UConn Men's Soccer - 2025

2 pm Sunday!

It will be interesting to see if we get a capacity crowd of 5,100 for this game.

My son wants to go with a bunch of friends (particularly if Lafayette wins -- their top goal scorer is a former teammate)

.-.
I'll be doing the double that day. On campus for the soccer game and then over to Hartford for the basketball game that night.

UConn are physically bigger than Cornell, however, Cornell is very aggressive in every position and all their players have very good ball skills. They play their D very high which can make some teams very uncomfortable with the constant pressure. They have some nice victories and their losses and ties have been all competitive. UConn will need to make sure that they keep their defensive shape and recover quickly defensively. It should be a very good match. Cornell's midfielders are their strong point.

Against common opponents:

Cornell vs NJIT: 3-0 win at home
Cornell vs Akron: 0-0 tie at home
Cornell vs Syracuse: 2-1 win at home
Cornell vs Harvard: 0-0 tie away

UConn vs NJIT: 0-0 tie away
UConn vs Akron: 3-1 win away, 2-1 win neutral site
UConn vs Syracuse: 1-0 win away
UConn vs Harvard: 1-1 tie at home

Should be a tough but winnable game

I'll try to get off my butt and go. It's been awhile. The last UConn soccer NCAA game I attended, I had a six-pack under my parka. And it wasn't my abs.
when they banned kegs (I think after the 1981 or 1982 season, kegs were banned on campus in 1984), there was one ingenuous student who went and buried one in the student endzone. The beers were very frosty, but those were the days of a packed student section and pretty lax security.

Crowd today vs Cornell is disgraceful. Should have allowed kegs

Cornell took a 1-0 lead on a ball I think the goalie Durham should have had. It bounced off him, hit a post and went in. Brummett responded with a ground level diving header to tie the game at 1. With 1 second left on the clock before half time, Brummett put one between the goalie's legs for a 2-1 lead. It was a horrendous play by the goalie on a 2 hopper. This play was so bad, it made our football D yesterday look good. Regardless. The announcer said it was reminiscent of the Bill Buckner error vs the Mets. He's not wrong.

Edit: Both coaches got yellow cards at the half, but not sure why. May have been jawing with each other, but that's 100% a guess.

It does look sparse on TV. Maybe 1/2 full, or is that too generous?

.-.
Notable results from other NCAA games: 1) Defending champion and #2/3 ranked Vermont lost in OT to Hofstra 2) Akron of the BE beat ND 3) Georgetown and Seton Hall results pending 4) Maryland got by on PK vs NC.

Anything can happen.

I graduated in 1974. UConn soccer was a big deal then under Joe Marrone. There was no competition for a Sunday afternoon NCAA game from a Husky basketball game (women or men) on national TV. It is now the beginning of Thanksgiving break for students, which back in my day didn’t begin until the end of classes on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

I was at the men’s hockey game last night at Toscano. The student sections were sparsely
occupied.

Times change.

Big win by a very physical Huskies team. I was very disappointed with the crowd. This was an NCAA tournament game. We used to pack the stands for more or less every game back in the mid 80s. Tough test against Maryland coming up

7 seeded teams knocked out in the 2nd round including 5 of the top 6. 1,2,3,5,6 all eliminated. One more game still going #8 Portland about to go to OT vs Denver. Maryland is the only top 6 seed left at 4 and barely squeaked by on PKs. Anyone can win any given match.

3 Big East Teams left, all that were seeded with Gtown 7. UConn 13 and Akron 14 all advancing to Sweet 16.

Edit: Update #8 Portland did advance on PKs

And of course we are the team to play the highest seeded team left
