UConn-FSU post game

I predict Kayleigh Heckel will be an AA candidate in her senior year.
She is a marvel and master of cutting toward the basket. Her nose for the ball is amazing. I love her quick first step and sense of the clock. Her being a serious third scoring option is very apparent. We have a couple of the best guards in women's basketball.

I'm going to go one step further about Ash/Allie/ Caroline. I have always thought that Ash is a much greater weapon off the bench like last year and that is the best role for her for this team. Microwave offense when she is on, sneaky offensive rebounding, and solid hustle and D. Honestly, Allie played really well today but Caroline looked really good too. She had 5 points and should have had 8 but a 3 was taken away, 6 boards and two assists in 10 minutes. She is also a much better rebounder at 6' 2+"than either one. I think she should be part of the regular rotation. She is a strong and serious senior leader and sets up a play really well. I would like to see her play 20 minutes in a game just to find out. It may be coming.
I'm not sure that anyone would argue that a 100% Caroline would be the best option at the 3. If she keeps building consistently from this game, she could be the starting SF by the end of the season. This was the first time I've thought that. Before this game, I just thought she would be a happy warrior learning how to be a coach this year.

She looked the best she has since the injuries. That pass to Ice was a special play.

I was at the game but I haven't watched the replay yet. Mostly I agree with the above comments, but I think Caroline's performance today has to be highlighted. I suspect that she has been playing the same way in practice, based on the fact that she was the first of the current non-rotation players who came off the bench (late in the first half). That put her ahead (notably) of Ice, as well as Kelis and Ayanna.

Most notably, she had 6 defensive rebounds in 10 minutes. Not bad for a "guard". She also swished two 3-point shots, although one was washed out due to her own offensive foul. And she was NEVER in the wrong place, on offense or defense.

Blanca had better get back pretty soon or Caroline will eat her minutes. The same may apply to Morgan.

Also, I didn't think Ashlynn was as bad as everyone seemed to think. She played her hustle game with reasonable success -- she had 4 rebounds (3 offensive) in 20 minutes. She may have been putting pressure on herself and making mistakes for that reason, but I don't think there is any reason for long-term concern.

Allie and K9 both played very well. Kayleigh has shown improvement in each game she has played at UConn.

That's a good point about Caroline. She knows where to be and when. Great position to rebound and she knows the offense better than anyone.

Definitely possible. Very impressive performance today. A natural UCONN player.
I don't know if that would be the case, but I think it would be a good bet that she'll be on the watch list for the Nancy Lieberman Award.

I was a the game and it was a full house, raucous crowd, lots of fun. The banner raising was joyous - the banner is way over at the end of the rafters across from the UConn bench. Figuring out where the 2026 banner will go is a nice problem to have!

All the current players who were on the 2025 team were introduced, and Aubrey was also in attendance and was introduced. Kaitlyn Chen and Paige made some nice remarks on video on the scoreboards.

Morgan Cheli was in a boot. Both Gandy and Blanca participated in pregame warmups.

We had fourteen players warming up and they had nine. For those of us who have been seeing the exact opposite for many years, it was a welcome sight.

I am pretty sure that Olivia Vukosa was at the game, behind the UConn bench.

What more can you say about Sarah and Azzi. Both clearly playing at a first team AA level.

The one other who who stood out in person to me is Heckel. She is something. Quick, fearless, aggressive, and is very good at creating her own midrange shot like someone else we know who now plays for a team in Dallas. She has definitely thus far exceeded my expectations for her.

Serah is not going up strong inside as much as I would hope. I don't understand kicking it out when you are two feet from the basket. She did that a couple of times. She missed a few bunnies. The UConn weight room will pay dividends for her.

Aside for a tentative start to the game and a horrendous start to the fourth quarter, it was a very impressive performance. Geno handled the subbing very well. With two or three more coming on board, it won't get any easier for him. But way better than a couple of years ago when he could barely field a team.

