With Davey, Darras, along with freshman Olmstead and Garabedean the long range future of the OF seems promising, to say the least.

The long range future of the outfield is indeed promising. But my comments are more geared for the immediate future, the beginning of the season. None of the returning outfielders had a good years at the bat, although it sounds like from the interview that Sundberg is much improved. Right now it sounds like the corner jobs are going to be manned by Yavarone and Testani, at least until someone produces enough at the bat to take their jobs away. The good news is there are a lot more promising options to go to this season then there were before if Sundberg, Testani, and Yavarone don't hit enough.

Strong work indeed from Chris Jones. There's lots of great tidbits to be gleaned from the interviews with the coaches. Overall, it's a great review of where each player stands on the team at this point. I'm really looking forward to the beginning of the season now.

From what Penders was saying, it could be some time before he settles onto something resembling a set lineup. While there is no position player who is as good as Mazzilli was, there is much more quality depth on this team then there has been in recent seasons.

American Athletic Conference Baseball Season Preview
http://theamerican.org/news/2014/2/13/BASE_0213145810.aspx

Previously picked to finish 3rd in coaches Pre-Season Poll (behind Ville and UCF):

UConn Huskies
Head Coach: Jim Penders
2013 Record: 35-28
The Huskies will look to return to the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons. UConn returns two weekend starters in Anthony Marzi and Jordan Tabakman. Offensively Bobby Melley, Vinny Sienna, and Tom Verdi will compose three fourths of the returning infield, with the exception being departed Second Team All-American L.J. Mazzilli.

Came inside from my second round of shoveling increasingly rain heavy snow from the various pathways to the house to find tweets that Penders and company have landed in Florida. Let the season commence!

When will the starting lineup for opening game be announced? Just before game? Was hoping to see something official by now.

Cripes... Last year AAron Hill was facing East Lyme pitching - this weekend Ohio State and Auburn staffs. ;)

Well, Penders has been saying great things about Hill, about how he is the shortstop of the future, and how he was going to get a lot of playing time this season. Of course, I'm guessing that the original plan wasn't to have to play Hill all three games of the first weekend.

Is the game on WHUS today? No reference to it in the "On the Air" section of the sports page.

UConnhuskies.com says yes. Is there an app that gets WHUS? I haven't been able to tune into 91.7 if I'm any further than Tolland.

Daniello has the flexibility to help UConn baseball

>>The veteran Huskies boss will have no problem finding a place to play Daniello during the upcoming UConn season, which begins Friday with a game against Ohio State University in Port Charlotte, Fla. "He can play third, second or shortstop. He's capable of playing them all and I'm definitely comfortable with him playing all three," said Penders during UConn's annual baseball media day at the Star Hill Family Athletic Center, the program's indoor practice facility located approximately 10 miles off campus. "And he can play outfield if we need him to, as well."<<

>>While the Huskies open against Ohio State, Daniello won't see action until Saturday, the second game of the season against Indiana State. He's sitting out the opener for disciplinary reasons. "I overslept and missed a team study hall," Daniello admitted rather sheepishly. "It's my own fault. I just overslept. Coach said don't let it happen again and I'm not going to." After missing the last seven games of last season, having to sit out one more game will prove to be that much more painful for Daniello.<<

So it sounds like we are without Verdi and Daniello for opening game already. Guess we will see Hill and not sure what other Freshman right out of the gate. Also, is radio the only coverage of this game? Any Gametracker or TV?

I only see radio (even checked OSU site). My guess is Chris Jones twitter (@JonesCcj) will be active as well?

The myUConn app (android and iOS) has a live stream from WHUS. I think it's worth having on my phone to ensure that no matter what, I'll have a way to at least hear games.

Got me... Penders change his mind because of Verdi injury?
