UConn Recruiting

Morgan Cheli is a PG. She’ll probably play 1-3 at UConn, but she can for sure run an offense (see highlights from her Championship game, she made some Paige-like passes).
I assume that you are correct! I thought of Morgan as a SG or wind? If she can be a COMBO guard ( 1- 3 )
all the better! She had a very fine game at the NIKE CHAMPIONSHIPS. CONGRATS TO MORGAN, MITTY,
and McKenna!

At point guard? I don't think so. Even though Paige is playing 1-4 at various parts of the season, next year her position is likely to be PG with KK. If Paige leaves along with Nika, KK would be the only proven PG, hence a possible interest in Chen.

Allie appears to be a SG, and Morgan looks very versatile but probably best at SF IMO.
I AGREE!

I think Ashlyn could be a very good point guard, when she has the ball and she’s not shooting, she distributes it very well.
YES, and she is not TURNOVER prone. I just think of her as a SG. Catch and shoot, and drive for intermediate
jumpers. At 5 ' 10" her " pro potential " may be PG??.. but IMO she is not in the Mold of KK and those ULRA FAST,
PGs you see.

The nice thing about that versatility is it means she could be used to substitute for any of our perimeter players, and perhaps even at the 4 on occasions in another small ball lineup. In many ways her use could be similar to Evina, who was used 1-4 while she was here. Also like Evina, I don't think PG is Morgan's best position, at least at a high division 1 level, but it is nice to know she could be say a good third option there, behind probably Paige and KK, but ahead of Ines, with of course the possibility of being the principle backup if Paige doesn't come back or there is an injury to either Paige or KK.

Regardless talented and versatile multi-position players usually find a role somewhere, and are even more valuable when injuries hit multiple positions. I think passers also have an easier transition to top college programs. Most high recruits dominate their team's scoring and then have to adjust to being just one of the pieces in the offense, not the featured attraction. Morgan is already known for her passing and unselfishness so I think she comes in further down the learning curve than many.

Agree that Ash could be a PG but better likelihood of a championship if everyone played the position they are best suited for.

I think Cheli may be very effective playing a Caroline Ducharme-like role in the offense with the added ability to also play both guard positions...

Morgan will be an excellent wing or shooting guard. Not nearly quick enough to play point guard as was clearly evident in the Nike championship game.

I understand that this has a very low probability to happen, but instead of Geno signing a one-year eligible transfer, what about one of the better frosh or soph bigs coming in as Dorka did. I watch a lot of women's college basketball and without getting into names, there are several strong players performing well for relatively little-known schools particularly in the Midwest. Even if you aren't thinking of going pro, the ability to graduate as part of the UConn/Geno brand, networking with the best and brightest in basketball, and potential NIL money would be worth the risk to many. Takes a special person to transfer to UConn but suspect they are out there.

Like her?

Seh can't play for Nebraska yet she can play for UCONN?

I highly doubt it.
This is what the portal mainly looks like. What’s more, if we accept Mendelson she’ll be in the scholarship list for three years. Geno seems mainly to prefer seniors and grad students.

Dorka was a very unusual find. A grad transfer who made the rotation right away and became almost indispensable in her second season. I don’t see any potential transfers like her on the horizon.

It's a little early for that, isn't it? We don't know who else will enter the portal.

I do not recall Geno having a two sport player on the basketball team. I’ve always been under the impression that if you wanted to play for Geno you couldn’t be a two way player. Mendelson’s primary sport appears to be volleyball and there would be plenty of contenders who would want her as a volleyball player.

A number of people have posted that Geno needs to get a big body and coach her up. At least Maggie has experience at a Div I level. But of course you’re right, Geno can’t be recruiting girls just because they’re tall then expect them to transform into Dorka. It doesn’t work that way. There are tall girls in the portal but it needs to be a fit for both player and team for a transfer to be happy in her new home.

My feeling is that Maggie Mendelson will probably be playing volleyball at a new school rather than basketball

She has 2 years of volleyball eligibility left and 3 for basketball. Is that just a timing overlap or did she sit out a basketball season because of an injury?

Another variable to add to the equation of adding portal players is, who, on the current roster, will be taking an extra year ?
There might not be much room, on the roster, to add transfer players.

Jill Gelfenbien (courtesy of jewish sports.org):

Gelfenbein played for the University of Connecticut Huskies and was a member of the Huskies' 1995 National Championship basketball team. She was also an all-New England and all-NCAA Tournament goalkeeper for the University of Connecticut's soccer team.

Gelfenbein walked on to the basketball team prior to the 1994-95 season. She appeared briefly in the National Championship game, making her one of the few athletes in history to appear in two Final Fours in one scholastic year: Jill was co-captain of the 1994 UConn women's soccer team that reached the National semifinals.

Interesting. Not sure where you find all your basketball info but much appreciated. Probably not the answer for UConn basketball but fun to discuss.

I read the Transfer notice that was posted by Husky Nan earlier today. I thought the article, out of
Nebraska, reported (or implied) that she would be considering Basketball as a first option. Did I
misread? The dominoes will start to fall when Sarah Strong makes her decision. Perhaps the
first domino is Aaliyah entering the WNBA draft come springtime.

No one on the roster will say anything about entering the draft until they have to. They may want to keep their options open, but mostly (I suspect) they won't want to disturb the team's focus needlessly.

Don’t get too excited. I mean no offense to Maggie whatsoever when I post these stats.

Maggie got an average 7 minutes against these teams. I’m not sure she’s prepared to play UConn’s schedule

She hasn't played any for the basketball team this year since she just recently came out of volleyball. So, that's the extra year of basketball eligibility.

Maggie Mendelson's high school recruiting page indicates that she was a 4 star BB recruit that rated a 95. Her position rank was #6 & her overall rank was #22. Her scouting report is very complimentary about her BB skills.

If Geno were interested in a big he'd probably ask her to visit & to try out by doing a workout.
She could have more potential then her freshman stats indicate.
Bett's freshman stats weren't all that impressive either & look how she's doing now.

2022-2023 Nebraska individual stats:

Are you suggesting that Mendelson was mistakenly overlooked in the main rotation by the Nebraska coaches? That’s the general sentiment about Betts, namely that Tara made a huge mistake in not playing her and that she could have had these same sophomore stats last year if she’d merely gotten more minutes. If that’s a fair assessment of Mendelson, then she’ll probably be very sought after this spring.

This game highlight video shows her (wearing #44) making 3 plays in row after the 2:35 mark, 1 basket & then 2 blocks.
It was stated that she only had 10 days of practice before that game.

Nice find of this clip. She gets two excellent blocks and takes a low post pass and converts. She also looks significantly quicker than the other bigs on the team. I don’t know that she has a midrange game or what sort of passer she is.
