OT: UConn in space

Thank you for posting this, Nan! Going to space is a huge accomplishment, and having an astronaut among its alumni is something any university should really stress.

I agree and the University that is considered the Cradle of Astronauts is in my hometown of West Lafayette, IN. Purdue has had 26 graduates become astronauts, the most famous one was Neil A. Armstrong, the first man on the Moon.

But before him were three astronauts that who were supposed to be the first Apollo 3 man crew. They were Roger Chaffee, Gus Grissom, and Ed White. They all three perished in a flash fire in January 1967 during a simulated launch. All three were also Purdue graduates, below is a link.

Relevance to the OP?

I had a Latin teacher in 1966 who thought he was a funny guy. He would tell us to go home and "Tell your Mom you're a space cadet. You're taking up space in school."

Thanks for posting this. I am surprised that it is Purdue, if I had taken an uneducated guess I would’ve guessed Texas. Also, I was unaware about the original three astronauts. I guess you can still learn something new everyday.

Your post got me researching colleges and astronauts. I am getting all sorts of conflicting information. There is this list below, where three of the military academies top the list. Purdue is the top university besides the academies, but it only lists 15 astronauts, while most sources say 27. Also, MIT is credited with the most with numbers between 32 to 44. Regardless, it doesn’t change the fact that I would not have guessed Purdue is that high up on the list.

He also delivered a UConn commencement address from space:

I didn’t take time to research it, but I believe UConn has at least one, and perhaps two other astronauts. I know that a classmate of mine was an engineer for the shuttle missions.
