UConn and 2022 NFL Draft

Omar Fortt continues to get great feedback at TEST Football Academy where he's been training for his UConn pro-day March 23rd.

Tonight is the Shrine East West Game 8pm EST on NFL Network. Ryan Van Demark gets his chance to shine after receiving lots of kudos during the drills and practices for the scouts.

Travis Jones gets his chance at the Senior Bowl on Saturday at 2:30pm EST on NFL Network. During televised practice today the announcers were complimentary about Jones. The place is packed with scouts and GM's. At one point, after a D Lineman teammate of Jones was compared to Richard Seymour the announcer said Travis reminds him of a leaner version of Vince Wilfork. He's clearly making an impact. The Steelers appear especially interested as described by their on site scouting folks:
– Coach Tomlin looking closely at Travis Jones for much of the position work to start practice.
– Tomlins eyes are following defensive lineman Travis Jones and edge rusher Myjai Sanders for much of the opening period with the national team defensive line.
– OL Zion Johnson with the great one-on-one rep versus Travis Jones anchoring in and stalling his rush
– Travis Jones wins very next rep against Johnson with swim move over the shoulder
-Travis Jones with the long arm on Michigan’s Andrew Stueber, walking him back into the backfield.

Go Huskies!

Go Huskies!
Pittsburgh or Tennessee would probably be the most ideal spots for Travis to go to. He would shine in those systems. Next I would say Washington would a great spot too.

30. Kansas City Chiefs: DT Travis Jones, UConn

"Travis Jones, a defensive lineman capable of playing 0 through 3-tech in the league. The New Haven native has excellent play strength and above-average movement skills, regularly dominating one-on-one situations. When he lands his punches early, the Huskies’ star throws blockers around while flashing counters, hand fighting and a speed profile."

Note from the Senior Bowl: "To say Jones had a fantastic Senior Bowl would be an understatement. He was one of the best interior defensive linemen on the field, showing great movement skills for his size and phenomenal power."

53. Las Vegas Raiders

Travis Jones, IDL, UConn

Jones was unblockable during practice at the Senior Bowl and was one of the prospects who boosted his draft stock most. At 6-foot-4, 326 pounds, he's a stout and powerful interior defender. He's also nimble for his size as a pass-rusher. He could rise even higher. With new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham on board -- and a pending in-house free-agent list that includes Johnathan Hankins, Quinton Jeffersonand Solomon Thomas -- the Raiders will be searching for a true nose tackle. Jones is a perfect fit.

Travis could get playing time right away on the Raiders next year and they're a still a playoff team. So that's a nice landing spot.

Boy is about to get paid if he gets drafted by KC. Spags will have him playing like Aaron Donald by the end of the season.

“In the latest 2022 NFL Mock Draft, Zack Patraw of the NFL Draft Bible did an All-Senior Bowl mock draft, where Travis Jones was selected in the first round.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers need to find a gap-filling run stuffer is apparent. Aside from Jerry Tillery, the team is barren in the middle of their defense. And Tillery is not an elite run defender. The Chargers could easily try and grab one of the Georgia Bulldogs interior linemen, Jordan Davis or Devonte Wyatt, in the first round, but it would best suit them to wait and grab Jones. This opens the door to possibly drafting a stud wide receiver like Drake London in the first round to replace the possible departure of Mike Williams. In reality, Williams has been very inconsistent.

Las Vegas Raiders

Interior defensive line is a huge hole in the Raiders defense. The re-emergence of Denzel Perryman made this obvious by the spike in his tackle numbers. Running backs were able to exploit the interior of the defense and do it at will. The Raiders are another team that is in dire need of wide receiver help. There are some incredibly talented wide receivers that are in first-round consideration. If the Raiders were smart, they would take the best available wideout in the first round and shoot for Jones in the next round or two.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers traded away their first-round pick to land Trey Lance in the 2021 draft. They are also a team that is lacking in the interior of the defense. Javon Kinlaw will be coming off an injury and the rest of the group is subpar unless Arik Armstead is included as an interior lineman. The 49ers do own two second-round choices and a third-round selection. If Jones drops to the third, the 49ers could grab some secondary help in the first two rounds and still come out with an impact interior lineman.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys have not had an interior pass-rushing presence in what seems like an eternity. Although grabbing one in the first round seems like an excellent idea, they have glaring holes that they need to fill on defense, mainly in the secondary. After Jones blew up at Senior Bowl, the Cowboys should feel very comfortable about landing corner help in the first two rounds while potentially landing Jones in the third.

