The last few days UConn baseball has scrimmaged in the afternoon, in the evening, and in the morning. Coach Penders said in an interview the other day that he wanted the players to get used to playing at all times of the day, so it certainly looks like they are doing that. The new baseball facility is certainly helping in that goal.

Good stuff talking about Ben Casparius who started this morning. Sounds like he is still on target as the Friday starter, plus there were good positive words on California JUCO transfer Devin Kirby (compared him to Kersten and Krauth in terms of him throwing strikes and going for a quick inning) and Justin Willis suggesting that they could be good contributors out of the bullpen.

Alternate access link here<

>>When Penders walked into UConn’s new, long-awaited baseball stadium Saturday morning for an intra-squad scrimmage, there were scouts from 20 MLB organizations spread out in the grandstand. The playing of games on the stunning artificial surface, with fans filling the 1,500 seats and spread out on lawn chairs on the berms beyond the bleachers is still several months away, and with COVID-19, there is no date certain. But the Huskies have a collection of talent that will draw attention.<<

Good stuff. Here's another notable paragraph from the article that speaks to the importance of the new ballpark.

>This week, when assistant coach Chris Podeszwa wanted more energy in a workout that followed a morning downpour, he told the players, “It rained three inches this morning. You’re the first team the history of the program that can practice on a baseball field on a day that it rained. We’re not going to take this for granted.”<

Seems like the guy in the last picture is Kenny Campbell. He appears to be a transfer from Layfette. Great to see our guys getting work in!!

I recall Kenny Campbell got a passing mention in one of the Chris Jones scrimmage interviews that he did with the players. His twitter account does list both Lafayette and UConn.

I understand that Kenny Campbell is indeed a transfer to UConn from Lafayette College. He pitched there in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, he did not see any game action in 2019 and 2020. In fact, in 2020 he was a Student Assistant Coach for the team, so that to me suggests he had some sort of injury.

I have heard that UConn baseball has a couple more players with the team during fall ball who have not been previously mentioned in these baseball threads. They are Ryan Hyde (Berlin High School class of 2019) who was a freshman at UConn last year but was not part of the UConn baseball team, and Noah Yokoi, who was at Avery Point the last two years. Both these players are catchers. With the expanded rosters where Seniors from last season (Chris Winkel, David Langer, Kenny Haus, and Randy Polonia) don’t take up space on the 35 man spring roster, I am guessing one of these guys might have a chance to stick on the spring roster as a third string catcher if they have a good showing in fall ball.

Dibble very impressed w/ Elliot Ballpark: Penders talks up Casparian, Devenney and Hague among others. Some future schedule hints/strategy discussion as well.
