UConn AD stares down future in American

He's done with it because it's not the AD's job.

Well if it's not the AD's job why did he say he was 'done'? If it wasn't his job why was he involved to the point he made a public declaration he was stopping?

Honestly, HFD for all his craziness, I tend to agree with him more than the everything is fine crowd. Maybe that makes me crazy or a "" like some guys have referred to me on here, but everything out of Storrs just makes me so angry later.

I've felt like they don't care for a long time, and Warde just comes out and confirms that.

I'm pretty beside myself with everything UConn except for Kevin Ollie.

It's no wonder we ended up where we did with these people in charge.

I've said it here before but Warde has no UConn connection, does anyone think he really gives a where we play so as long he cashes his $500K a year?

He doesn't care and Herbst is so clueless about athletics it's painful. She's a Duke grad who will be out of Storrs at the first chance she gets.

I can't prove it but I fear you are correct.

Athletics aren't part of Herbst's vision for the school and Warde is just an extension who runs a program that values APR over wins and losses.

I can't prove it but I hope you're wrong.

Are we going to harp on ward because he sees reality. Sorry but the last lifeboat for a long time just left with Louisville and big ten is a pipe dream.

What ward needs to do is get is winning and get fans in the seats so when the next round of conference change occurs we are ready

I've never worked in a FBS athletic department but aside from hiring coaches how do athletic directors win games?

Mostly recruiting related :
  • Facility upgrades to entice highly sought after recruits
  • Better marketing of athletic teams (interesting match-ups, alt. uniforms, etc.) which help coaches use as part of their recruiting pitch.
Not sure how well Warde would measure on those metrics though.

I've been saying this for a while now. My impression, and it is a strong one, is that Susan neither understands nor really cares about athletics beyond the point where she doesn't want to be embarrassed by them like she was by the APR thing. Manuel was brought in because under his watch Buffalo went from a program with multiple APR violations to one which got awards for academic performance. Nothing more. When you look at UConn's previous ADs this guy just doesn't measure up even to Hathaway. I think the way they handled Wolf was just another example of the lack of committment. While I personally was happy to see UConn finally crack down on someone, if anyone thinks that would have happened under Calhoun, Hathaway or Lew Perkins and any of the previous presidents of the past 20 years, please contact me about an offer on the Arrigoni Bridge. I don't necessarily think Herbst is anti-athletics, but she is more "Just don't bother me" in her outlook. And that means if we're going to get anywhere we need a Director in the Lew Perkins mold. While Manuel might fit in Lew's old suits, that is about where the comparison ends. He'll be thrilled if UConn gets the APR award rather than any national championships. She will be thrilled if nobody ever mentions athletics to her again.

i'm just curious but why is USF never mentioned in realignment? Located in Tampa, on campus stadium, pretty good enrollment size...

Well since this is the Internet where we all spout wild-ass guesses about things I'll throw my 2 cents.

I think that SH and WM do care about athletics, and it is a priority (just not at the expense of APR). For SH, it's one of many priorities, for WM it's his main priority. Nothing too earth shattering there. I just don't subscribe our current place in the world to lack of caring.

From the SH perspective, I think she is smart enough to recognize that there is a direct correlation between Athletics and more money for UConn - something she has stated is a very big priority for her. People who have pride in their school are people that may donate back to that school, and for UConn, athletic success is a big part of that pride.

For WM, I don't think you need to be an alum to care about wanting to be the best. He played at Michigan, worked there- he knows what big time looks like, and that is the goal.

How to get there is the hard part.

Obviously both stepped in and were working with a real hand. Some things were beyond their control (and we debate endlessly where that line is).

What I think we, collectively as UConn have been guilty of, is hubris. I think it's been easy to sit back and say "we are great and our value is obvious" when that is not the case to those deciding our fate. If it was, we'd be in a better place by now. We are now in a place where pumping up our virtues publicly and constantly making googly eyes to the B1G or ACC stabs our new home in the back, but saying how much we like the AAC feels like giving up. It makes what SH and WM have to do that much harder (and keeps us all in the dark), because it has to be done privately now. And... Not having that visibility can be interpreted as not caring.

At least... I hope it's not lack of caring.

I believe your correct. Nothing should be said publically.
Susan's objectives to increase the acedemics should be a priority.
Especially the endowment which is mediocre for the AAC never mind the B1G. Athletic success certainly will help in that regard.
I'm sure she understands that.
The athletic programs regardless of conference have to be viewed as a long term investment to achieve that goal.
Stadium exspansion
PR
and above all on field success.
If the team gets to a decent bowl. Underwrite the cost of getting the most fans there as possible
In the past is was viewed as a moneymaker. That's short term thinking. Its an opportunity to showcase your program and should be viewed as such. Perkins for all his vision though like a whore, exploiting Huskie mania to maximize short term financial gain.
Its time for some strategic long term planning.
The most important thing that the UConn leadership have to understand is that UConn is not just a Campus in a remote corner of a small state. It belongs to all the people of the state.
If that might mean playing a BB game in Bridgeport or runinning camps in Norwich. The best chance for long term success is the Nebraska model. Where almost everyone who lived in that state feel a part of their their school. That's probably not achievable but that should br our model none the less.

They moved an NFL stadium onto USF's campus?

