Have you watched the games? Conditioning is a huge factor here. The NBA game is FAST and right now, DC isn't keeping up for extended minutes. It's what's causing his fouls, just like it did in Storrs.
Yeah, this feels a little like "if Jackson can just add a jump shot, he'd be unstoppable." Pretty big "if"!

Now, in Clingan's case, I think it's more doable. You get 24/7 attention in the NBA, and he's an incredible worker, but still, there's a lot of projection here that isn't guaranteed.

The NBA is faster but conditioning and fouls being a problem for him in college is overstated. 22.5 minutes per game last season and he averaged 2 fouls per game. He never fouled out.

If Hurley wanted less of the two headed monster and wanted to play Donovan 28 minutes per game last season Clingan could've done it.

I've said it before but once Clingan gets his conditioning right, he is going to be a real problem. Averaging 5 points (62.5% FG), 6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in just 12 and a half minutes per game. He has a PER of 21.6, which is #1 for all rookies. Improved conditioning should help the fouling problem (2.6 fouls per game in low minutes)

Hawkins has cooled off in the last couple of games but is averaging 16 PPG and 5 RPG shooting 44.3% FG and 40.6% 3P. If he can keep up his consistency (was a big issue for him last year), he will have 20+ minutes every game

Castle has been slow so far. 5 PPG, 3.5 APG but shooting 28% FG and is 0-8 on threes. It'll click for him eventually but hoped to see a stronger start
Hawkins just had 23 points and led all scorers for New Orleans, I don't think that is cooling off, against Golden State on 9-21 shooting. Yeah only 4-14 from 3 but it is nice to see him finding other ways to score. He might actually be better this year than last due to this progression. He was playing crunch time minutes again.

He played his way into shape, but I’d argue coming off that injury his conditioning and weight was worse than it should’ve been.

Castle has been struggling with the foul line jumper. He used to be really good at that in HS. Similar to Hawkins it’s something he’ll probably need to work on over the summer because teams are giving him it every time.

In Clingan’s defense. He was in great shape before the injury. He definitely seemed a lot more out of shape coming off of it.

I feel like that’s a hard argument to make with not really knowing the extent of his injury.

Hawkins handle looks better but he doesn't pass off the dribble. Almost every dribble is for a 15 foot pull up. Not horrible but he has room to grow.

Castle had a good second half, after a rough start today. He played the first half with the other bench players and they all looked horrid and got minutes in the second with Wemby and Paul and looked quite good.

Pelicans will likely be in hell but Hawkins is gonna get plenty of minutes/reps now

These Blazers guards/wings have no vision to hit DC with lobs, I wish he could have landed in Memphis with Ja when you see the lobs he's been setting up Edey with

Shoutout Hawkins helping me win a good bit of change tonight.

Didn't 2 pelican players have 26 and 34 points respectively?

Since Clingan is putting up some noteworthy rebounding and block numbers in limited minutes, I decided to look at some per 48 minute stats. Among all NBA players with at least 50 minutes played:

Blocks/48
1. Clingan, 6.3
1. Holmgren, 6.3
3. Wembanyama, 5.0
4. Sarr, 5.0
5. Kessler, 4.7
not top 5 - Edey, 0.9

Rebounds/48
1. Looney, 25.2
2. Clingan, 22.8
3. Drummond, 21.3
4. Sengun, 20.0
5. Jalen Smith, 19.7
not top 5 - Edey, 13.5

Of course, I should add:

Fouls/48
1. Clingan, 10.1
2. Yabusele, 9.7 (glad to see him back in the league, he was fun to watch in the Olympics)
3. Looney, 9.5
4. Edey, 9.0
5. Simmons, 8.7

DC has to work on some things offensively, foul less, and continue to improve his conditioning, but he's already providing impactful minutes, even if the team isn't doing great.

Hawkins has to be the early favorite to win most improved player.

Just checked DK and he’s not even posted for MIP but +2000 for 6th man.

Last nights Blazer game was a tough matchup for Cling. The Thunder rolled out a very small lineup and just spaced and shot threes (49), forcing Cling to chase much smaller guys around the perimeter. He looked pretty out of sorts. This accounted for about 55% of their shots.

You then look at the Celtics and their launch trends, and it furthers this concept of traditional bigs having less value in the new concepts. None of this is new obviously. Steph really needs to figure out his shot making as even defensive juggernauts like Jrue are shooting at a 40% clip from three.

Really wonder if the NBA would ever consider pushing back the line, as today’s strategies are pretty lame to watch and it’s showing in the viewership trends. I personally don’t find watching 4 6’5” jacking threes nearly as interesting as piecing a team together with a wider variety of parts and unique skill sets, ala football.

I agree last night was a tough matchup, since OKC went five out with Clingan on the floor. Part of that was to challenge Clingan, and part of was that was because Hartenstein is out. Of course, OKC and Boston are probably the two best teams in the NBA. Clingan might struggle against teams like that for a while. There still aren’t a lot of teams who can spread the floor that well, though, and his rim protection will always be valuable. At the same time, Clingan might eventually be able to exploit smaller defenders on the offensive end. I’m not sure Portland as a team is well-equipped to do that right now.
