UConn St John's rivalry

I don't get why more people on the board aren't embracing what we have now with UConn and St. John's. People have complained about the Big East here for years and how we need the other programs that matter in the Big East to be good (Nova, Georgetown, St. John's.) Now St. John's is really good, nationally people are talking about it being a rivalry and those games will have more juice than any other matchups in college basketball next season and there's a lot of posters turning their nose up at it.
Because we hate Pitino and think St. John's fans are a bunch of bandwagon jumpers. Not so confusing.

As long as we are on this could someone do a defensive matchup comparison between the 2 teams? I don’t know all their transfers well.
Are they going to be as good defensively?

All the more reason to get excited about beating them
Of course I hope we beat them. I hope we beat DePaul, too. I want UConn to be good and care nothing about any other team

All this talk about the spectacle or the entertainment -- whatever. We killed everyone in 2024, had no rival, and it was great.

So all our Big East regular season and Big East tourney titles are worthless? Got it. You agreed St Johns had a better entire year and you agreed with me they crapped the bed in the tourney which I clearly stated both of those in my original post. Double check. Maybe you should go back and read again. Have a nice day!
Personally, I don’t care about regular season titles. That’s the stuff the Providence level programs brag about.

I said they had a better year. Not by a ton. And you just want to argue so you’re harping on something meaningless and boring without anything statistical or factual to support your position (whatever that is).

Go yell at the clouds.

I'd rather have the Big East burn to the ground than to have St. Johns win it. Happy to see any other program step up.

Fortunately, the style of play that allowed St. Johns to win the league and BET won't take them anywhere in the tournament. It's ugly basketball.

You are the one who originally responded to me arguing over nothing. Holy gaslighting batman. It's the second time in a week with you starting one of these back and forths with me. You seem to think that you can be rude to someone and that won't elicit a similar response.

IDK

6-1 is better than 6-0

And do we really want to be rivals with a team that has 1 tournament win in 25 years? That's embarrassing

Because we hate Pitino and think St. John's fans are a bunch of bandwagon jumpers. Not so confusing.
It really is that simple. If this were Seton Hall or Butler I would be more supportive. Heck even Providence I'd be okay with. Johnnies fans are truly the worst.

Depending on Hopkins' recovery, his matchup with Karaban could certainly be even or in Hopkins' favor. I remember Hopkins destroying Alex back in the day. Yes, I realize Karaban has greatly improved.

Reibe and Prey could be even. Hoping Reibe is ready, but he's still a fresh. Prey showed potential this year, and he'll have an off season of Pitino drills...
My thoughts exactly. That one may be best labeled “TBD” - I know a lot has happened since Alex was a freshman, but I went to the game at PC that year and Bryce went ahead and ate Alex’s lunch all game. That being said, Alex’s defense has improved so much since then it’s almost unbelievable to think he could have been taken to work like that in a UConn jersey. Also, in the meantime, Bryce has been going to doctors’ appointments for two straight years.

Easily solved. You’re ignored.

I also think that it means we have to share more NewYork fans. Storrs South really started after St Johns started to stink. They have had a few good teams since we won our first chip but mostly they have not been very good.

Yes we need rivalries personally I just did not want it to be St Johns and Pitino.

And winning the Big East regular season by 3 games and destroying everyone in the Big East tournament.
St. John's was an overachieving 4-5 seed that cosplayed being a 2-seed because (a) they have an exceptional coach, and (b) the Big East was pretty bad last year and the only competitor (UConn) had key injuries (to PG and SF) and had no back-up ball handlers due to a transfer miss. It's a little like Louisville last year, except the committee did not reward the ACC.

A fully healthy UConn team was still the best team in the conference last year, as you can tell by the fact that they nearly beat the National Champion whereas St. John's got boatraced by a team from that same conference that finished 8-10 in that conference. (They also lost to another team from that conference that went 8-10 in the regular season).

They ultimately had a better year than UConn this year, but they were overrated. They're going to have a similar problem next year unless Pitino upgrades their offense. He's a great coach, but fantastic defenses has really been his calling card for a while now, and I'm going to have to see it play out to believe it. They're going to have a good regular season record for sure, but, I'm skeptical of this team more so than UConn.

Idk - fans can go into hibernation and not be judged if their team stinks for 25 years. What’s the point in being engaged in dysfunction and losing for 2.5 decades. Most normal people have better things to do.

I’m sure if we didn’t win multiple titles and went into the Kevin Ollie dark years this place would barely exist.

The reason to hate StJ stems from juicier than bandwagon fans. It’s a coach with a big ego and crooked history who now has a billionaire buying him teams. This is Lex Luther sh8t.

lol, St John’s has as many tournament wins as we do national championships in the last 30+years. They have not advanced past the 2nd round since like 1990 and have made like 5 tournaments this century.
Did they have a better season last year… ultimately, yes. However, to call them a rivalry is far fetched at best. I guess everyone wants a piece of UCONN!

St. John's had a marginally better year than us: results ended in both 2nd round exits, so if they hang their hat on Big East championships, great, hang those banners. But success is results in every walk in life, so until they have 6 Nattys we got 'em by the short hairs.

Did Johnnie’s get the spot in the Champions Classic thing against Kentucky next year instead of us? That’s what I heard Jerry Recco and Al Dukes say on their show today. Disgusting and disappointing if true.
