Can’t wait to see this kid play. Sounds like he will be the next Karaban who just makes the game easier for his teammates, won’t take the game over but won’t cause turnovers.

I hope Alex wants to overlap with him for a year…

I feel like we have too many guys who aren’t “athletic” or quick but Murray and Hurley like them because they can shoot and have “high bb iq.” Not to knock furphy it’s just that every time I see a quote from the coaching staff about a recruit it’s about shooting or intelligence. Not “this guy blows past defenders” or “this guy locks up his man on d” or “he’s a rebounding monster.” Just an observation that we seem to be crowding a lot of the same “type.” And take this with the knowledge that I never coached a team to b2b chips.

Our roster had plenty of great athletes this year, we didn't have any great passers, not a single one.

Liam and Aiden were both below average passers and that really hurt.

The one thing you can’t overlook is physically built a guy is. That is why guys in the NBA who aren’t explosive do well like Luka and the Joker. They know how to use their weight to get where they want on the floor even though they might not even be the fastest or strongest(Though I think Luka is pretty strong too) player on the court. Furphy is built well compared to the other Freshmen. It will be interesting to see who can excel in getting minutes.

I'm hearing Furphy is just like Larry Bird, the only difference is that Bird will ask "Jeet?" if he wants company for dinner, while Furphy will say, "Get your tucker?"

We did? It was pretty typical for us to be the slower/less athletic team at positions 1-4 legit every game. Samson was our only true plus athlete. Hurley even talked about how slow we were during the season.

Ross is a great athlete. Liam is a good enough athlete to be considered a potential lottery pick but he stunk as a passer. Diarra is a very good athlete, but the injury ruined his season. Reed is a great athlete for his size. Karaban is a good athlete but slumped as a shooter. Stewart is an excellent athlete. I don't see the lack of athleticism; the passing was garbage relative to the previous two years. Newton, Spencer, Castle and Jackson were great passers with high BB IQ's.

Liam is average at best athlete as you saw how hard it was for him to beat anyone off the dribble and got coninuously beat off the dribble on D, Diarra was a decent athlete but like you said his injury hampered him, Reed I will give you for his size, Karaban is below average athlete who was in the bottom of the NBA draft combine.

Furphy's skill set sounds a little like Henefeld. 6'6", high basketball IQ, sees the whole court, a jack of all trades, the question is his three point shooting.

Not that anyone on this board remembers Nadav : )
Beat me to it. Foreign, not much known about him, unassuming, looks fairly unathletic but has good BBIQ and not in any conversation re: roster rotation. Sounds like The Dove.

Some extra athleticism is always good but having multiple freak athletes isn't as important as shooting and passing. With the returning players, most are athletic. Solo is billed as a great athlete but he doesn't really "play athletic" for whatever reason. Hopefully that changes for his junior season. Stewart and Ross are both athletic. Reed is physically imposing if not super athletic. I think we will be fine in that department with another addition or 2.

Perfect if true !

Our designations of athleticism are very different. Ross and Samson are excellent athletes. The rest? Hassan, even at full strength, was never considered a great athlete. Not bad, but not very good. Reed, fine, for his size. Liam and AK were below average. Stew has moments where he looks like an excellent athlete and far too many where he just looks a step or two slow. Why do you think we couldn't keep anyone in front of us, like, ever? Why do you think we committed 9489 fouls a game? Part of it is technique, but a lot of it is that our guys didn't have the foot speed to switch or play the tight man that Hurley likes to play. It was a freaking layup line some games with our guys constantly trailing and then committing fouls when they couldn't square up.

Furphy (see link below) is 6'4" and identifies as having a high BB IQ and lacking athleticism. He's on the Aussie FIBA National Team at age 18 and has excelled at all levels as he's grown up in their system. He can dunk with two hands so he's not a stiff and he handles the ball better than anyone on our most recent teams other than maybe CS.

If you watch any of the videos of his games or highlights you'll see a guy who handles the ball better than anyone I recall other than (Shabazz/Boat/Kemba), gets anywhere he wants through traffic, and sees the floor so well he makes great passes as he's driving through defenders.

Point / Small Forward comes to mind. People are really sleeping on him, Hurley is super high on Furphy.

Nadav "the Dove" was a great passer and 3 pt shooter used by Calhoun in the late 80s if I recall. I don't see Furphy as that though. Jacob is more polished from an over all game playing in the Aussie G League, U19, U17, club and national team. And I think he's 6'6" now.

Furphy is from Australia, so he likely has better hops.