In summary, Jones made a great name for himself at the Senior Bowl. His potential impact on the draft could affect the decision-making by some general managers. It may also force others to alter their plans and miss on their guy. Finding an interior defensive lineman with Jones’s potential in the second or third round is rare, but here we are. Jones did not have the spotlight as much as some guys from the SEC, though he has proven he deserves to be in the same tier. It will be very interesting to see how Jones’s presence will have an impact on NFL draft boards.”

Honestly the everywhere but the Cowboys would be a great landing spot. Cowboys basically are a out score em kinda team under McCarthy so Travis will be wasted there.

I dislike everything about the cowboys, but being bookended by guys like Parsons and Lawrence would not be the worst thing for big trav

Dan Quinn turned an undersized 3rd round rookie into one of the better interior linemen in the league this year on the Cowboys, which is quite unusual. One would think it would be a great place for Jones, especially with the outside supporting cast.

Better to have one team love you than 10 teams like you.

I can see Ryan getting drafted late kin the draft due to his size and teams always looking for tackles with long arms and experience.

If he is going to be a 7th round pick he might be better off picking a team to go too when he can stick or at least go on the practice squad

NFL mock drafts revised after Senior Bowl with Travis projected as a 1st or 2nd rounder:

1st rd (25th) - DraftCountdown
1st rd (30th) - SI (Patraw)
2nd rd (45th) - TheDraftNetwork
2nd rd (53rd) - ESPN (Reid)
2nd rd (53rd) - DraftTek
2nd rd (56th) - DraftWire (USA Today)

Clemson really showed that Travis could play with anyone. Clemson's Oline is considered one of the best in the game and he was getting lots of attention. He's sneaky powerful and quick. I think he's really going to be the next Aaron Donald at the next level.

I think the world of Travus and fully believe that he will be a quality NFL defensive lineman but Aaron Donald is a far different type of player than Travis could ever be. I think it would be far more fair to project him as another Fletcher Cox or simar oversized DT who swallows up the run and can push the line a bit in passing situations.

-> Rank 39 Travis Jones
Connecticut · DT · Senior
NR

Jones is a big, powerful defensive tackle with surprising quickness. Against the pass, he can generate immediate knockback and collapse the pocket. He uses a long inside-arm maneuver to walk centers right back to the quarterback. He flashes an explosive club move, but he needs to continue to add to his arsenal of pass-rush techniques. Against the run, he is stout versus both single and double teams. He can sink his weight and resist pressure on angle blocks. His effort is solid. Overall, Jones took his game to another level at the Reese's Senior Bowl and he has the ability to play on the other side of the line of scrimmage against both the run and pass. <-

-> 14. Travis Jones, Connecticut, defensive tackle:The 6-foot-4 1/2, 326-pound powerhouse (7.5 TFLs, 4.5 sacks) has been the best thing UConn football has had going in a long time. He was once around 360 pounds but really worked on his body and got down to 13 percent body fat. He should get in the mid-30s on the bench and close to 30 inches on his vertical jump. Don’t be shocked if he cracks 4.60 on his shuttle time. He did a 4.57 last offseason. <-

He might be the fastest interior Dlinemen at the combine this year.

Omar Fortt and Ryan Van Demark are both training hard at TEST in preparation for Pro Day. It’s an interesting and challenging regimen and it all culminates on one morning in March. Pro Day for UConn starts at 8am on Wednesday March 23rd.
