Just so tired of the cheap shots UConn players have to endure. As was posted, no consequences so teams will continue to play "beat up UConn players". Maybe it's time for UConn to get an enforcer - someone who won't mind being ejected for hammering someone on the other team.

Bottom line we won, by a lot. But Q2 and the start of Q3 was not pretty. Red flags for sure, but nothing can be done now. Needed to be fixed earlier. We can only ride the horses we have. Special shout out to KK for finding her shot!
"Enforcer" is a term I associate with MEN'S ICE HOCKEY. (generally PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY ).. not with UCONN's WBB, IMHO.

I hope AE doesn't have a concussion or she could be out for awhile.

The team's response after she went out was enormous. Paige did Paige things, but there were contributions from KK, Nika, Ash, and Ice. I was so happy to see Ice, playing with 3 fouls, only pick up 1 more when we really needed her to stay in the game.

At the beginning of the second quarter Ice was called for a charging foul when a Providence player fell to the floor. To me, it appeared to be an obvious flop. The Providence player appeared to be nearly flat on her back before Ice touched her. Did anyone else see this play as being a flop?

.-.
I was stunned that the Providence player was not ejected for a clear, intentional swing to Aaliyah's face.
Disgraceful there was no ejection. What a joke the Big East Officials are and what the Big East would be if they don't penalize this more. She wound up and hit a player above the head.

I said flop in real time. She was falling back well before ice touched her.

A couple thoughts on tonight’s game:
  • The last UConn player you would ever expect to see go down with an injury is Aaliyah, who has been nothing short of a warhorse in her 4 years as a Husky. If she has a broken nose, I’m unsure how soon she could possibly be back on the court, even if she breaks out her superhero mask from last season.
  • Nika with another 5 assists is now 1 behind Jenn for 3rd place on UConn’s all-time assist list.
  • With Aaliyah out, I thought that Ice played very solid basketball at both ends of the court.
  • As a reminder to everyone, Paige is just a different player this time of year, and she has been since high school. Like DT, Maya, Stewie and other Huskies before her, Paige is a BIG GAME PLAYER, who will take over a game if that’s what’s necessary to insure victory. Today’s stat line: 29 pts, 9 rbs, 6 assists, 3 stls, 3 blocks.
  • Nice to see KK and Ashlyn rediscover their shooting stroke. KK in particular played a marvelous game, only to go down with less than 2 minutes left in the game with a quad? injury.
  • Geno must feel like Job, whose faith in God was tested with all manner of abuse visited upon him by Satan. Job never cursed God. As for Geno, I can only imagine. :(
I am hoping that Edwards did not suffer a broken nose. But she did have a bit of a distant look when the return from the locker room. KK will know more tomorrow. But we can't get anyone ( ie Marquette or Villanova) if both KK and Edwards are out.

As others have said, the girl was already falling backwards before Ice got there. I posted that in the chat as several others did as well.

she wasn’t ejected because it was not “a clear swing” at Edward’s. The player was going up for a rebound and Edward’s caught an elbow. It happens.
I have to disagree with you. There was nothing inadvertent about the Providence player swinging her left arm wildly, fully extended at face level. There was no intent to box out. That was absolutely a cheap shot. That’s why a 2-shot flagrant foul was called. The refs, at their discretion, can subsequently eject the player if they determine that a flagrant foul was both intentional and severe.

the nail gets hits on the head!

re: liya
i was remjnded of griner vs. walz/louisville. a bit ridiculous.

We will certainly find out some more about Samuels, and particularly Inȇs, if that happens.

Very physical game that the refs let get out of hand. Same girl put three huskies down.

UConn had more offense, which is what we wanted to see. Let’s go UConn!

Ice shout out also. Nice game from her.
I’m not sure any were intentional. She threw her arm out, but had no idea Aaliyah’s face was there. KK hit her thigh on her knee trying to go around. Not sure which #3 is, but I don’t think the other 2 were intentional. She tried to apologize in the handshake line.

And the slo mo clearly showed her sticking her knee out to impede KK. If KK weren’t quite a bit shorter than the PC player, it would have been knee on knee!
and this was done with the game out of reach and the huskies were trying to milk the clock.

but hey, if you're gonna lose, you might as well send a message to those g-d huskies. .... i doubt that all friar players endorse that, btw.

