% - Kayleigh
  7. 34.1% - KK
  8. 13.3% - Caroline
  9. 0.00% - Kelis (she's 0-10)
The first half of last season, KK was really bad - like in the teens. She was much better the 2nd half and that's carried over to this season. Not a SINGLE core player shoots worse than 1 out of 3 in their attempts. Amazing!!
I thought Ash would be a little higher. OTOH, I'm pleased that both K9 and KK are as high as they are.

Sara is shooting .402 % for 3's now ..So that means they have 2 starters an 2 off the bench shooting over 40 % for3's
But UCLA has 3 starters shooting over 40 % with Kneepkins leading with 45.9% basically the same as Azzi at 45.5 %
