UConn-FSU post game

Only worry, is Blanca may be falling behind in the rotation assessments. Where is she going to get her minutes? Injuries, even minor ones at the beginning of the season can really set some players back.

Hoping Serah begins to make the right reads. She has a lot of putback possibilities being turned down for not so successful second guesses.
Yes, I too thought Serah was a bit indecisive in the first half and also in the Louisville game. I think the reason is because her prior team didn't have the scorers around her that this team has and that she is so far struggling at knowing when to kick the ball out or take it in herself. I do think that it will sort itself out once she gets better acclimated to the team.

In the postgame interview, Geno said Serah is adjusting to the speed of the game. She sometimes isn’t at the speed of her teammates in some plays while in others she gets too sped up but he likes the direction she’s going in

Scoring 99 points against an ACC team in the second game of the season is something to celebrate. Yes, there was some bumpy play in the first quarter and some head scratching blown layups, but nothing to cause heartburn for the fans (although I am sure Geno will have a few things to say).

Azzi and Sarah are going to have a dynamic and effective supporting cast this year. Great to see how the whole crew is playing right now. They all seem locked in and chemistry looks great. I think Ash is pressing a little bit, but I have no reason to think she won't figure things out.

I was pleased to see them get to the free throw line and hitting 14 out of 15 for the team bodes well as the season progresses.

.-.
A couple of observations:
  • About Serah, she seems to be finding her comfort level with UConn’s pace of play. Wisconsin simply did not play at this speed. You could see the problem really clearly in the first half. She wanted to receive an entry pass into the low post and then go to work in a crowd. But that’s too deliberate a process for this game. Jana suffered from this last season too. She expected to have to grapple with double and triple teams at Wisconsin and still plays that way. But with all the other scoring threats here she can put up a shot much more quickly or if the double comes she can kick it out to one of the many shooters she now has. These are skills she already has in abundance. It’s just a matter of getting comfortable thinking at the new pace of play. I have a very good feeling she’ll get there sooner rather than later.
  • Carol looks really good. Could there be setbacks? Sure, but why worry about stuff like that now. Let’s just enjoy the beauty of her game. And it is beautiful. One vintage moment: she gets the ball on the wing and drives left to the baseline with a defender on her hip. The defender has a quickness advantage and can keep Carol from getting all the way past her. But she doesn’t realize Carol isn’t trying to get all the way past her and can finish with a signature floater merely by reaching past her along the baseline. Result, a little one handed floater drops in. I hope we see a lot more plays like that in the coming months.
And don’t get me started about Allie, who played exactly like Geno wanted her to, on defense as well as offense. Go Allie!

Before you send your All-American ballots in, Florida State was picked to finish 1 in the weak ACC. Oooops that's a typo. Florida State was picked to finish 10th in the weak ACC. While their program has a good reputation, this year they are a cupcake. Please don't start sounding like other boards where the 'fans' are so surprised at winning big they assume they are national championship material. This is UConn Nation. We don't hype cupcake wins. View this game as what it was. A dress rehearsal for the regular season. Geno could have opened his locker room comments with something like, "OK, good practice, really good practice."

Don't agree with this perspective one bit. We are number 1 in the country for a reason. Barring injury SS and Azzi will be all-Americans. There is no reason for those us that are certain this will happen in our opinion to not say it. And there is zero reason not to celebrate this latest game or the prior regardless of the opponent. I'm not the head coach neither is anyone on here. For those that can’t enjoy blowouts and/or just overall winning regardless of the opponent- then I feel a little sorry for that fan. But if that’s how one likes to do it- fine. But it's not mine. I love dominance and am proud as fan to watch my team exhibit this.

UConn certainly needed to play good against a so called cupcake or else how are they going to prove that they can play as well against a ranked challenger.
UConn made it look like they were playing a BE team, but Florida State played better than most BE teams. Perhaps that's why UConn was a little bit discombobulated at times.
But I really liked seeing a lot of fresh legs for UConn in the game.

I know this will not go over well, but I wasn't really happy to see Meghan Culmo doing color for the game. I've never been a fan of hers, as she is always critical of some of the players, as well as some of their play. I assume this was supposed to be a neutral called game being on national tv, but her homer attitude kicked in. In my opinion she was not ever a good color person, but she was a staple with SNY, so it was the only game in town. Enough said, I just hope she isn't going to be the main person going forward. We will find out Wednesday when the game is broadcast in on Trutv.

Thoughts:

  • Azzi and SS playing like AA's
  • Serah finally looked like what we expected in H2. Give her time.
  • KK playing well. Nice Soph-Jr improvement
  • Shade always love her hustle but seems like struggling to finding her place in the O
  • Allie great minutes
  • K9 is becoming my fave. I said in another post, she'll be an AA candidate by her Sr year
  • Jana looked more confident and conformable
  • Ice looked a little shaky and not really in the offensive flow. I see her getting less time
  • CD and AP good minutes
  • Kelis Fisher looks physically mature but still raw as expected
I’m always amazed when I see Kelis on the court because she always looks bigger than I expected.

Love your attitude and glad you have that opinion. I enjoyed the game very much. Caroline just thrilled me when she hit that drive with what was a signature move of putting the ball on the rim so fast, I hardly saw her start the move. I loved Jana racing up the court. Seeing how much better her hands were and the consistent scoring at the rim. But I've been here too long to hype performance over a team with neither the skill nor coaching to put up any resistance. It was a practice game and a really good practice. I agree with you, it was very enjoyable.

