Men UConn Baseball 2023

Actually, David Smith clocks in at No. 96, but that is still pretty nice. Still, it is also good to see that D1Baseball.com takes into account fall work outs. Also interesting is that David Smith was eligible for the draft last summer, but wasn't taken.

They caught it too…

Freshman Tom Ellisen was redshirted by UConn last season. Still, there were times during the game broadcasts last season that Chris Jones would talk about Ellisen, saying that the coaching staff was very high on Ellisen's ability and that Ellisen could very well be a substantial contributor to the UConn pitching staff in future seasons.

In the games and the scrimmage that I went to this fall in Storrs, Freeberger was consistently hitting third in the batting order. I would think that pretty much tells you what the coaching staff thinks of his offensive ability. The other interesting aspect to his game is that Freeberger can play multiple positions on the field, as well as pitch. From the way he was used in the fall, it would seem he will likely be penciled in at 3B. But since 3B may be the spot where UConn has the most depth on the team (Luke Broadhurst and Ryan Daniels can also play there), it is always possible that Freeberger could find himself playing elsewhere on the defensive side of things.

Redshirt freshman infielder Jack Petersen is no longer listed on the online UConn baseball roster located on the UConn athletics website. UConn baseball now has 42 players listed on the roster, including Chris Brown, who recently appeared on the D1Baseball.com Transfer Tracker for 2023.

Andrew Sears, a Junior LLP who transferred from Division 3 Rhode Island College to UConn. It has also been reported that Sears will play for the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod League this coming summer, so he has taken a step up in the summer collegiate baseball leagues as well. Sears made a good impression on the UConn coaching staff during the fall as well, and it looks like at this point that he is likely to be a part of the UConn weekend starting pitching rotation at the beginning of the season.

Wow, a nice honor that I wasn't expecting, but it is still a great thing to have happen. Congrats to Dave Smith and the Huskies for this preseason recognition.
Congrads DM! Well deserved and a Captain !

Ben Huber and Korey Morton Pre-Season All Big East Team. Ian Cooke Pre-Season Pitcher of the Year.

So David Smith is a preseason All American but not on any Big East pre season team?

A nice pre Christmas present, so to speak, releasing this stuff.

No surprise that Huber and Morton made the Big East Pre-Season Team. Cooke showed plenty of potential last season as well, so no big surprise that he gets mentioned as well.

As for David Smith, it does seem odd that he got named as a second team All American, but not to the Big East Pre-Season Team. I'm thinking that a lot of the Big East Pre-Season Team was probably based on performance during the last spring season. As for the All American ranking, it has been mentioned that David Smith did very well during the fall ball season, and the All American ranking might be partly taking in how players did in the fall, while the Big East is not. That is the only real explanation I can think of.

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has UConn ranked @ #31 in their pre-season poll:
