Can’t even worry about our offense at this point…need to find someone who can throw strikes first.

No question, all these walks and hit by pitches by the UConn pitching staff have been absolute killers.

Fogell gets a strikeout to finally end the inning. 7-2 Hawaii.

Good night all, time to hit the sack for me.

Must say, the Hawai’i team sounds well supported. The crowd sounds decent sized and loud.

Top 5…UConn gets a runner to second but follows with 2 strikes outs. CJ not happy with the strike zone. Calls it “a flip of the coin”. Umpire Eric Martinez apparently will not see a stint in the pros. Runner to 3rd on a steal. Run scores, Huber with an infield RBI single on a bad throw. 7-3 Hawai’i. CJ is amazed by the home plate ump and not in a good way…Studley lines a base hit, Huber to third. Padilla pops up. 7-3 after 5.

Bottom 5. Fogell pitching gets the lead off hitter for a change. That’s a start. Fogell walks the second hitter. Ground ball bobbled by Padilla and there are runners on 1st and second with one out. Fogell goes 2-0 on the next hitter and is yelling at himself…he should probably be out of the inning. Chopper to Huber results in an out, runners to 2nd and 3rd. CJ says 2500-3000 in the seats tonight…it sounds it. Smith with the catch on a deep drive. Still 7-3 Hawai’i after 6.

.-.
2 hours in and it’s only the top of the 6th. Broadhurst flies out. Garbowski with a base hit. Tammaro with a 2 run homer. 7-5. UConn climbing back into it. Smith Ks after being ahead in the count, 2 down. Morton gets an infield hit…1st baseman pulled his foot off the bag early. Tying run to the plate with a pitching change coming and Freeburger on deck. Hawai’i bringing in lefty Atkins. CJ says Atkins has a nice head of hair…”good lettuce flowing out of that cap.“ UConn has 10 hits to Hawai’i 7. Freeburger Ks. 7-5 Rainbow Warriors heading to the bottom of 6.

Bottom 6-Fogell with a K to start the inning. CJ says the called strike 3 was at the batters ankles. Bad calls have gone both ways tonight. Another strikeout and it’s back to back Ks for Fogell and he is done for the night. CJ says probably a pitch count thing as he may be needed tomorrow. Kirby to the mound. 5 runs 10 hits for Us, 7 runs 4 hits for them. Kirby gets the out on a grounder to second. Huber, Studley and Padilla coming up. 7-5 Hawaii after 6.

Top 7…meat of the order up. Huber walks on 4 pitches. Tying run to the plate again in Studley and he hits it hard to center but it’s an out. CJ says he’s had hard luck. Fan’s frustrated with the home plate ump. Padilla walks and Broadhurst will hit with runners on 1st and 2nd. Hit to short, over throw to first…it was hit slowly, tough play…2 runs score and we are tied at 7. Broadhust to 3rd. Garbowski hitting and a base hit gives UConn the 8-7 lead. Pitching change coming. Righty Trevor Ichimora coming in to pitch for Hawai’i. Tammaro batting. Still only one out. Base hit and it’s 1st and second with one out.

Smith and Morton fly out and UConn has the lead 8-7 going into the bottom of the 7th.

Bottom 7 Kirby still pitching…he gets the K. Kirby is dealing and he gets another K. Kirbs gets a ground out to Huber and it’s a 1,2,3 inning. 8-7 UConn after 7.

Freeburger, Huber and Studley coming up in the 8th. Freeburger strikes out for the forth time tonight. Huber walks for the 3rd time tonight…or should I say this morning? Studley to the plate. He hits a rocket off of the pitcher and everyone is safe. Runners at 2nd and 3rd for Padilla. Some insurance would be nice here. Bri hits one to third and it’s bobbled. Bases are juiced for Broadhurst. He grounds into a double play and it remains 8-7.

Whelp…it’s 3:44 and as much as I want to quit, I’m afraid to change the mojo at this point. So I’ll take one for the team and hang in there. Huber with the unassisted put out for the first out of the 8th. Kirby still pitching and he gets his third K for the second out. Kirby with another K and we go to the ninth. Great outing for Kirby.

Garbowski to lead off the 9th. Base hit for Garbo and his 3rd hit of the evening. Tammaro at the plate. Ripped for a double...a three hit night for Tammaro and a triple shy of the cycle. 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Smith at the dish. Smitty gets an infield hit and the bases are loaded with no outs for Morton. Hawai’i will bring in a new pitcher. I also wish they would throw out the fan screaming quite loudly and continually at the Huskies. Here we go…Morton with a chance to bust it open. Morton Ks on a full count and he can’t believe it. CJ with the reminder that with this ump, you can’t count on anything….gotta swing the bat. Freeburger drops one in for a 2 run single. 10-7 UConn! 17 hits so far. Most of the season. Huber Ks and it’s up to Studley to get us some more runs. No one warming in the pen. Kirby will try to finish it. Base hit…2 runs score on a Studley triple. UConn up 12-7. Padilla will try to keep it going. RBI single for Bri and it’s 13-7. I’m glad I stayed up! Broadhust with a double and its second and third with 2 outs. Tammaro at the plate and he flies out. Great inning!

