I just had a better idea: a (baseball season, folks) thread about the "appeal play."

To refresh your memories, here's how it works:

Man on third, two outs. Batter hits a fly ball to the outfield. Third base umpire has nothing in the world to do except watch to see if the baserunner keeps a foot on the bag until the ball is caught.

Runner breaks for home and scores. Umpires do nothing.

Then the third baseman calls for the ball. Catcher tosses it to him. Third baseman catches the ball and stomps on third base. Umpire dramatically gives the "OUT!" signal. Run doesnt count. Side retired. Defensive team leaves the field and heads for the dugout. Other team's manager and several players stream on to the field to protest. The whole charade takes about 15 minutes.

Somebody explain why the third base umpire is not required to, um, umpire! and make a signal to indicate that the runner tagged up properly or not. Make the call right then, from a vantage point of about 4 feet away, unobstructed view.

I think this is nuts. Some keen mind please explain the logic in the "appeal play."
Because the runner that missed 3rd can always go back and touch the bag as long as the defense doesn't touch 3rd first with the ball. The umpire is just waiting for the runner to return before the defense realizes he missed the bag.

In an American Legion championship game I saw the following occur. Tie game, two outs, bottom of last inning. Men on 1st & 3rd. Batter hits long fly ball between center and right field. Man on 3rd scores. Game over. Players mob batter as he touches 1st base. Center fielder retrieves the ball at the fence and trots in with it. Instead of going to the dugout, he goes to second base. Umpire loudly calls OUT! Side retired.

When the runner on first saw that the ball would roll to the fence, he never touched second base. Instead he turned around and went to congratulate the batter at first. The ump just stood on the field and made the delayed force out call since the play wasn't over yet. It wasn't his obligation to tell the runner to go back and touch 2nd, or to tell the defensive player what the runner didn't do. The crowd was stunned.

No logic to it at all Kib.

How about this one? Why is a catcher allowed to block the plate to prevent a runner from scoring? This is not allowed for any other base. It has caused untold serious and minor injuries over the years. Isn't Baseball supposed to be a non-contact sport?
Blocking any base is allowed as long as the player has the ball in hand. You wouldn't see it at Home either if the catcher wasn't wearing the armor plating.

But catchers routinely block home plate in anticipation of recieving the ball. So runners have to go around them to score.

I neglected to mention that if the catcher is in the process of catching the ball, that's okay too. It does seem that at times the umpire stretches the definition of "in the process of catching the ball", as illegally blocking the plate is rarely called.

Guys, here's another one that is rarely called. Getting hit by a pitch. If a batter gets hit by a pitch but makes no apparent effort to get out of the way of the ball, it's supposed to be called a ball. I've seen several instances of a slow curve that didn't break and hit a batter who just stood there and let it hit him. I've never seen it called a ball. Have you?

If there was even the slightest doubt about Boneyarders having too much time on their hands during the off-season, this thread eliminates it completely.

And six long months to go.
