Ouch. More runs in earlier innings would have helped but the pitchers before Willis all did their jobs. Win the next two.

The offense had been doing well the last several games, but not tonight. As Coach Penders says, got to have separation earlier in the game. Praise for the pitchers who were used before Justin Willis tonight, those guys did their job.

Yeah, a lot of undeserved sharing of the blame. Sears and Afthim were great and the offense did enough. Our closer didn’t come through. Case closed. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again. I’m not sure Willis blew a save all last year.

Just got back from Gampel and the opening round of the NCAA women's basketball tournament. Now an evening of UConn baseball is on tap.

Good to see Broadhurst in the cleanup spot in the lineup tonight.
 
Are we at least close to leading the country in DPs grounded into?
 
Time for Quiggers to stake his name as the best starter on this staff. He arguably has the best stuff.
 
Top 2nd, a leadoff single for Studley, but he is picked off for the 1st out, the next 2 batters strikeout. 1-0 UConn.

The baserunning used to be an issue on Penders coached teams. The past few years have seen a tremendous improvement in that regard, but Studley's mental mistake there hurt.

Still too many strikeouts and double plays for this offense.
 
Bottom 2nd, S. Quigley retires the side in order, including a strikeout for the final out, his 2nd strikeout of the night. 1-0 UConn. Quigley is at 37 pitches on the night so far.
 
Quigley with a 1-2-3 inning, inducing two weak popups and a strikeout. Our starting pitching has been awesome this series so far.
 
Top 3rd, Freeberger with a 2 out single drives in a run. 2-0 UConn. Freeberger advanced to 2B on the throw to the plate. Huber with a single drives in another run, 3-0 UConn. After a Broadhurst walk, Studley with an RBI single, 4-0 UConn. They try to pick off the runner at 1B, but a run scores on a throwing error by the pitcher. 5-0 UConn. A pickoff play ends the inning.

A pick off attempt got Padilla in a rundown between 1B and 2B. During the rundown, Studley tried to score, but was caught in his own rundown and eventually tagged out.
 
2 out rallies are still a thing with this team. Get going before the 2 out mark and we will be golden!

With no video available for the game, I suggest you listen to Chris Jones doing the play by play of the game on MIXLR, an audio streaming service. I love listening to him do these games.

Smith continues to struggle. Maybe leadoff Freeberger or Daniels until Smith gets out of his slump?

Freeberger gets a swinging bunt base hit, and Huber hits a double to set us up with 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. It would be nice to throw the dagger in here.
 
Top 5th, a 1 out Freeberger single and a 1 out Huber double puts them both in scoring position. Broadhurst ground ball brings in a run, Broadhurst reaches on a fielders choice grounder as they tried to get the runner at the plate but missed. 6-0 UConn, runners at the corners. Pitching change.
 
Top 5th, the catcher picks off Morton at 1B for the final out. 8-0 UConn.

With UConn scoring all these runs tonight, maybe if they keep on scoring they can get some lesser used pitchers some mound time tonight.
