UConn @ SE Louisiana Univ (Fri. 2/23@7:15p ET, Sat. 2/24 DblHdr - 1st@3p ET, 2nd - 45 min aftr end)

Quick 1-2-3 5th inning for UConn. Freshman Colby Dunlop in to pitch the top of the 6th.

Dunlop walks the first 2 batters, and they come in to score. 4-1 SLU going to the top of the 7th.

Things are not looking good. Huskies go down quickly in the top of the 7th. Trevor Holmes to pitch the bottom of the 7th.

A walk and a hit by pitch chase the starting pitcher for SLU in the top of the 8th.

A Susi single brings Toppa in to score making it 4-2 going to the bottom of the 8th.. Huskies leave 2 runners on in the inning.

Bottom of the 8th, SLU gets 2 runs off of Holmes. Joe Rivera in from the bullpen trying to get the final out of the inning.

Seems like we will have to rely on Poulin and Dandeneau a lot if we want consistent 'pen performance this year.

>>NOTES:
  • Tonight’s five hits was a season-low for the Huskies and first time this season the team did not reach the double-digit hit mark.
  • Kenny Bergmann, Trevor Holmes and Joe Riveraall made their 2018 debuts.
  • The Huskies 5-9 hitters went a combined 0-19 at the plate.
  • The Lions lead the nation in stolen bases and swiped six bags on Friday.<<

Need better from Cate. I'm sure he'll be fine as the season goes on, but he hasn't quite looked like a first-round draft pick yet. Very, very excited to hear how Feole does tomorrow. Is it wild I may like him even more than Tim? If you haven't seen his mechanics, they're exhilarating to watch, with his high leg kick and strong delivery and whatnot. Would love to see us sweep the twinbill tomorrow.

Patience, it's little early in the season for such declarations. Bullpen performance will look a lot better once Tim Cate starts to consistently give us 7 strong innings. Also, much has been said in the fall about the rise of Jake Wallace and his being a candidate to close out games. He hasn't even had a chance to pitch yet this season. With a doubleheader today, I expect he will see mound time today.

I don't think anyone was expecting Trevor Holmes to be one of the mainstays of the bullpen this season. He got a chance in a game where UConn was down several runs late in a game. I tend to doubt he will be a guy to go to when things are really tight late in an important conference game.
