UConn stats….. Is Allie now the best shooter on the team..?

HS stats are really difficult to find, but Kelis in HS was defined as a 3 level scorer: at the basket, pull-ups and 3s. We have seen a very limited sample size from Kelis to date, 6.1 minutes/game for the 22 games she has gotten off the bench for. She has taken 57 shots that includes an 0-10 stat line from three. So she has a 51% 2-point shooting average, mostly on driving, contested lay-ups with I think a couple of 6 foot jumpers. She needs a three pointer to drop, and I would love to see her 'pull-up' shot executed instead of the 'I'll take on all three of you bigs, just to prove I can' charges into the lane. This is not that abnormal a situation for a freshman at Uconn - Allie as a fershman comes to mind with her 8 minutes per game and .395/.394/.500 shooting stats - Kelis is at .421/.000/.778.

On Allie - she is currently filling the KML/Lou style role of under-grade spot-up three point specialist. To be more than that, next year she will need to up the defense, while adding more variety to her offensive game - something I believe she is capable of doing.

So far, UConn has been blowing out the competitors. It was only the Michigan game that was close. That said, come the march through the tournament, it is more likely that there will be a close game (or more than one). It is during those close games, that a good free throw shooting team often prevails with ease, as they can run away with it in the last two minutes without even running; a team will get up by five or six, and to stop the clock the opposition will purposefully commit fouls. Does that seal the deal for the team that is fouled putting them to the line or does that strategy actually pay dividends?

UConn currently is the 59th best free throw shooting team. In honesty, that is only because of the way Azzi and Sarah shoot free throws. The rest of the team is rather middle of the road to mediocre. I am surprised that given the quality of shooters that are on the team, that they do not convert at a higher percentage from the free throw line. I'm not speaking of Jana and Williams, those Bigs certainly don't shoot the free throw well, but too an extent I give them a pass. But frankly our guards are just kind of middle of the road as well.

Arnold: 27 of 41 = 65.9%
Shade: 7 of 12 = 58.3%
Heckel: 16 of 26 = 61.5%
Quiñonez: 15 of 20 = 75%
Ziebell: 15 of 20 = 75%

If anything, that might be the only Achillies Heel of this otherwise overwhelmingly good team!

Heckel and Shade are at a surprisingly low percentage. Allie, after starting out very poorly, seems to have turned it around and has been much more accurate recently. I agree this is an important part of the game and one that could bite us in the rear in a close game. First, we hope for no close games, then that Azzi is the one shooting the free throws, then if push comes to shove, that our players rise to the occasion. I believe they will, but I’d rather they didn’t have to!