If you think I haven’t watched the P5 conferences you must not have read many posts here. Yes they have rough play too and it sometimes gets out of hand. If Angel Reese got injured and couldn’t continue in the tournament or the NCAAs, would you think the SEC should do something? Oh, wait, Angel was injured yesterday. Or if someone broke Caitlin’s nose in the Big10 tournament?
Your post is pretty accurate
Imho these games, get very physical, because uconn plays almost 100% in the half court
Due to all the injuries, they are not able to press and play up-tempo and make it a 90 ft game
Stuck in the half court The way basketball seems to be referee these days there’s constant contact
Especially off the ball and UConn does it’s fair share
If UConn had its full roster, I don’t think we’d even be talking about this kind of thing
In a game like today in Uconn would have pressed from the opening tap and had the game put away five minutes in
All of that being said, teams with very little talent will generally fall on pretty much every possession, knowing that the referees are not gonna call everything and that’s kind of where the game was today

I concur. Providence payer should have been moved from the court
I tried to look up who I could contact in the Big East to voice my displeasure and ofc be civil about it but wasn’t sure who to contact. Just want an explanation why winding up and slashing a player above the head is not an automatic ejection once you rule it was "intentional."

IMO let's be clear- these are college kids. They are smart. The opposing center knows exactly the height if Edwards. IMO she should never be winding up as high as she did vs a player she knows is smaller in height. The intent was definitely not to hurt but the intent is equivalent to malign a non-basketball play when you swing high (wind up) and connect above the head with someone you well know is behind you. She wound up and swing high and followed through behind her. When a player doe that they have no thought of where there swinging might wind up.

It's one thing to keep your arms to collect a rebound. It also okay if you didn’t know someone was behind you or that player was shorter that you just aren't accustomed to fending against. It's also excusable if the arm hits they should then follow up to the face (in terms of not getting ejected.).

Unless some of you that played in College or the Pros can explain why this scenario doesn't warrant ejection and/or this happens all the time? I wouldn't believe it but willing to listen. When you wind up and extend high where do you think your arm is going to go against the other player that you would know very well their height and that they are behind you?

Just asking for an at-the--moment-ejection. Not suspension for next year or other as long as they ejected. Instead, what do we see form this same PC kid in this game in the 4th qtr? She knocks KK down on illegal pick. And KK is not an easy kid to knock down. Then she thinks she is Scottie Pippen and tires to trap probably the quickest guard in the Big East KK - hits with her knee causing KK to collapse. She had no realistic shot to trap her as a center. I get it she has to try but she and others like her also need to be penalized when things go too far. You can't totally excuse players that just aren’t aware what type of injuries they may cause all in the name of hustle.

AE had put her hand on the girls back miliseconds before the foul. That girl knew eactly where AE's head was from that contact. I remember in the 90's Othella Harrington of Georgetown was a master at this. He did exactly the same thing to Donyell Marshall one time. He knew Marshall was in back of him and he swung that wild blind arm backwards and caught Donyell in the throat. And then he would always act like he had no idea anybody was there. It is something players can do and that it what it must be called. It you're just placing the arm out to fend somebody off that's one thing. But this was a swing.

KK played an exceptional game today on both ends of the court. If she continues to play offense too it will give UConn a definite shot in the arm down the stretch. Paige played well early and late but had a sluggish middle which gave Providence a chance to stick around. Nika had like zero shots in the first half and she needs to look to score at least a little bit.

The shot AE took to the face didn't look like the player was trying to hurt anyone on the play. As I saw it, the elbow got up and make a perfect connection with AE's face and that was some really bad luck. The silver lining though is AE is the one player on UConn that has worn a mask and was able to be really good. She will be back, maybe not tomorrow, but soon.

Ice was not playing a good game until AE went down. It seemed like she got more focused and certainly more determined to be an asset not a liability for UConn today. That is the type of play she is capable of but it was also the first time she really played that position all year so good for her.

Not true at all. She is defending one player, one legit offensive rebounder on UCONN. You can further see on the review when Edwards is sliding to the basket to to get the Offensive Rebound so is the PC Center. They had their hands on each other at the point of the rebound. How can you say "She didn't know where Edwards was?" They both have their hands /arms on each other. :):)

I can remember when basketball was not a contact sport. Half of the non calls would have been a foul when I played in the mid 60's to early 70's.
The referees had plenty of warning well before the injuries (even the FS1 announcers noticed the physicality was getting out of hand when Edwards got knocked down the first time). The inside play looked like a rugby scrum.

There was also one play where Providence got a steal and someone was breaking in for a layup and only Shade was back. She blatantly pushed off with her lead hand and scored, and instead of an (obvious) offensive foul, the refs called Shade for a foul. That was the worst call of the game in my view.

Yes,it sometimes gets out of hand. That's what happens on the athletic fields at times( except for pickle ball). What would you suggest that the powers-that-be do when that happens?
