I'm not a fan of the design/build (or what I like to call the build then design) delivery method. But it is what it is. Typically finishes tends to be done cheaply to makeup for cost overruns at the beginning of the project. Hopefully the Engineer/Architect, the Contractor, and Owner have all been involved on previous design/build project and understand the delivery method and its pitfalls.
 
I write this with no practical experience but does $3M for design services sound high for a project like this?

If memory serves me, the proposed facility will cost $45 million. 6% for design services is reasonable.

I'm thrilled to hear that if they work hard the building may be open by April 1, 2022 - just days before the Frozen Four in Boston the following weekend. The building would probably then sit empty for about 5 months. Then again, it's more likely the schedule will slip by at least 5 months so it's probably a good thing.

Developer built things can work but you either know it will work or won’t fairly quickly to be honest. I’m pleased that UConn moved on fairly quickly once they concluded it wouldn’t work. Often public entities keep trying to work things out even when it is clear they won’t. In the end they waste lots of time or end up with awful deals. Looks like neither will be the case here.

Utilizing the current architectural firm is prudent because it has completed the programming and a conceptual design for the arena and therefore retaining a new design team may be difficult and costly, and there would be a delay in the project completion. The goal of the bridging documents is to make the building as efficient and cost-effective as possible, while providing required program elements, including a minimum of 2,500 seats. If the hockey arena can be awarded to a design-builder by September 1, 2020, the facility may be constructed and open on April 1, 2022.

I was hoping that the new design/build firm would mean a revisiting and improvement upon a pretty tepid concept. The verbiage above seems to indicate that it will not.

Does this mean we are abandoning the build/lease back model?
 
I'd rather they wait an extra 6-12 months and get it right and I would think the conference would as well if they ultimately want UConn playing more games than not on campus.

Ha... the way Connolly was presenting it I figured they were put out on display @ the XL for the UNH game.
 
If we have to trade-off amenities vs seats, dump the amenities, increase seating. Ingalls at Yale has virtually no amenities, and is a great hockey environment. Give me 4,000 bleacher seats vs 2,500 with 500 chairbacks. I'm 72 years old, and live west of the CT river, but would love to drive to Storrs and sit on a bleacher seat among 1,500-2,000 screaming UConn students. The best college hockey is played on campus in the presence of a raucous student body. Must have seats SURROUNDING the entire rink. Put the students behind the opposition goalie for 2 of 3 periods.
 
Make it like goal patrol in soccer. No reason to not play almost every game up there as well. You can leave maybe 1-2 for Hartford but everything else should be on campus. The die hard hockey fans will still show and student attendance will be much better than what we have seen in Hartford
 
"Up to" 3,500 seats. "Up to" 50% chairbacks. "Planned" to commence construction this fall. Show me a spade in the ground before I drink the Kool-Aid.

I gotcha. But let’s hope. Honestly 35000 seems about the right size. Overbuilding for the sake of overbuilding as lots of people do just seems silly to me whether it’s hockey rinks or houses. 3200 in a 3500 seat arena seems like s packed house. The same crowd in a 7500 seat arena seems sparse.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Either some planned in SRO or room to bump the bleachers to get to 4k. Once UConn breaks through and makes some post season noise, this will be a popular sport on campus.

It could be next year assuming good health and no major defections.
