UConn as a "brand" not quite there

One interesting brand item to look at is how many followers our socials have. For instance, Duke has 1.7mm followers on IG - in another world from a brand perspective. I was at a train station in LI yesterday and saw a random guy (def not a Duke grad) wearing a Duke hoody and hat.

Uconn has 193K. To show you how far ahead Duke is, UNC has 583K (Jordan), UK has 566K and Kansas 309K.

Uconn women are at 586K.

Ohio States FB team has 1.4mm. Duke hoops is simply a brand powerhouse.

I also disliked the move to the "new" logo. It changed a very distinctive Husky to a pretty generic one.

Suzy Herbst is the one who ultimately responsible for it. At a UConn function I asked her if she would like it if someone had changed the Duke (her alma mater) logo to a pink devil. She replied emphatically "No." To which I replied, "That's what you did to us."

Edsall wanted to stop using UConn. He put Connecticut on everything. He had no concept of the power "UConn" could bring to the brand.

With leaders like this it's a wonder we have a brand at all.

Duke, with their IQ, has done a pretty amazing job of creating a "culture" around their brand. Fans/players/athletes/humans love culture. They have a lot going their way - they have Cameron, a historic coach, NBA alumni galore and then all these little rituals they brand the heck out of, like the Cameron Crazies, that baby (as weird as it is), the Brotherhood, etc. They get these generational college talents like Flagg & Zion that just look different.

It doesn't hurt that they have the name of Duke, a cool mascot and are an elite academic institution.

Does make you wonder if there is some opportunity at Uconn, especially with Hurley at the helm, to add some colorful facets to the Uconn experience. Brotherhood = Wolfpack. Gampel Goons. Can't be an obvious copy and has to come from the students. As awesome as he is, not sure GenZ is connecting with a man on an oxygen tank in the rafters going through his U-C-O-N-N.
It must be from all those phones autocorrecting the word “puke.”

The UConn brand is respected around the world, ha

I’m a lifelong UConn fan. My uncle used to listen to UConn on the radio in the 50s and 60s and my mom started watching them in the 70s and on. I’ve lived and breathed this since I was 6 years old because when UConn was on, the entire family had to watch.

Yet, I don’t have social media. I don’t use it. I watch the games, every single post game presser on YouTube. I search UConn on Google pretty much every day.

I may be an outlier but I may not be. When I go to games I see a very diverse crowd. All ages, but especially older fans. I’m sure a huge part of our fan base could care less about our social media and more about the games. Which is what really matters anyways. I mean, we are posting on a forum online with 10,000 plus fans, using an antiquated form of communication. Kind of ironic isn’t it?

With the women’s fan base I can’t help but think that has to do with players like Bueckers or just the national stage they have always been on. I think for mens to reach that level we need consistent national exposure, which we are getting now, and bidirectional attention from NBA fans. Getting more NBA ready players will have those fans looking at who might be going to their team.

Back in the summer of 1984 I was playing hoops at an outdoor court in Seal Beach CA. I was the only white guy. I did my thing and afterward we were sitting around bullshitting and I get asked what school I went to.
“UConn” I replied.
One of the guys looked at me and said, a bit incredulously, “Alaska?”
True story.
