UConn in the NBA Nov 2025

He had the primary assignment - but Spurs schemed and switched a lot. Doncic was 2-10 with Castle on him.

His turnovers were a subject in the press conference, though. It was a step back for him after decent ball security the last two games. He’s now at 40 assists and 35 turnovers for the year, which has to get better. When Fox and Harper are back, they can take the ball out of his hands more and reduce his role on offense.

What is the deal with the turnovers? Is it losing off dribble, lazy passes, over aggressive passes? This is a lot of turnovers.

From what I've seen it's mostly lazy passes. Not even him trying to force things, it's just stupid minor stuff that needs to be cleaned up. Not unexpected from someone who hasn't been a primary point guard.

Those things should be relatively easy to clean up with film study. Much easier to fix than getting your pocket picked because of a loose handle

Wouldn’t be surprised if the Spurs have purposefully took their time bringing Fox back to see what they had with Steph at the position.

Fox has been playing 5-5 since before the season started.

Will De'Aaron Fox play against the Los Angeles Lakers?

Fox definitely appears to be ready to play and has been playing five-on-five since before the start of the regular season.

Like, some REALLY terrible passes. He really didn’t do much of this last season. One cross court stolen by Luka was baddd, one just super lazy at the top of the key was an easy steal. I think he struggles sometimes with locking in on one target and can’t quickly enough process the second option. Improvement will come.

Castle needs the ball in his hands to improve. That should be the focus of the Spurs, not getting the ball out of his hands. The goal should be to make him an all-NBA player. For now, live with his mistakes. It will pay off in the long run.

Harper also needs the ball in his hands to improve - they drafted him too. Fox is perceived as a grizzled veteran, but he's only 27 - still has 5 or 6 years of his prime to go. How he factors in still remains to be seen.

The goal for the Spurs should be to build a championship team around Wemby. Where Castle fits in that blueprint is up to how he performs and how he best fits in that puzzle. Castle will play a lot - that's not an issue. He's averaging 20 ppg and taking the toughest defensive assignments. But they don't have to let him play through mistakes with the ball if their future blueprint for success involves someone else having it.

They already have a championship contending roster if Wemby remains healthy this season, Castle is the Robin to his Batman. Having Castle handle as much as possible is how they can contend. There's really no answer for a 7'5 freak and a strong explosive 6'6 point guard. Castle doesn't always have to be responible for initiating offense and can play off the ball but playing through his growing pains as he's on the ball is their best move IMO.

Defensively he is robin for sure, people are very quick to dismiss Fox but he is an elite PG. Castle has been shooting better but he needs to keep working on that, he won’t have the ball as much in a couple weeks. But, it’s great for the Spurs to have 3 superb options to run the offense. I assume Mitch Johnson will likely keep 2 of them on the floor pretty much at all times, it is going to be a very fun team to watch.

No great secret that it's a bit of a different analytics era now where the midrange is largely shunned in the NBA, and that's spilled into college. We have bought into that philosophy quite a bit in recent years - we only took one 2-point shot yesterday that wasn't in the paint. Lamb developed that trademark floater, but the analytics people now describe the floater as the worst shot in basketball, so the NBA would probably coach that right back out of him if he played today.

Not saying we should have been a contender in 2012 - but it was a rather catastrophic dropoff after losing only one player, however great that player may have been (when we had his replacement waiting as an understudy, who proved to be quite competent). If we don't beat West Virginia in overtime in the BET quarters, we might not have made it in. Lamb realistically isn't near the top of the list of reasons to blame for that - he improved from his first year to his second and took on more responsibility. But when we asked him to make the leap from Robin to Batman, which was probably good for his personal development, it was part of a broken puzzle. We saw some of the same things happen with Scott Burrell, Albert Mouring and Jerome Dyson, too. All of whom also had future first-team All-Americans and/or lottery picks in their supporting casts. Boat to some degree could be included (although that year, I think DD leaving and Purvis not really being all that Ferrarish left our talent level too thin, whereas those other seasons, we got way better the next year - going from NIT to the Top 10).

The roster didn't really fit in 2011, either. We didn't have anyone to play the 4 - our stretch fours weren't strong enough or good enough shooters (Roscoe, JCD), Olander started token minutes. We would play Okwandu and Oriakhi together. That was a mess. Oriakhi was not a good post option for a 4-out, 1-in style of play. The 2023 team didn't necessarily fit either on paper - Newton and Jackson got in each other's way on offense (neither spaced the floor well when the other had it), and Sanogo and Clingan were two of our five best players and couldn't play together.
Great analysis and interpretation. Thanks for taking the time to expound on player development from the past as well as deep insights on the NBA effects as well.

Athough you can now practice all summer, I don't think I can be convinced a player will get better training in college than the in the pros. Stay in college if you aren't 1st round, you need to develop emotionally, or you just love school, want a chance a championship, and nil incomparable or better.

Why do I feel hw611 doesn't think there is capable coaching and training in the pros?
When you add up the NIL money you can make along with college education it is a great incentive for many/most to stay longer or finish school from a lifetime perspective. Coming out of college a millionaire with college education should make you set for life before you even begin your career. Wow. I like the odds of that bet vs most who will leave early.

Really cool to see Castle battle with Amen who’s probably the player he’s most similar to in the league at this point.
Amen actually shooting surprisingly well too. Only thing missing from his game

Steph is +18 so far. Apparently the turnovers are being pretty well compensated by the other parts of his game. Big picture.....
I don't think there's a better guard/wing defender in the league and he just fills up the stat sheet, a lot of loud plays too. He's going to be one of the most elite 2 way guards in the league for a very long time. He's a star.
