UConn Is New York Clty's Team
In 2010-11, UConn Men's Basketball was the Most Viewed East Conference Team In New York City
A combined 1.35 million households watched UConn basketball games ln the New York DMA
that were televised on ESPN or ESPN2. That number doubled the number of households
watching Syracuse games on ESPN or ESPN2 and was five tlmes more than the number of
households that watched Rutgers on ESPN or ESPN2.
The top two-rated Syracuse men's basketball games In the New York DMA in 2010-11 were In
fact games against UConn.
UConn's flve games In the BIG EAST tournament were watched by a combined 590,000
combined households In the New York DMA, while 385,000 watched Syracuse games - a
number which was inflated with one game against hometown St. John's. .
SNY (SportsNet New York) Recognizes The Popularity Of The UConn Brand
SportsNet New York (SNY) is the New York home of the New York Mets and the BIG EAST
Conference. Although they have relationships with Syracuse, Rutgers, Seton Hall and St. John's,
the relationship ls unique as, the network devotes over 300 programming hours a
year to both UConn men's basketball and football. number of program hours is almost
double the number of hours devoted to Rutgers programming and Syracuse receives only two-
third of that amount of hours.
Not only does SNY show more UConn games than those of any other school, they also present
live pre--game and post--game shows of UConn events, a broadcast of weekly football press 1
conferences, weekly rebroadcasts of football and men's basketball games, and condensed
versions of football replays. This programming is unlque to UConn and SNY when compared to
other BIG EAST schools.
UConn men's basketball games were watched by a combined 355,000 households on SNY during
the 2010-11 season over the course of 13 games. These 13 games were contests that were not
selected by ESPN or ESPN2. A total of 120,000 combined households In the New York DMA i
watched UConn basketball on SNY before January 1, 2011 -when overall Interest In college
basketball ls low.
In 2011-12, UConn will make 13 appearances on SNY, while Syracuse, Rutgers and St. John's will
each make fewer than 10.

Apparently, it is old email uncovered by the CTPost last year.

But, the CTPost only dealt with the realignment stuff and didn't say much about UConn in NYC. So this info may be new to many of us.

Nice, but also fairly irrelevant today. 10-11 is kind of a unique period in Uconn MBB BE tournament history.

Yes we are the favored program in NYC, but this feels forced to me.

Keep reading. They go on to look at a 10 year period.

I read through all the emails... boy John Marianatto was a putz, huh. I bet he thought on Sept 1, 2011 that all was fine and dandy in the BE and that they would pick up some of the Big 12 leftovers...

Also, was "A&M" removed from every instance of the document?? Really strange.

Anyone else that what Burton is suggesting is replace RR for athletics insider in this role?

Well it should be discussed - don't know what she brings to the table. SH has to get out of her comfort zone and find the right people for this extremely important job.

UConn needs to schedule more games in NYC. Basketball and football. That gives national recognition. That way they will be able to attract big names. Maybe a game with ND basketball and football in NY. Or Duke or any of the other power 5 schools. If you want to think B1G then you have to think BIG. Playing in NY will attract these guys. They will not come to Hartford.

I am not sure I understand your point. We've had big schools like UNC, Kansas, Indiana, LSU, etc., all come to Hartford in recent years, as well as schools like Arizona, Oklahoma, Stanford and UNC in Storrs -- and Notre Dame, obviously, was in our conference for 15 years.

You want to have an off football game in Yankee Stadium or Citi Field? I'm OK with that -- but playing in Storrs or Hartford has never prevented us from adding anyone to our basketball schedule for a home-and-home.

But now that we are in the minor leagues you will quickly see things change with scheduling. We will have to bend over to attract national teams.

Maybe, maybe not. Take a look at this year's basketball schedule. Besides, I've got a lot of faith in our former point guard.

I agree that football scheduling will become significantly more difficult, however.

We've got some good ones coming for football the next few years. Take of business in those and the future will take care of itself.

Should be noted this was a Maryland home game and we were allotted a visitor amount of tickets. Uconn nation made it a neutral game

.-.
It was a Maryland home game. They control this game, they have a 3 year contract with Brooklyn.

We should have a contract with Barclays and MSG. C'mon Warde. This seems to be a no brainer.

Crowd tonight in Brooklyn was pro-maryland. As much as 3 to 1.
:(

I would call it 50/50. Looking around, I did not see many Maryland fans on the upper tier of Barclay’s and entire sections were also were curtained. I also spoke to a few Maryland fans sitting in front me and they said to the effect that tickets were in the $15 to $30 range and heavily subsidized (I bought my 2 tickets on Ticketmaster for $45, lower bowl). Wondering if Maryland was worried about UConn’s history at MSG, the Rock, Dunkin, etc. and did not want UConn fans to take over their home game.

Idiocy.

I'm scratching my head here. It was at least 75% Maryland fans. Everyone was wearing red and the Maryland cheers were LOUD and the UConn cheers were sporadic and isolated.

Were you at the game? Although UConn fans were outnumbered, the Maryland fans were pretty quiet until the closing minutes when they made it a game. UConn fans were pretty loud until the final minutes when everyone was holding their breath.

With my untrained eye, the lower bowl where I was sitting under the basket was about 50/50 UConn/Maryland fans. The lower bowl around the sidelines, especially behind the Maryland bench were heavy Red. In total, I would call the lower bowl, 60/40 Maryland. The parts of the upper bowl that were open appeared to be more blue than red, call that 60/40 UConn. Thus, I called it 50/50 overall. I also agree that Maryland, even with eth piped-in pro Terrapin music, were quite until they rallied after Napier’s Technical.

I was, yes. They had few opportunities to cheer but when they went on a couple mini-runs throughout the game and then their big run at the end, the place got really loud.

As a Red Sox fan living in NYC, I know what it's like to be rooting for the visiting team. I know what it feels like to jump up and cheer while everyone around you -- except for one guy here, and another guy there -- is seething. That's what it felt like.

Obviously we have a difference of opinion. But I'd be willing to bet every cent I have that it was at least 60% Maryland fans. And I still maintain (even though I wouldn't go poor over it), that it was more like 75%.

As I was walking in, I was bombarded by Maryland fans. EVERYONE was chanting pro-Maryland chants. I was astounded. And then I walked into the actual arena and there was red everywhere. It's almost like you and I went to different games.

So we had more fans show up at the football game? That is great to hear. We're big time.

Born and raised Yankee fan who lived in and around Boston for 15 years before moving to NY/NJ a few years ago. It’s good to be back among my people and when fellow fans give me a free beer at Yankee, it’s now handed to me instead of thrown at me. LOL. Now, if I can just convince my oldest son to forget that he was born outside of Boston and join the Evil Empire…
My section at Barclay’s (lower bowl, behind the basket opposite the main entrance) was defiantly 50/50. Can only eyeball the rest. It was defiantly a Maryland home game though as the Maryland fans near me told me that they got their ticket for $20 something via their alumni network while mine were $45 via Ticketmaster. They did admit that they were worried about UConn as they heard about what UConn fans do to MSG during the old Big E days and Kentucky brought a boatload of fans to Barclay’s last year when they played the Terps.
