OT: UConn doesn't guarantee on campus housing for freshmen?

I understand the complaints from current sophomores and juniors. UConn has always referenced their 4 year housing as a benefit. But I will say that when my daughter was looking at the school last year they seemed to walk that back. I think I remember a "for now" mentioned.

But, this is pretty standard for big public universities. I'm sure there are some schools that guarantee four years, but none that I'm aware of. My kids' friends are moving off campus as sophomores at schools like Indiana and Wisconsin. The key is, of course, that there needs to be enough off campus stock.

Also, have things changed at UConn with housing? When I went (30 years ago... uggh) most of the people I knew lived off campus for at least part of their 4 years by choice.

My son is completing his junior year. When we were the for orientation, they guaranteed he'd have 4 years of housing. Now he's on the waiting list which means you better find off campus housing. His roommate for the last 2.5 years still has housing, but they want to room together, so they both have to go off campus. Neither wanted to start over with new people. We didn't know how many kids were affected, so we instantly started calling around. The Oaks (Storrs Center) had no openings. At that point panic sets in and you feel like you have to take the next available place. We called the new place on 195 and applied there, but it will cost $20K for the year, per person, versus $8K on campus, so UConn has screwed me over to the tune of $12K. If he had his way, my son would stay on campus. Obviously, financially, I'd prefer he be on campus as well. If we had more time they probably could have found something cheaper, but he found out in Jan or Feb and felt we had to scramble. I love my school, but this is a black mark on them in my eye. I've already told them they'll never get another penny from me, in terms of donations. They cost me a lot of money.

2 kids total, and they're each paying that amount, about $1650/mo for 12 months. 2 bed, 2 bath, 1100 sq ft. The place is brand new on 195 heading into campus. I hear it'll have a heated pool and the school will have a bus route to it. It's called The Standard Four Corners.

My daughter has been off campus in a good sized house for the past two years. $3,000 per month total (750 per girl) plus utilities. Problem is most houses are for 4+ people.

Not a palace but the landlord remodeled the kitchen, bought new appliances, and new furniture for common areas just before they moved in. The landlord also has a handyman that is very responsive to any issues. But I agree, most houses are dumps.

Maric is full of it! We received terrible communication from UConn. You also can't tell kids in December that they might not have housing.
We tried the Oaks first and they were already booked for 2025. I heard this week that UConn booked rooms there. So, they're kicking kids off campus and taking up available space. Total BS!
