I just read the Louisville paper's advance on tonights game linked by Nan, and starting think about how good U of L has been for WCBB in the Big East! I really like Jeff as a person and coach, and the university has done a really good job of promoting their WCBB team. They have developed a great following in the community - didn't they lead the Big East last year in attendance? Tonight might be our biggest crowd all year. ($2 tickets with a Kroger card doesn't hurt!)
I think we are really lucky to have them in our conference, and hope they stay!

Miami, do you remember what happened when Jeffy came to Hartford for his first Big East Tournament? This this was his first head coaching job.

I don't remember - some controversy? I do remember he had a star that we all loved to hate! But regarding her, I think he did a great job of adjusting her attitude - she always had the talent, he just helped her make some changes in her demeanor.
Anyway - I have a short memory so if he did something we didn't like at the time, he has improved since then.

Yeah - after that slug fest can I withdrw my original post!

Actually, it is games like this that do 'toughen up' Uconn - but this is the first really poorly officated game I have seen this year - just a slug fest.

I think that a lot of people are reconsideringtheir view of Louisville and their illustrious coach after this "basketball game". I gather it was a really disgusting event with Huskies getting mauled all night long and yet the foul shots would seem to suggest UConn was the offending party. I have to say that the officiating in women's college basketball is atrocious and getting worse year after year. You'd think that it should be the new age of women's basketball and that it would be drawing some really talented people to ref these games but no, it isn't happening. When some games there are fouls called every second with no one managing the game and instructing the players what will and won't be called and the next game is officiated more like rugby than anything else and little or nothing but blatant assault is called, then there is a serious problem.

BB - I think most of the officials have been around for 15 years, and if you consider the changes in the athletes and the level of competition during those 15 years ... I think they just haven't grown with the game - hopefully they will.

Unfortunately, because the girls are bigger, stronger and more athletic the game is beginning to resemble the men's game more and more. And I don't consider that a good thing.

Are the same bad referees still around because the pay is bad???Better pay better refs. Not a real difficult solution because I imagine some of the men's better refs would switch for more money.

Right. Just like the US has the world's best public schools because their teachers are relatively well paid. (Please don't come back with the nonsense about underpaid teachers in this country - US compensation is better than in Europe).

OPEN UP HIRING REFS TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO APPLY, NO MATTER THEIR BACKGROUND.

WCBB will only get better when they start firing the bottom 10% of the refs every year.

It is opened up to anyone who wants. It's just that no one wants to spend 8 years learning the skills and climbing the ladder for pay.
And there's no firing 'cause they're independent contractors.
Men's side has the same issue.

I just want to point out that your game had three very well used and generally respected officials - only one of whom (Dee Kantner) has a "let em play" reputation.

You had Wesley Dean, who personally fouled Cappie out of a game because she supposedly said something in the paper he didn't like (and that is almost certainly the truth) and Sue Blauch, an official that works a lot of games and the WNBA besides.

Speaking of the men's side, the UConn-UL game played the night before at the Yuck! Center was one of the worst officiated games I have ever seen. Even Jay Bilas was complaining about them which seems out of character to me. Something in the water out there or has the Louisville AD mastered the Jedi Mind Trick?

You raise one interesting point. Just how much is " pay," anyway?

as the nba, and then the men's college game have gone, so now goes the women's game. slowly but surely, it has gotten physical to the point that it is impossible to officiate. the only thing consistent in officiating is that the home team gets more calls , and uconn is no exception to that. btw, check out the louisville women's basketball site, and their photos of last night's game. our girls were not on the receiving end all night long.

After Jeffy's team lost in his first BIG EAST Tournament he went off the deep end. "We are going to FIX THIS!! We are going to fix this tournament!" he said. LOL A rookie head coach and he thinks HE is going to fix the BIG EAST Tournament!

The best part came at an alumni dinner a few months later in Hartford. I asked Geno what he thought of Jeffy's plan to "fix" the tournament. Much to my surprise he was still ripped about. Geno was still outraged. He went on for quite awhile.

Was it due to the opposing coach's approach or the ref.'s or both? Some call it aggressive, some rough, some dirty play.

I never said the refs had anything to do with UConn's loss, I just said the refs were bad. Jay Bilas agreed.
