Where did I say “UConn would tie him to a DC”? All I said “it would not surprise me if DB tries to negotiate for Spanos”. Along the lines of “hey you know we have a guy here who might make a good DC if you’re looking for one”. If he tried to make Spanos contingent on getting the HC job, that’s nuts, which is what you’re suggesting.

No.. I think even suggesting to the head coach that he retain Spanos is nuts. You don't want to appear to be the meddling AD, let alone suggesting a DC who's teams have produced points allowed rankings in the bottom 10 among all FBS schools coupled with yards allowed ranks among the bottom 15. You come up with that suggestion to a coach that you're paying $3.5M for, which would be 40th among all head coaches nationally (as of last year's list, most recent 1-130 ranking I could find) and the top or second-highest (depending on what you think about Houston and their impending move to the Big XII) salary in the G5 for.
You hire the guy.. if they ask for a suggestion or if there is anyone that should be retained you can offer feedback, but otherwise you let the guy do the job (and if they are coming in without an idea of who they want as their coordinators, that would be a giant red flag).

100 percent whoever comes in to rebuild has got to feel that they are in full control. Unless the y ask you don’t force anybody on them. I could see maybe the new guy out of respect offering spanos a position job but he’s going to want to bring in the coordinators that he believes in

We are very young. We've been starting two freshmen and three sophomores. Our second string D has like 9 freshmen out of 11. I'm not sure we should judge Spanos by anything but the improvement of the entire team since he took over.

I'm wondering if AD David Benedict has Spanos in his sight as HC. With Mazzone as OC he can get other assistant coaches for DC, maybe see if DO would be a QB coach (just to have a QB from RE 1.0 era, to placate the fans), and other up and coming coaches.

DB knows that this is his one and only chance to get it right. He is not going to hire IHC-LS just because he brought in a legit OC as a consultant and is taking his advice.
Please just stop with that over done suggestion. Dave doesn't care about decommits, he doesn't care that the current kids seem to like and respect Spanos. He cares about winning and now has the freedom to make the best decision that he can make for the future of UConn football and college football in our state.
If Spanos gets the interim tag removed that's Dave throwing in the towel and telling the world he is comfortable enough at UConn and has no aspirations to be a Power 5 AD.

I’d give some credit to Spanos for bringing Mazzone here, but the credit goes to Mazzone to get the offense playing competitively.

A.D. Dave has a keen eye for identifying coaching talent. He brought Lashlee in as O.C. & FHCRE destroyed that relationship. (Lashlee's wife not liking the area is a great cover story). He pulled the plug on K.O. & replaced him with Dan Hurley.
This will be his litmus test. He will be unfettered by constraints of boosters, area high school coaches, or the fanbase at large.
I trust D.B. to get this hire right. If he succeeds , he's just doing his job. Failure would be a huge blot on his professional resume & he doesn't want that as his legacy.

How is Mazzone doing with freshman’s on offense? You can give excuses all you
want, but really good coaches get the best out of players.
QB - Tyler Phommachanh (FR) was inserted when Mazzone came along, other QBs sophomores
RB - Nate Carter (FR)
WR - Aaron Turner (FR), Keelan Marion (FR), Clercius (R-FR), other WRs sophomores
TE - Rose is being backed by a FR in Niemenski
C - Fortin (FR)
T - Lundt (R-FR)
Mazzone has them playing competitively, no excuses.

I’m not advocating we hire Spanos at all. I’m just saying, he’s done a good job and blaming the current staff for what were clearly Randy’s failings isn’t fair. The team and the coaches are all looser, happier and better at their jobs since he’s been gone. If Randy didn’t run off all of our experienced players, maybe Spanos’ D would be better.

To get a coach who commands $3.5M means you are getting his O and D coordinators and coordinators who work for a $3.5M coach get $750k each. And then there's the rest of the staff.
A $3.5M HC means $3M in asst coach pay.
If UConn is willing to do that and has the resources lined up to do that, color me excited.

This is a weak uninformed take. The defense started the season playing well in the first half against Fresno. The offense was so bad in game 1 and it was so hot (120degrees) that it is completely understandable that the defense caved in the second half.
Again, game two the offense laid a horrible egg. Just terrible interceptions. Edsall gets fired.
Since then Spanos to his credit has taken us from playing awful football to nearly winning a game in which we were a 30 point underdog with a freshman QB making his second start and then last week being one play away from winning on the road with our back up QB.
That is why some of us are impressed by Spanos. We haven't been this competitive in a long time and add on top of that Spanos makes a phone call to bring in his former associate at UCLA and our offense is suddenly playing state of the art read/option mis-direction football something we have never done.
Flush your lame hot take down the toilet where it belongs. Be better than that.
