UConn - ND post game (merged)

I was curious what shirt Kelis was wearing. And presumably the rest of the team.

I don't know about anyone else, but I felt like UCONN wanted to blow ND out so bad that they just got outside of themselves and played an awful first half. Instead of running their offence, there was a lot of one pass and then launch a 3, which helped ND stay close. It was really frustrating to see especially because from the start of the game ND had no answer when we attacked the paint. You don't have to try to blowout an opponent, the blowout will come if you just keep playing your game. But then came the second half and the team look more like themselves.

All in all, I am happy with the win. But I would have love to see a complete game from start to finish. Good win! Go Huskies!

I don’t know if anyone else noticed but late in the fourth quarter, Ash found herself guarding Gisela Sanchez in the paint. Sanchez gave Ash several sharp jabs with her elbow and due to the height difference, I think it caught Ash in a sensitive spot. FWIW, Ash jabbed back but she was outmatched.

Then Geno subs Ash out for Serah, who had a few words for Sanchez. Serah got a little spicy and I love it. The Huskies have each others’ backs
Serah has a fine game, went quickly to the ball and rebounded with strength. Probably her best game as a Husky with lots of up-side left. She seemed to love playing this "big" game. This stage seems to fit her personality and show what was missing at Wisconsin for her.

Loved the first 4 minutes of the first half....and pretty much the entire second half.
Last 16 of first half was a mess.

Serah is getting better...sure wish we had her for another year. She is showing a bit of an
attitude...love it!

I was hoping to see Jana against Villanova...didn't. I was expecting to see Jana against ND...
didn't. Sure hope she is back for LadyVol on Feb. 1.

Serah and Jana.....from what we are seeing lately...make a very good inside duo.

Tough game for BQ but she will be better for it....
seems like about this time of year Geno benched Stewie, called in the Freshman slump or something like that. BQ was shooting over 50% from 3, lately she has cooled off. Just so she is back on track in March and April.

Everybody eats. The passing was top tier. Sarah continues her NPOY play. Azzi though off from 3, impacts the game in so many ways. She showed leadership today. KK was headstrong defensively and looked to score plenty today.

Shade is returning to form and looks like the Shade we all know. Blanca had a great game, Heckel had a coming out party. Serah Williams was great too and she’s coming along.

All in all - this UConn team showed in the second half, when they want to go on a run, they can. And when they need to shut down a dynamic guard, they have a strategy.

They’re the favorites, best team, with the best two players and best coach. I don’t know how this team is better than last years but they are.
I question Blanca's "great game" with 4-11 shooting and her 5 TOs!

I was a little nervous at halftime and assumed Geno might peel the paint off the walls of the locker room, but it sounds like he was pretty controlled. The second half was outstanding.

Hidalgo got called for one foul when he jumped for a rebound and landed sprawled on someone's back. She had a blatant push off early in the first quarter and tripped Quinonez in the second half, and there were several others the ordinary player might get called for.

This game gives me more confidence for the upcoming Tennessee game, another opponent that always makes me uneasy no matter what.

UConn is tough enough to play anytime. But when Geno and his staff have extra time to really prepare for an opponent, they are damned near unbeatable.

The Huskies last played Thursday at Gampel. They had almost 4 full days to prepare for the Irish. No travel. No classes. Few if any distractions. I’d say that UConn was absolutely prepared to dismantle ND tonight.

Some thoughts on the Notre Dame game:
  • I’m guessing that KK was the toughest defender Hidalgo has faced all season…and Kayleigh & Azzi were pretty damned good too.
I don't know if it was a defender or multiple defenders but Michigan held HH to 12 points on 4 of 21. However, it was early in the season, 4th game or so.

It wasn’t all that pretty in the first half but UConn’s pressure and ND’s lack of depth made the second half bust out predictable.

Putting 50 plus up in the second half made up for indifferent offensive showing in the first half.

Hidalgo got 16 but none of them came easy . A great plan to make her struggle.

It is not nearly as good an idea to zone UConn now as it was in the beginning of the year.

UConn normally backs the pressure off in the fourth quarter with a big lead. Not tonight. Geno might have been sending a message.

Blanca is so talented but man she can frustrating at times. I can imagine how the staff feels.

The announcers are making a big deal about how well KK is playing with the mask. I bet the mask will appear in Hidalgo’s nightmares. KK was relentless guarding her.

Feel bad for Jana and Carol. Hope both are good to go next time.
I hope that KK wears the mask for the rest of the season. Ever since she went to the black mask she's been on a tear, both in the defense and the offense.

Yesterday I was watching the Louisville at NC State game and asked (facetiously) on the BY if my favorite ref, Joe Vaszily, was going to catch a flight from Raleigh to Bradley after that game. He didn't. But his two "partners in crime" did, Maj Forsberg and Karen Preato. 😲

KK Arnold!

Entering this game, KK had moved into 8th place nationally (out of 5,000+ DI players) in the all-around performance stat called Box Plus/Minus, and she may have improved that position with today's performance.

UConn demonstrated two important things, especially for a tournament, in this game. Against a tough defense, they can win dominantly even with mediocre first half play and poor three point shooting all game.
