Redshirted as a freshman?

It was reported earlier in this thread that Nepiarsky was graduating UConn after this semester. So I guessed he might attend SCSU as a graduate student, as he has another year of eligibility due to his redshirt freshman year. Of course, I might be wrong.

LHP Mason Feole earned Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American and American Athletic Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors last spring for @UConnBSB. Feole struck out 24 in 23.2 innings for @WarehamGatemen and is expected to return to the Gatemen in 2018.

. @UConnBSB infielder Anthony Prato batted .304, had 33 RBI, scored 50 runs, and swiped 15 bases for the Huskies last spring. Prato played 2 games for @WhitecapsCCBL and appeared in 7 games for @BourneBraves last summer. He is expected to return to Bourne this year.

RHP Joseph Simeone from @GDCrusaders, now a freshman at @UConnBSB, will pitch for @YD_RedSox this summer. Simeone was a key member of Groton-Dunstable's undefeated state championship team in 2016 and pitched in the @FuturesLeague for Wachusett last summer.

Would someone mind explaining how there are more than 35 on the fall roster? Outside of some red shirts, are those walk-ons or are kids offered a roster, then get cut by spring?

The NCAA has a roster limit of 35 for the spring baseball season. You can have more than 35 in the fall, but then players get cut for the spring season.

Thanks. Are those cuts for walk-ons, or do kids get an offer when in HS, and then get cut?

Only 11.7 scollies in baseball, most kids who get cut aren’t on scholarship.

While their are only 11.7 scholarships in baseball, up to 27 players can get scholarship money. I believe the NCAA mandates that the cuts come from players not on scholarship.

Thanks for your help guys. My son is hoping to pitch in college and I didn't realize you can get cut if not on scholarship. Something for us to keep an eye out for if he's lucky enough to get an offer.
