I am honestly not a fan of this at all. Let the kid get a bit of space and grow up before throwing college offers at 13 years old.

you're not a fan of a family having the piece of mind that their child has a college education already taken care of?

Is that really what you think he dislikes? If offering scholarships to a kid who hasn't gone thru puberty doesn't give you a little pause Id consider you in the minority.

There is a one year old who jumped out of his crib last week in Nebraska, he had three college recruiters offer him a scholarship before he hit the floor.

If the kid is getting offers in 8th grade then he will be getting offers in 10th and 11th. I just think it is too much pressure to put on a 13 year old. I understand that it is good for the family, but i think we lose sight of the fact that we need to let kids be kids.

If we don't offer him, someone else will. That's just how it works these days for better or worse. We can take the moral path and wait, but by then it is too late. You have to play the cards you are dealt and that is just how recruiting works these days.

it doesn't matter what he means. what matters is he's against a young kid getting a scholarship which would change the dynamic of his family in a positive way in the long run.

Yeah, he probably will be getting multiple offers in the next few years, but why wait? Baring any life altering injuries, this kid can just concentrate on being a student athlete until his high school graduation.

Except that's asinine as he doesn't have a "scholarship" since he can't except one for 4 more years. I don't think its unreasonable to think it might be better for the mental health of a 13 year old to wait a few years for a scholarship offer.

what's asinine is your understanding of a scholarship offer. and you're right, you're not thinking at all since you're so quick to determine what is reasonable or not for a 13 year old kid. It's not just about the kid, it's about what this opportunity does for his family.

I'm extraordinarily familiar with a scholarship offer having been an athlete and having multiple family members, friends and athletes I coached received them. His family, after receiving an offer from KO, is absolutely no better off than immediately before. They clearly understand, having had division 1 hoop players in the family (his grandfather was the #2 pick in the NBA draft), that he likely can play at any school in the country. The worry of of free college education is long since an issue.

My issue is that the majority of 8th graders, not to mention sophomores or juniors, arent well equipped to deal with the pressures of the recruiting world. That horse may already be out of the barn but it doesn't change my opinion that it's obscene to be offering 8th graders. Does the practice honestly not give you the willies just a little bit? I'm assuming your an adult as you've been on the board for years but give you some leeway if you're a kid.