FSU is not a cupcake, pretentious thing to say. Brooke battled cancer for awhile and this is the first year shes back to normal, our recruiting class coming in next season reflects that. Continue to enjoy being top tier, because in ten years Geno will be sitting on a beach.

While I reject @Crazyhorse 's sentiment and resentment, I also think FSU is not a cupcake. They are a rebuilding team and there is some disarray. But they have some really solid talent -- Emma Risch looked really good, as did Solé and though she's still a bit rough around the edges Pania has tremendous potential. 7 new players is a lot to fit into a smoothly functioning team in November and yet they managed to score 64 against the #1 ranked team.

The point @HuskylnSC seems to miss is that folks aren't pretending this was a top-20 team, or even a top 5 team. They are looking at the team to assess potentials, not present achievements. When we saw Carol and Ayanna getting some minutes, we all celebrated. They may not be ready right now to start on an NC contender in April, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be thrilled for the possibility, however remote, that they could play a major role at some point in this season.

The recurring chorus of so-called 'realists' who think enthusiasm is foolish is misplaced in this early. Yes, we should recognize as much as we can the real challenges facing the team. But in November that is not a focus that many of us can sustain, not after 6 months without Husky basketball. Don't worry, just as the Huskies will grow into their full potential, whatever that may turn out to be, in the next several months, so too us fans will gradually temper our outlandish hopes as the season teaches what is really possible.

That’s cause she has “Strong hands”! Her hands are just unbelievable! I always thought Paige had/has good hands (and she does) but Sarah’s are on a different level. I’ve probably said this before but I don’t think I’ve ever seen her equal.
Napheesa Collier had very strong hands, perhaps the best if any UConn player I can recall. She would make shaky passes part of a highlight reel.

I agree. FSU has just as skilled players as Lville. They are trying to blend a lot of transfers but the transfers mostly were good players on good teams. I thought UConn was much better in executing their game plan than the Lville game. I think that came through loud and clear which is separate from the level of competition. I wouldn't be surprised if FSU gets into the 20s ranking by the end of the season.

Really glad Geno was able to achieve his rotation goals. After two games, my only concern is outside of Sarah, none of our bigs (at the moment) possess a consistent inside game. As we face some of the better perimeter defensive teams that also have very capable bigs, Serah and to some extent JAE are the only ones that could take the concern away. We all know that "bulletproof" as Hurley would say is something we are looking for. In tight games where we need a bucket inside it would be nice to have an offensive presence to take pressure off our guards. I'm nit picking here but I would say that's my only concern at the moment. This does not take away my current thoughts on team. I'm quite happy with how we look and can't imagine how we will look come Feb-Mar.

That said, FSU is at least 2 years away from being a ranked team again.

FSU is at least 2 seasons away from being ranked again.

I was remiss last night no to give a kudo to Kayleigh looking like a Husky moving well and finding her show. I have a nickname for her that is mine alone: Miss American Gothic. She's a fine addition.
Not sure if this has been posted before but I am waiting for Kelis to come off the bench and impact every game. Then our point guards can be called the Special Ks. Of course KK and Kayleigh could be called this right away but 3 is better than 2...

No resentment, all respect for UConn. The fact is being elite doesn't last forever, so enjoy it. I know, because I grew up going to Doak Campbell stadium and watching Bowden dominate teams, year in and year out, just like Geno has done. I've learned a lot about women's basketball from you and others on this board over the years, so thank you!

What a game! This team is only going to get better as the season and practice session goes on. When our 2nd unit can put points, defend, and rebound, oh we are going to be one tough squad to beat. We got a team total of 40 rebounds! I think I saw the stat line where we out rebound FSU 40/25? That was nice to see. Overall, I am proud of this team! The core players did not play over 25 minutes, which is huge!

Azzi- 23/3/5/2 on shooting 60% from the field with 40% from deep. Nice!
Sarah Strong- Another solid performance. She is the truth and plays the game so efficiently. No wasted motion.
KK-She understands the game in such a way that is beautiful to watch.
Ash- Same with KK. She just understands and envisions the game at a high level. Her and KK are so wonderful to watch play. Sure, we got Azzi and Sarah but Ash and KK are that extra elements that help a team greatly.
Serah-I am not worried. She did well and will continue to do well for the game. With so many options, she does not have to do it all and that is a huge plus. Much like when Dorka played at UConn, Serah will fall into that same window.

The Bench-
Kayleigh- What a nice option off the bench!
Allie- Same with Kayleigh. Having options like Allie, that coming off the bench and giving you those quality minutes offensively and defensively. That is huge. Allie looked great out there. Her confidence showed on her cuts and drives to the rim. Well done, Allie!!
Ice/Jana- Those two looked solid as well and will help down the stretch with Serah and Sarah. Ice still has great court vision. Jana should have been shooting free throws when she got "blocked" on that pass from Sarah. Any other play, that is a foul. Jana should have been shooting free throws.
Caroline/Ayanna/Fisher-Great see them out there on the floor! Caroline looked great out there. Always a joy to watch play. Ayanna is still a joy to watch and hopefully she gets more minutes. She just has a Jean Grey/Scarlett Witch vibe about her every time I watch her out on the court. Ayanna is just ready to unleash her cosmic powers. Yeah, I read a lot of comic books and watch a lot MCU movies. Fish is going to be solid PG for us this season and into the future. Her raw speed and quickness is phenomenal. She is going to be special for the program.

And we ain't forgot about you Morgan. Get well and can't wait to see you back out there. She is going to be another powerful force out there.

Well done, UConn!! Get ready for Loyola Chicago!
