UConn athletics Mount Rushmore (limit of one athlete per sport)

Orlovsky is known for taking a 15 yard drop so he could run out of bounds another 15 yards for a safety and for being an ESPN talking head. He's not exactly known for his play.
Ha. True. But I'm saying he's facially recognizable. Mt Rushmore relies on facial recognition. Otherwise, my uncle Emil could be up there and nobody would blink.

Dan Orlovsky
Ray Allen
Stewie
Joe Morrone Jr (men's soccer - Hermann Trophy Winner in 1980, US Olympic Team 1980, North American Soccer League Rookie of the Year 1981)

A couple from other sports:

Sara Whalen had great career at UConn and was on the1999 World Cup team. A reserve but still.

Elena Bolles was national player of the year for the 2013 field hockey team that won a national title. First since 1985 and started a run of three titles in five years.

Chris Gbandi was Hermann Trophy winner on National title team. Pro career didn’t pan out.

The UConn polo teams won a bunch of titles. One of those horses was probably legit.
Oh wait - my bad. Didn't read the criteria close enough. Tracey Fuchs should be the nomination for field hockey. A ton of USA Field Hockey and coaching accolades. Part of '85 title team. From her bio:

Arguably the greatest player in the history of USA field hockey, Fuchs is a two-time USA Field Hockey Athlete of the Year (1990, '93), a member of two Olympic and four World Cup teams. She has participated in more international matches (268) than any other player in U.S. field hockey history. Fuchs gained extensive leadership experience as a 17-year member of the national team, serving as team captain for 14 seasons. She racked up 69 international goals and in 1994 was named to the President's XI, a world all-star team chosen to play the Australian Hockeyroos in honor of the International Hockey Federation's 75th Anniversary.

How many UConn QB's (not guys who started at UConn and transferred elsewhere) were NFL QBs and stuck around? That gets Dan my vote.

Soccer - Andre or Joe Morrone Jr (men) Sara W (women)
Baseball - Springer or Walt Dropo
Football - Danny O or Vinny C or John Dorsey
Basketball - Ray Allen and Diana T
Field Hockey - Charlotte Veitner
Hockey - Todd Krieger

Not a criticism, just a commentary:

If you're including Clements as a possibility (absolutely warranted) Torkleson also should be mentioned. Prior to Orlovsky, he had the longest NFL career (by quite a bit) of any UConn player.

Also, while he still has a long career ahead of him, Tage Thompson may have already exceeded Krygier as an NHL player.

Accomplishments while at UCONN should be the only factor. Whether or not an athlete was good in the pros is irrelevant.
If that is the criteria then:

Kemba jumps to the top for Men's Hoop
Danny O for Football
Breanna Stewart for Lady's Hoop
I guess Spring still for Baseball

After reading the first 20 comments on that Reddit thread, I don't even want to attempt this exercise. Those former PAC-10 schools mop up here, along with UNC.
Heck Fresno State might be the best of them all - Paul George, Aaron Judge, Davante Adams, and Laura Berg

Baseball Springer
Basketball Ray
Football Tyvon Branch
Hockey. Thompson

Basketball. (Taurasi Bird Moore Stewie)
FHockey Fuchs
Soccer Whalen

UNC can claim the GOAT in at least three separate sports.

Jordan, Lawrence Taylor (defensive GOAT), MIA Hamm

I’d say that’s pretty damn good.

Dan Orlovsky, still visible today

Springer, all-star and champion

Ray Ray, first ballot HOF

Diana T. Three titles, Olympic gold, WNBA champions and TV personality. Stewie is awesome. But D is the total package

Non-UConn grad / non-CT resident list:

Ray Allen
Diana Taurasi
Tage Thompson
George Springer

Exactly what I thought. I'd put Tristen Newton on there before I'd put Ray. Two titles, two MOPs?
1 MOP. People seem to forget Adama was MOP in 2023. Someone made that mistake during one of th broadcasts.

If counting UConn and pro career:
Ray Allen
Sue Bird
Tage Thompson
George Springer

If just UConn
Kemba Walker or Shabazz
Breanna Stewart
Dan Orlovsky
?? Dan Donigan?

If it's just sports in general?
Calhoun
Geno
Morrone
Len Tsantiris or Baylock

I'm totally amazed and VERY disappointed over the fact that Maya Moore wasn't mentioned, at least amongst the first ten or fifteen or more replies. If she isn't the best women's basketball player ever, she's !B ... there's never been anyone who came in instantly and played from her first game like she was an All-American senior ... A phenomenal teammate totally unselfish and then went to the NBA where she won a number of championships ... She then left long before her talents waned to help turn over a wrongly accused friend's conviction ... that man ended up being her husband ... If there's a Mount Rushmore of women's basketball,Maya deserves to be there ... my favorite women's Huskie though there's so many incredible women to choose from

He is “known” for his contribution at UCONN, not to mention home grown.

yeah he has the blooper in the end zone but had a pretty good NFL career, he stuck a good amount in the Not For Long league

He owns many of the UConn offensive records too.

Assuming this is limited to athletes, not coaches.
Football: Dan Orlovsky-brought us recognition that most thought would take 10 years.
Basketball: Khalid el Amin. We don’t win title #1 without his cocky yet intense personality. Got us over the almost but not quite good enough hump. After him UConn’s image changed.
Womens basketball: Rebecca Lobo. Another case of someone who led the program to its first title and set the standard for those who came after.
Hockey: Hudson Schandor. Didn’t get us to the Frozen Four but did to the NCAAs for the first time. Another guy who set a standard that future players will need to live up to.
Soccer: Joe Morrone, Jr. Won the soccer equivalent of the Heisman, the Hermann Trophy. All-American, Selected for the 1980 Olympics, scored the winning goal to qualify Team USA for the Games (USA ultimately boycotted Moscow games over Soviet invasion of Afghanistan).
Baseball: Charles Nagy. Great college career. Went on to be a 3 time All Star and is in the Cleveland Guardians Hall of Fame.
