UConn Needs Forwards!

Good! So, there will be no twisted ankles, head colds, foul trouble or players simply having a bad day, right?

I don't know if UConn needs to push it all the way to 15, but having a couple of extra players for insurance purposes isn't bad.
If I remember right we had a couple of games in our injury plagued years where we had the absolute minimum number of players available of 7. If we only had 12 on the roster to start with, we would have had forfeited games per NCAA rules and I think we had at least 14 on the roster at that time.

When Paige got injured and was out for the next season, we were vulnerable behind the now starter Nika, and basically went into desperation last second recruiting mode to get Ines. The high school players had already committed, the portal movement was over, and the only option beyond walk-ons, were foreign players who already had visas that were willing to commit in a few days to coming here, with no time even for a visit. Under those circumstances Ines was a good solution to a one year problem.

My point is if there ever was a fan base that should be well aware of the need for a large roster because of injuries, it is ours. IMO staying at 12 is too dangerous, even if the new addition has close to a zero chance of breaking a healthy rotation and even if that player was clearly the worst of the 13.

Now I would hope to get a player that was rotation possible, even if just very few minutes behind Sarah. Better yet a player good enough to play significant minutes and allow Sarah to play more at the 3. But even if we can't get that, at a minimum I think we need to pursue the best backup 4 we can get, if only for the purpose of being injury insurance. If we wind up pursing just injury insurance vs. a real difference maker if healthy, then a one year rental would not adversely affect our portal or HS recruiting possibilities.

This makes way too much sense. In my opinion, we should never enter a season with less than 14 players. I saw yesterday that Carys Baker is off the board. I would have like to have Vin Baker's daughter, and CT native, on the team.

As for Bigs, we need another one. People are way too optimistic on what we will get from a freshman, Jana is injury prone and limited athletically and Gandy isn't the answer.

I've noticed a common theme in this thread. People describe the front court player that UConn "needs", and from the description, the player for all practical purposes needs to be an All-American. If you can score in double digits on average, be a dominant rebounder, and
defend tall, quick athletic forwards on other teams, then by definition you are an All-American. Easy to find those in the portal, right?

But then, the posters say that this All-American forward will just be "in the rotation", getting backup minutes behind Sarah, Olivia, and the other bigs that we already have. If you're an All-American forward, that sounds really appetizing, doesn't it?

If there is an Azura Stevens in the portal, then of course Geno will take her if he can get her. But even Azura was not a good post defender at the time she came to UConn, even though she had the athletic ability to do that. Coming from Duke's zone defense, she was accustomed to standing in one spot with her arms up, not to moving her feet on defense. It was a battle for the coaches to get her to play serious player-to-player defense in her short time at UConn.

Since then, the transfer bigs that Geno has gotten (I'm thinking of Natalie Butler and Serah) were not at the all-American level, and they were not able to do all the things the posters here are saying that UConn "needs". Would another Natalie or Serah really be of much help next year?

We only had 12, including warm bodies, last season. Morgan and Ice were both out injured and Carol was not a daily participant.

They decided to redshirt Gandy, too, so she would be a warm body.

IOW, when they add filler players to get up to 15, they will have more ambulatory players than this past year as no one is currently expected to miss next season with injury.

If that player was just a 5, maybe not. The bigger need is a true 4, and I agree with your general point that a very high level player to pencil in for backup minutes is a hard sell for any potential recruit. But that is pretty much where we are. We used a 9 player rotation last year without a natural backup 4. We played Blanca a lot at the 4 and guards a lot at the 3.

For a new addition at the 4 to make the big game rotation, they probably need to be good enough to convince Geno to expand that rotation to 10. That is a pretty high bar because 9 worked pretty well with a small ball emphasis. The option to go more traditional or even big, however, would change a great deal with the addition of a rotation worth 4 that could let Sarah play some 3 and maybe Blanca some 2. Hard to find a player good enough to crack a very good rotation that is OK with less than starter minutes. Not for everybody and it might be a long-shot, I get it, but that doesn't change the logic for pursuing it.

If we strike out on that quest, quite possible, if not even probable, then I think we still should pursue someone for injury insurance at that position. Both Ayanna and Ice gone means get someone, even if their intended role is a third stringer type. That we should be able to find once the top picks choose their destinations.

With the loss of Caroline Ducharme to graduation and Ayanna Patterson and Ice Brady to transfers, UConn really needs at least one more forward. Since Laura Somfai signed with TCU in supersonic time, who's the best forward for UConn to offer in the transfer portal?

Strong, Quinonez, Vukosa, Cheli.

A 5th forward would be nice but who sits?

Besides, I want Ayers.

A one-year transfer shouldn't impact that..........are you sure that Olivia is going to play mostly at the four? She certainly could offensively, but I'm not sure if she could defensively.........depends on the quickness of the opposing player she's guarding........I envision her more at the post or as the four in a big lineup along with Jana.....

3-5 are very fuzzy numbers right now at UConn. The only players I associate with just one position are El Alfy and Arnold. All last year, guards came in for centers, forwards came in for guards. Roles shifted throughout the game.

UConn has played a lot without a center on the floor but Strong can post low despite not being a center. So can Quinonez. UConn needs 3pt shooting but that doesn't necessarily mean a shooting guard. Those same two players are very good 3pt shooters. They also drive lanes.

I think using position Nos. is a waste of time with UConn. El Alfy, Vukosa, Strong, Cheli and Quinonez. Four 3/4's and a center. I bet they'd do OK without a 1 or 2. Or Strong, Quinonez, Arnold, Shade and Ziebell. A pf, 2 wings and 2 guards. That could be the day 1 starters.

My hope is that the team will be able to play together a lot this summer. That's all they need.

You guys remember Morgan will be coming back, right?
Yes, hopefully she will be. But we must also remember she hasn't played in a game since February 9th, 2025 (23 minutes). That's 2 months and a full season of "real game" experience lost. We'll know more after several games in the upcoming '26-'27 season. I pray she stays healthy and gains the confidence back she had before her worsening injury ... like the confidence Allie developed in herself this past year! That was so nice see and experience with her.

I watched Azzi, Caroline, Ayanna & Ice suffer repeated injuries. Azzi was finally able to get back to an elite level, but Caroline & Ayanna never seemed able to reach the level of play I thought each was capable of ....

By the way ... I don't think it would hurt one bit to have another 6'1"-6'4", active, great shooting Forward on next year's team ... no matter how she's acquired.

Wishing only good fortune to Azzi, Caroline, Serah, Ayanna & Ice!!

Don't disagree but suggest some "specialists" would be helpful as UConn matches up in the playoffs or against Top 10 in season games. Not sure there will be many true enters we need to match up with this year, but we have Jana as a big body. Our biggest competition will come from teams with quick guards who constantly drive to the basket. Does not have to be a giant but would rather have a shot blocker to compliment Sarah and Blanca and or a great defensive guard to rest KK. Jana is not a shot blocker and K9 is a solid defensive player but not quick enough for the top 10% we will see in the NCAA's.. Notice, unlike 99% of the posts, I did not focus on offense. While great shooters are always welcome, we have a solid offensive team now and unlikely for an All American shooter to want to transfer to UConn-not enough court time.

100% agree with you. I am not even counting Morgan as a reliable contributor on this team next year. As you said, we have seen this before. There is no telling how long it will take her to get back to her normal self, if at all. I hope she does because she seems like a great person.

This thread is wandering all over. Feel free to start new threads.

There is a Transfer Thread on the General board, btw
