UConn - Creighton post game thread - Big East Champions!

I was gonna say the same thing. Chen got her pocket picked 2-3 times near half court early in the game, just bringing the ball up. Most of their TOs were unforced. Sarah had a pass from KK go through her hands, but I can’t remember ant being entry passes or long passes.
I thought KK really took a step back today. She was out of control too many times. She can be great if she ever learns to play under control. She has to understand the balance between risk and reward.

And Jensen and Maly are fifth year seniors.
Not sure I understand your point as MANY, many teams have a plethora of 5th and even 6th year players (TCU, Ole Miss, Alabama) For what it’s worth, Creighton is the only other Big East school with a HoopGurlz top 100 recruit for next year With 3 of them coming in, so expect them to continue to be good. Now if Flannery can get a 6’4” or 6’5” center to transfer in….

Not a big deal, but more of a curiosity.
Joe Vaszily & Maj Forsberg officiated intense ACC & Big 10 finals yesterday.
Is there any reason why they were flown in & assigned to a Championship game tonight with no rest when so many top refs are available? Is this an indictment on the overall officiating?
This is not unusual for Maj Forsberg. She really rolls up the frequent flyer miles during conference tourney time. I mentioned this in a post a year or two ago when she was alternating between officiating Big East and ACC tourney games each day. I’ve heard it said that the soccer referee is the fittest person on the field. This could also be said about certain basketball refs. Eyesight excluded

Certainly evidence of fatigue - unusual turnovers from KK and Kaitlyn. I hope some rest will get that corrected. Certainly can't fault the defense and special praise for Azzi and Ash in that respect. I am concerned about Ice and Ash getting their confidence back on offense as we will need them to take on some of the load in the tournament. We needed it all from Paige, Sarah and Azzi tonight against a scrappy and talented, but undersized Creighton team. We will have no such height advantage going forward.
Don't forget for the NCAA, we are getting back a tremendous rebounder, who plays 2" taller than she is

Moment that I will not forget: Third quarter, Paige's rocket assist pass to Azzi for a 3-pointer.

Joe is terrible, absolutely terrible.

Had a heart stopping moment when Sarah slightly turned her ankle under the basket but she seemed as though it did not affect her at all. It was late in the game when she was jostled from behind and went to the ground. A (somewhat dubious) foul was called on the Creighton player. wow! What a player we have with Sarah Strong! She is really something special!

My point is that I was pointing out how experienced Creighton's two leading (season) scorers are, which was the point of the post I was replying to (Creighton's experience).

I think some of the sloppy play on both sides can be attributed to 3 games in three days. It is not so much physically but mentally it takes its toll.

Both teams were out of gas in the fourth quarter. I kept praying for no injuries.

UConn gives most teams fits defensively but they have Creighton’s number. The Huskies just crank up the ball pressure against a well coached team.

UConn has mastered the tap out on live balls. I don’t recall a team doing it as much as UConn does.

The screen set by Brady on Morgensen was not a foul in my opinion.

The upcoming break is needed. Hopefully, the committee comes to their senses and gives UConn the number 1 seed they deserve.

Paige will get the MOP but a case could be made that she should share it with Sarah.

As much as I love watching the team play, three days in a row of John Fanta is plenty.
Thanks for the comment about three games in three days... it helps to
explain all those UCONN turnovers, etc. I agree about that foul on
ICE... it went bad for MOLLY M. when MOLLY RAN INTO "THAT BLOCK (screen)
OF ICE! " It was a funny game with fouls called and not called.

Creighton is a very experienced team. Seven seniors, 2 juniors, and 2 freshmen. Most of them have been playing together for years

I noticed that Coach Flanery already has 5 quality freshman coming in for
next year. It might take time to rebuild, but they still lack a BIG "BIG".

I like this one. I have said it a few times. Minnesota produced a ton of college basketball talent the last 5 years.

Lauren Jensen (post-game presser remarks): Lauren is one tough cookie and she
makes those long threes and incredible drives to the basket. A product of
Lakeville H.S.... Lakeville, Minnesota! Good Luck to Creighton in the NCAAs!

I might have missed it, but did John Fanta again mention that Geno has given Azzi until tomorrow to decide on her future?:rolleyes:
So I'm not the only one throwing things at the tv for the 3rd night?
It was said previously that he needed an answer after the big east tournament.
Geno said that ideally he'd want to know after the BET.
I know that but I doubt that it will be made public...it's solely for planning for next season.
And I only posted it because he made it a point to talk about in the previous two games.
I agree that if Azzi has made her decision, or will do so this week, it probably won't be made public until after the NCAAT as to not cause a media circus around that, versus the actual games to be played. UConn has been very quiet as to transfer visits in the past.

And this is where I get frustrated with announcers that are not as tuned into UConn as I'd like. Yes, sometimes Meghan can be obvious and repetitive, and Rebecca can be too much of an anti-homer, but at least they know the team and do their homework. Details matter.

Bascoe was out of control. She knocked down two of our players, not to mention she was the one who rolled over Paiges leg the first time they played.

Our defense was a lethal weapon.

Creighton is a very experienced team with elite shooters. To hold most of them to below 15 is a statement.

They’re gonna be a tough team for anyone who doesn’t play them often to figure out in the tournament.

Fanta made multiple mistakes with that comment. Geno's comments I believe were more along the line of he would like to know soon after the Big East tournament. That doesn't mean he "will" know. It is Azzi's decision that she can make whenever she wants, including after the season ends. She is aware of Geno's desire for an earlier decision, but if you don't know you don't know.

Neither Azzi or Geno has said there will be a decision right after the Big East Tournament. Maybe there will be a decision then, but Fanta jumped the gun by extrapolating Geno's comments to say we will know after the tournament.

I think for players like Azzi or Paige in this program, you could argue that how the NCAA Tournament plays out could be a big factor in their decision. Getting close, but not winning a championship could be a significant reason to decide to return, and if the decision is a close one, waiting for that final buzzer to sound might be appropriate.

Also as Centerstream points out, a decision even if made, doesn't have to be public. In fact there may be good reasons not to do so. It can be a distraction during the most important part of the season. Personally my view would be if Azzi decides she is returning she could probably announce it, but if she decides to leave it is probably better to keep it in house until the season ends.

Even if Azzi does announce in a day or two, Fanta's comment was very inappropriate unless he was told by Azzi or Geno that would be the case, and Geno's more general comment didn't do that.

Great win but offense sputtered after first quarter. No runs. KK and Chen had 10 TOs. Many uncontested. Guards have to be more disciplined with the handle and with their passes. Paige was her classic self. Fudd was great, her shot is back, and Strong was smooth, smart and consistent. It seems that she just glides down the court. Comes out of nowhere to steal a pass, or a dribble or bat a pass away. Great rebounder, great scorer. A freshman this good is phenominal!

Not sure why Geno pulled Jana so early - she was having a game. Only played 10 minutes. Put KK in in her place and she had two turnovers in less than a minute which lead to 4 points for Creighton. Can't do that against the better teams. She ended ended up with 5 as did Chen. 17 for the team. I know a 20 point win but that's not going to cut it

NO foul On Brady !!!

you can't say fatigue for KK and Chen. They don't play 40 minutes, or anywhere near it. They get their breaks during the games. Paige and Sarah, not so much.

Though I agree that Sarah’s defense is terrific, I’m not ready to say she is better defensively than Mo Jeff; not yet, anyway.
The fact that this big 6'2" phenom is out there pressuring the ball-handler on the perimeter (where she makes many of her steals), yet is still able to get back in position for a rebound . . .