Kirby out for the bottom of the ninth. He walks the lead off batter. Sac bunt, good play by Kirby for the out. Runner at 2nd with one out. Base hit to right and it’s a five run game, 13-8. 7 of 8 Hawai’i runs are players who walked. Take out the walks and we win going away. Smith with the catch on the pop fly. One out away from a win for Kirby. Grounder to Bri and it’s over. Great comeback and a great effort by Kirby! See you all later! UConn wins 13-8. Wonderful spending the night with CJ.

Good job Bomber and especially Kirby and team. Nice bounce back win. Also great night for Tammaro with 3 hits including his first hit as a Husky

Thanks Bomber, sounds like the bats were clicking. Still hitting into a lot of DP's but I guess that's contact and better than k's. Sounds like we have a lot of guys who can hit and deserve ABs. Just need to get those walks and HBP under control. That is the one big difference from last year to this year, our lack of control. Nice win.

If Hawaii actually sacrificed with one on and no one out in the 9th, down 6, no more evidence is needed about the decline of America. Hopefully, he was bunting for a base hit.

The good news is we had a big comeback, got a win and our 7-4 record hasn’t yet killed our season. And that Garbowski hopefully broke out of an awful slump. The bad news is that we’re not going anywhere without much, much better pitching and having a roster of pitchers who can at least throw strikes. Quinn’s issues have to be mental — he had a promising freshman year and he now literally can’t get anyone out or even make them swing the bat.

I was wondering why they bunted in the 9th as well.

As for pitching, too many walks. Quinn's ERA is 243. Kirby and Fogell were the stars of the pitching staff but they each had one walk as well along with 4 and 3 K's.

@Bomber36, thanks for taking over late in the night! Have to say, after listening to that dreadful 4th inning, I wasn't expecting the big comeback that UConn produced. But as I've said before in the past, UConn baseball always seems to have comebacks in them. Good to see it going on this season as well.

Still have to go back and look at everything that transpired after the 4th inning. Looks like after I went to bed that UConn got very good work out of the bullpen from Fogell and Devin Kirby (nice to know that he was available to pitch). In the last 5 innings, UConn pitching only gave up 2 walks, and that no doubt helped to change the tone of the game.

As for the offense, looks like a major turnaround, as everyone in the lineup made contributions. Chris Jones has been saying during almost every game broadcast that he was expecting that Garbowski would turn things around at the bat, considering he hit well last season, and also since he got to watch him in fall ball. Well, Garbowski finally had a good night at the plate, getting 3 hits and a walk, scoring 2 runs and getting 1 rbi. Now Ryan Hyde needs to get going as well, I expect he will be catching Sears in the game tonight, as he seems to be the personal catcher to Sears at this point in the season.

Also, good to see Padilla starting to produce some after a poor first 3 weekends of the season at the plate.

After not having a good night at the plate in the first game in Hawaii, Paul Tammaro in his second start after sitting on the bench to start the season had a solid night at the plate, coming up with 3 hits, including a double and a homer. Tammaro got 2 starts in a row against lefty starting pitchers. Tammaro also has an excellent defensive reputation as an infielder. When you are a bench player under Coach Penders, you really need to produce when you get an opportunity, and if you keep producing it will lead to more opportunities. I'm sure other bench players will get a chance to play in the coming days, we'll see how they do.

The big turning points in the game were the work of Fogell out of the bullpen which gave UConn a chance to win and was pitching with conviction, and the Tammaro homer which gave the dugout a new attitude in the game.

memorable quote "Ray Charles at the plate"

Have to agree about that quote, Smith had a terrible night in that first game of the series. Smith with the leadoff double in this game also helped change the tone for this game as well.

Went to bed when it was 7-3 Hawaii. Great comeback win…we certainly need to pitch better.

I would use midweek games to get Quinn right.

What I like about these 4 game series is that it semi prepares the team for a regional where you need a staff to get outs.

The game last night went 3 hours and 50 minutes, had a feeling it was going to be a long one especially after that 4th inning. More kudos for @Bomber36 for lasting it out, especially after having the UConn ice hockey playoff game that was played late yesterday afternoon.

Chris Jones was talking about the strike zone right from the beginning of the game last night.

I get the idea that the UConn coaching staff likes Quinn quite a bit. Suspect he will still get chances to show what he can do, but not necessarily in tight games against quality teams. UConn pitching staff does appear to have quite a bit of depth this season, even with all the walks that have been happening. The weekend starting pitchers from last season really spoiled us in that regard but good, that's for sure.

The season changes a bit this weekend, as UConn will now be playing a games in the midweek from now through the end of April. There will no longer be any long breaks between games, so the team can get into more of a rhythm of playing games more often than not.