Similar to the National championship game, the pedal to the medal occurred when Geno went to the "small" lineup in the second quarter. Davis, the big center for Florida State, could not come close to containing Sarah. If Sarah is not the player of the year, then I will be very surprised.
Serah is trying to find her place to shoot instead of shooting from the place she is in. I hope it stops. The one time she went up for a jump shot instead of a lay up it was perfect. You are 6'4" and strong. Just go straight up. Get fouled. This isn't rocket science.

I have to keep reminding myself to not be a stereotypical spoiled UConn fan. The Tournament Huskies earned the nickname well oiled machine. This team is not there but I suspect it will get there and quicker than last year's team. Right now there is a lot of not pretty, but the team certainly is getting it done. I want to see Ash dropping 3s and Sareh come up to speed. I don't mean MPH she moves up and down the court in an impressive fashion. Glad to see KK get her 7. There, that's my way of saying for November they are doing fine.

PS. Sarah has an uncanny knack for attracting an offensive play and inexplicably stealing the ball. One second FS is coming up court you blink and Sarah is headed the other way with the ball.
That’s cause she has “Strong hands”! Her hands are just unbelievable! I always thought Paige had/has good hands (and she does) but Sarah’s are on a different level. I’ve probably said this before but I don’t think I’ve ever seen her equal.

We saw alot of good play from alot of different players. We need Heckel to calm down the non starters late in the 3rd qtr and she did. Caroline Yana Ice and Allie looked good. Now Geno has another challenge...and that finding time for them too. KK and Heckel are solid at the point and both a pain in the A on D. We need more scorers. It was all Sarah and Azzi. Serah looks like she was settling in which is a big plus. This is going to be a very tuff team to contain. Alot of weapons and a defense that is very hard to describe because of all the adjectives needed.
Heckel is pretty solid at the point but I think by the time we get to March, she’s going to be outstanding! Just imagine what a few months of learning to do it the “UConn” way will do to her game. I think we will see the same effect with Serah as well. Now, where are my shades? 😎

When Serah Williams finds her scoring touch, this team will be what we are hoping it’s going to be. And everyone will be saying UConn is bad for women’s basketball, again.
I’m so glad I’m one of the few who wanted K9 on the team.
Can’t wait to see how Blanca makes an impact.
I hope Azzi and Sarah continue to sit for long periods, as long as they continue to average around 20 point per game. They can play 30+ minutes in March.

FYI, Fox Sports one has a replay of the game on right now. ( 10:06pm)

We need to work on our three-point defense. There's no way our opponents should be able to hit threes above their season average.
Other teams have scholarship players too. You can't shut them out. And when you are pressing/pushing pace and aggressively going for steals, you are going to get beat at times from somewhere. The tradeoff is worth it in order to keep pushing pace.

As Geno said, pressing creates turnovers but due to amount of court the team is trying to defend it also creates far more opportunities to hit 3s ( vs picking up the defense at half court of 3 quarters of the court). The team is obviously deep but Geno seems to rarely presses for the entire game (although his small lineup is brilliant at full court pressure).

Loved the minutes that Caroline got and the fact that she looked...well... darn good.
Loved what Serah did early in the 3rd quarter...especially her steal and breakaway
layup...a glimpse of what we'll see more and more of....all the way to April.
Whether Jana will ever be an AA on the court she is an AA on the bench...her cheering
and enthusiasm are SO entertaining...and I bet her teammates appreciate her....plus her play today was good...seems more
relaxed and composed.
Fun to see so many from the bench on the court.

Host Ohio State next weekend....a good test.
Loyola Chi first, Wednesday evening.

Geno addressed that during the post-game presser. You can full-court press, or you can guard the 3-point line. Very difficult to do both. Just have to be prepared to do either, and let the game dictate their choice.

Heckel really stood out to me today. KK and K9 work great together on D. Love K9!s midrange game as well. Williams is getting better so I won’t worry about her.

Nice to see both Caroline and Patterson return and score.

Meg might have gotten a few things wrong announcing but great to hear her laugh broadcasting.
