I am really REALLY enjoying our defense right now. SDSU is very much following up the brutal matador defense that FAU, Hawaii, and Ohio State also employed against us. Of course, it’s easier to force errors when you put the ball in play…which we are starting to do.

I would say the defensive play of UConn in the field has been one of the big strengths of this team so far this season. They really don't end up throwing the ball all over the place.

A little disappointed we couldn’t get a 9th run across, but sufficient damage has been done. Throw strikes and play good defense from here on out.

8-2 going to the 7th

Thinking the bottom of the 7th will be Cooke's last inning on the mound.

Cooke gets 2 outs, and allows 2 runners to reach. Bullpen time - get out of here unscathed and SDSU would be nearly dead.

Based on Cooke's performance tonight, I expect he will get the Friday night start against Rutgers next weekend. However, we'll see how the rest of the UConn starting pitchers do this weekend.

Top 8th, with 2 outs, the UConn offense gets 2 walks. Studley drives in 2 runs with a single (advanced to 2B on the throw), 10-2 UConn.

There have been a bunch of 2022 esque 2 out rallies the past few weekends. Love to see it.

2 outs, 1 on for SDSU in the bottom of the 8th.

Kirby gets a strikeout to end the inning. I like the pitch to contact strategy we have used against a mostly toothless SDSU lineup. We're going to win some games this weekend if we cut down on the walks.

UConn defensive moves. Niko Brini comes into the game to play the outfield, moving Smith to 2B, Daniels comes out of the game.

Bottom 8th, after a 1 out double, Kirby strands the runner. 10-2 UConn.

With the big lead, hoping Kirby comes out of the game, and someone else pitches the 9th. Like to be able to use Kirby later in the series in another game or 2. I'd like to see someone like Abbadessa come in and pitch the 9th.

Top 9th, UConn offense goes down in order. 10-2 UConn.

Bottom 9th, Jude Abbadessa coming in to pitch.

Offense goes 1-2-3 in the 9th. Offense was great for 7 innings tonight but started and ended poorly. Something for Penders to nitpick I guess. :)

Throw strikes and get out of here with a series opening win. 10-2 UConn.

Jude in, and his fastball is sitting 91-93 as he gets a strikeout after giving up a tough luck single to start. Keep the strikes coming.

Things are shaping up nicely. Gone are the days of working their way into form on these trips. Depth is solid, competition for IPs and ABs will keep them hungry. D is solid with a possible exception of stopping the running game.

Nice to see Cooke look like the guy there was every reason to expect this year == if not an AP level no.1, at least a real, competent no.1. There was no way the starting pitching this year was going to match last year’s, but it needs to be competent, at least through 2 spots. But Cooke and Sully are now both coming off quality starts, so hope springs eternal. The good news, as I keep saying, is that all our problems today (giving up too many walks, too many LOB, too many hitters not hitting to what they did last year) haven’t stopped us from winning, so if we get some of them fixed ….