The problem is, UConn isn't nearly as valuable as everyone wants to think they are. It sucks, but its the reality.

We are in a bit of a weird spot. I believe we are worth well more as an athletic program than some silly $2 mil number or whatever it is in the AAC. But we also aren't in a spot where our addition will add $20 mil to a TV contract. So we have to be very diligent to show all the other ways that we can add value. And we have to continually better ourselves (winning, AAU, research, endowment) to increase our value.

Their are those on this board that overvalue our position. That is a dangereous trait. Undervaluing your worth is just as bad.
The key lies in knowing your strenghts and weaknesses.
Accentuating your strenghts and working to elimate your controllable weaknesses.
The Key question does the state have the market to support a big time conference. I think is yes ie if your Vermont than your wasting your time. Then its a question of realistically appraising the necessary steps to achieve your objective.

zl,
Sadly you're right, but the reason that is true is pretty simple. UConn is a "basketball school" and is perceived to be weak in football. And it can't be compared with other basketball schools like Duke, UNC, or Kansas or Indiana or Kentucky who had the good fortune or luck to have been in conferences which ultimately became power conferences. Indeed, our basketball success and their football struggles subtly works against us, I believe. it isn't that unusual to hear comparisons to Duke or one of those other programs that win basketball titles but barely register on the football field most of the time and I honestly believe that is a perception that has contributed to holding us back in conference re-alignment. There is a commonly held idea that good football schools can become good at basketball but the converse won't happen. Duke, North Carolina, Indiana and Kentucky have done little to change that perception in recent years. heck, Carolina even cheated and still couldn't get over the hump, so maybe it is true.

You can call me psycho, I don't care.

A B1G invite is there for the taking. It's up to us what we want to make of ourselves. We can sit and mope and cry about Tulane. Tulane is still academically superior. Or we can be warriors and support the damn school. This is about the future, not now. The state is doing it's part, we have to do our part. Buy a season ticket for a sport or two or three. UConn families are a reality now, where whole families went to or go to UConn. You have to keep in mind private schools dominated the northeast for so long. That has obviously changed in Connecticut. Forget URI or UMass.

It's entirely up to us. They want to see us attend our games. Us attending our games will make us more enticing to recruits. Stop crying about the football team. If we're on the B1G's radar with what we have, we have no reason to really complain about the football program except for the play-calling.

I've seen enough to say confidently the B1G is monitoring us. Whether we want to go to the B1G or not is up to us. Cannot say it enough. Screw the ACC. We need to secure the future of Connecticut. This is our chance. I intend to be a season ticket holder in some capacity for as long as I can be. I hope the rest decide to do the same. B1G or bust.

Buddy I can support UConn and point out that Tulane sucks. I'm not going to tapings of as schools match wits, I'm going to football and basketball games.

They barely have a radio outlet and played a football game in front 2k people. You can't make up a school that is athletically more worthless than Tulane. Any FBS school randomly drawn from a hat would be a better addition.

You've decided UConn is some legitimate target for the Big 10 based on message board blather - 99% of which happens on this board because the concept of UConn going to the Big 10 exists almost nowhere but here.

LOL. You mean you take random comments from stories and have twisted them into a narrative.

A: if the damn big 10 wanted UConn they wouldn't let them die on the vine in the AAC

B: there is no team number 16. Not a single school exists even if they wanted UConn to get even.

I know there's no easy #16.

Still has been said by people associated with the B1G that UConn is desirable. Yes, I am making up my own story.

Maybe its because these people see how passionate you are about UConn and they don't want to hurt your feelings?

I don't live and die athletics or my alma mater. But do I want better for my community. Only one person talked to me directly and he said, nice school but can't say definite yes, but hey, you never know. Rest are printed media.

If B1G fans have empathy for a visitor, we're certainly not ready tor the B1G.

@Butch,its tough for me to understand how other's don't see it as we do?All the sign's are there!! We're next (UConn) is so obvious to me as even an RU fan!!1 move is all it's gonna take and the B1G ain't gonna let the ACC take the last valuable piece to the NE lockdown!!I can even see Temple as a future ACC type school if they continue upgrading their profile!!That's the best the ACC will do in the NE and Temple's move is impressive and unexpected too me!!

People just need to get used to the idea. We need someone to ask Herbst to talk to our former football player who's the president of Tulane and the AAU. Maybe he can help hurry things up.

Maybe, just maybe she is already talking to him.

Herbst is doing all the right things on that front.. If and when AAU status comes (and I believe it will), UConn will settle quickly into a new conference - either the B1G or the ACC. There is no one left in the NYC market with any gravitas other than UConn. As of now, however, the B1G can't take us and the ACC feels no rush because the B1G can't take us. Conference realignment has been a confounding process that has made UConn faithful bitter and resentful. But we will get taken care of at the end if Manuel pays attention. So let's hope it is the B1G - clearly the best place to be for us (and we won't have to deal with the "favored nation" status for ND).

Well Butch anytime NickyNewark agrees with you, that must mean you are on the right track. Especially when a Rutgers fan can in the same sentence tell you he's a Rutgers fan and refer to UConn as 'we'.

Viva Temple!

Yes. We are most likely next. Unless there is no next. Which is a possibility. That's why everyone is freaking out. There are somewhere between 0 and a small number of seats left at the table. And we are outside peering through the glass. Hoping.
