Without knowing how to play results out on a computer, I did go through it and I think the odds are fairly low that we can get in beating BC and losing in the final. Everything else in the college hockey world would have to break perfectly. And, for that to be our plan, we better lose to UMass in the finals, not Merrimack, and our win over BC better be in regulation and our finals loss in a penalty shootout where for NPI purposes it counts as a tie.

In any event, all that matters now is beating BC. I’m sure by Saturday morning there will be more clarity on whether getting in as an at large is possible.

Barring some statistical anomaly in the new NPI system that no one has seen yet, this is how the cutline would look if we lose to Merrimack in the final:

13. Tommies/Minnesota State winner
14. UConn
---
15. Augustana
16. UMass
Bid Stealers - Merrimack, Bentley/Sacred Heart

In this scenario, UConn still makes it as long as Michigan and Dartmouth/Cornell win their conferences. While a Merrimack loss would hurt our NPI, a BC win would also improve our NPI. UMass would only have the one loss to Merrimack and slip. Augustana also gets virtually no boost from either CCHA winner (1-1-1 vs. Mankato, 1-1-2 vs. Tommies).

This is still leaving our fate in the hands of 2-3 other teams. And this might just be my own opinion, but I think the committee is sending us to Sioux Falls (to be slaughtered by North Dakota) or Loveland if we do get in as an at-large.

Bottom line, win two this weekend and get our first HE title so we can play in Worcester/Albany.

There is a change coming to the NPI? Because the NPI is in use now.

Btw, Dartmouth will be headed to Hanover on Saturday morning. So we can't rely on them.

No, I mean that this is the first year of the NPI, so everyone has been assuming the stats will shake out a certain way, but there's always a chance for something wonky to happen with the numbers, especially when we get down to two and three decimal points.

Yeah, by now the stats are pretty much all interconnected. Friday night after the results are input the whole board will change, not just the teams that played. Likewise Saturday night. So unless you have a spreadsheet with the formulas in each cell and the entire season input, it will be impossible to make firm conclusions or do a Monte Carlo what-if analysis. I thought about doing that, and then I decided that I care, but I don't care that much.

Haha, yeah I feel you, I've mostly just been going off of this.

The Big Green will likely still be in Lake Placid after beating Clarkson on Friday.

The ultimate indignity would be missing the tourney by a NPI fraction behind UMass. Would give new meaning to “Lights Out.”

It would hurt, but that game never should have gotten to OT. If we also won either the Stonehill tie or the Vermont home loss, we'd probably still be in a must-win scenario on Friday, but we'd feel a hell of a lot better about our overall odds.

I don't have the patience to go back through this whole thread to see if it was already mentioned. I was just setting the DVR since I won't be able to watch and noticed that it's on NESN+ and not NESN. There's also a Hockey East Face-off Live show on NESN+ from 6:30-7.

We play must win tournament hockey tomorrow and from I can see Cav didn’t do his 97.9 coaches show this week or do the zoom meeting that usually gets posted on YouTube on UConn Daily. If he did neither got posted online. What’s that all about? Did he skip it this week?

Friday should be a fun watch. Two good hockey games and plenty of talented kids to watch. Tomorrow night, segue from hockey into the UConn basketball game.

I'll be in Boston for the hockey games, so that will allow me to watch at least part of the men's game. All of it I hope. 10 p.m. is too late for me!

School only has

Overpaid ($100) and got Club 145

It seems UConn Sections are:

For the first time all season BC put Hagens and Letourneau on the same line together for their quarterfinal game vs Maine and they were electric. UConn is going to have their hands full with them.

Letourneau seems like a heck of a pick by the Bruins after only totaling 3 points his freshman season.

UConn will need to slow this game down, especially when Hagens and Latourneau are on the ice. Just muck this game up, take away time and space. Try to keep the game close and try to pull out the win in the 3rd. Should be a fun. Let's go Huskies.

So I’m at the Harp. Surrounded by Merrimack students. They’re probably wondering what grandma is doing here. I have seen one other UConn fan. Hope UConn people show up. It’s lonely here.

I checked out the alumni thing at Big Night Live but they had no TVs with the hockey or basketball games so I just went into the arena after like 20 minutes, decent amount of UConn people inside considering we probably won’t start until 7:30 (or later! 0-0 after 2 between UMass and MC)
