In theory, there are no active players NBA players right now.

Tough question, I deliberately passed on Martin and Walker because they haven't played and game won't play next season, respectively. If this is being treated like baseball spring training rosters, you should include Lamb. He has more claim of an NBA player right now than Martin is.

My thinking was if you were on a roster on the last day of last season you are active until the opening of next season and vice versa. You aren't active until the season roster is finalized.

The question was “scholarship” player. If Ed had a scholarship, even if he was a redshirt, he should still count. No one said Purvis, but he was a redshirt transfer on scholarship for the 2014 run, and assume he would have counted too.
He had a scholarship. He was not a "scholarship player".

My interpretation is that you must have:
1) played
2) had a scholarship

Ed Nelson (and Purvis) pass #2, but fail #1. Just my take.

Tate is by far, by far, the most famous buzzerbeater in our program's history, and there isn't even a close second. How 90% of this board picked something else is just unfathomable. I will defend that pick to the grave.
Yeah…forget the turnaround jumpshot to win it. How about Scott’s 92 foot baseball pass from the opposite end of the floor with a fully stretched out and leaping 6’11” future NBA player in his grill to get it to that point? That’s why it’s by far my favorite.

Kemba’s ankle breaker is second.

I am also in the Count Lamb camp. If the best player in the NBA was between contracts, would he also be considered to not be an active NBA player? The only way I could maybe accept Lamb not being a valid answer would be if there is a consensus that he will not be playing in the NBA again.

And again context is huge.

Tate misses and UConn season is done. Kemba misses and UConn still moves on to NCAA tourney.

Sheep aside, this really brings into sharp relief how much our NBA pedigree has diminished in the last 10 years. We have 3 guys who are on their last legs in the league, a 2nd round pick on a 2-year rookie contract, a 2nd-year lottery pick who many already consider a bust, and a veteran who may or may not get signed.

Yes, we were spoiled in the early 2010's when we had everyone from Ray Allen through Drummond leaving a mark, but we really need to get back to that level.

Forget that. Kemba misses and we still move on to overtime in that game.

There's no argument Tate was a more important shot in the game, but Kemba step back is an iconic March moment particularly bolstered by both runs that followed.

Tate George is a memorable buzzer beater, but Kembas shot will go up there right alongside Laettnears vs Kentucky.

Was Laettnears shot against UConn to go to the final 4 so much less important than the turnaround vs Kentucky? Not really.

So moments just have "it".

Tate's shot is shown during the second weekend of NCAA Tourney time. Kemba's shot is shown during conference tournament week. Big difference. Tate>Kemba.

I would put Jalen Adams’ 70 footer against Cinci up there too. Even though it wasn’t a “game winner” per se, we ended up winning the game because that shot kept us alive for another OT. The degree of difficulty also has to factor in.

Disagree, b/c of what happened next. After Tate's shot UConn lost the next game, Kemba's shot was part of the juice propelling UConn to a national championship - when John Q. Public watches that Kemba highlight the feeling is that's a damn rocket engine igniting the run to come.

It's the Kemba shot 100% for most fans. Kemba is an iconic NCAA player in the 21st century, who was a national story that whole season, who then had a very good NBA career after, and after the shot he led the team to the title. It also happened in MSG.

Tate George's shot is much harder, the stakes were more, but he wasn't the star of the team and the team lost the next game. Most non-UConn, non-Clemson fans don't remember him.

That was an incredible shot also in a big spot. Agreed. I’m trying to put most memories of the AAC in a lockbox to forget about, but that was a great moment!

Actually, it's not theory. It's fact.

This makes it a trick question, an imperfectly worded question, or subject to the judge's interpretation.

I remain grateful that I was awarded -2 points for answering Ray Allen in question about someone who played in the Kevin Ollie era. I'd love to find a way to have KO's coaching tenure not considered an "era."

I also wish that a buzzer beater was defined as a shot that had to go in or the game was lost.

The tighter the call on the active player question, the better my Drummond answer looks. And I did rule out Martin and Lamb on ambiguity, while thinking Andre was a better answer than Kemba.

Kemba's shot is associated with a championship. Tate's is not. Kemba's is often seen as a catalyst for that whole run even though it was in the 3rd of 5 BET games. And Tate's shot is over shadowed by a similar play 2 years later to win a championship.

But in a bigger picture I agree with Chin. The Dream Season was still a huge deal and while the loss was in the Elite 8 to Duke, we played Duke and the beginning of the programs dramatic rise was because of that year, and partially The Shot.

They're both huge, but for the program and JC to continue on its upward trend that pass by Scott and the shot by Tate are the biggest to me as a fan.

Damn. The "Pick the obvious answer" strategy to Reverse Sheep has killed me these last two. Well, that and forgetting to type Kemba into the other question. Whoops

Scoring Notes
  • Despite being UConn's all-time scoring leading, Chris Smith just misses the cut, as his final year was 31 seasons ago.
  • Albert Mouring had the lowest PPG mark (15.1 PPG in 2000-01) of any qualifying player and was still the most common answer.
  • Jeff Adrien was the closest incorrect response, as he tallied 14.8 PPG in his junior season.
  • Here's a full list of the 32 qualifying season.
