In past cases, where waivers were denied, former schools were not as supportive of the application.
Known as the "Martelli Rule". That's another thing JC didn't get enough credit for, if you wanted to go he would help you find a new spot. None of that vindictive crap.

Yeah but mostly because the reason for transfer was they weren't good enough to play meanful minutes for the GCOAT

Thought this was probably the case. Thanks URI!

The NCAA’s decision to grant a waiver allowing Tyrese Martin, transfer from Rhode Island, to play without sitting a year at UConn was based in part on URI’s support. In past cases, where waivers were denied, former schools were not as supportive of the application.

Good read with lot's of tidbits.

  • Junior Brendan Adams, who has a foot injury, is not yet practicing with the team. Freshman Andre Jackson and senior Tyler Polley are taking part more fully in the hour-long sessions.
  • Class of 2022 players on UConn’s list of targets include Cam Whitmore, a 6-foot-6 forward from Maryland; Justice Williams, a 6-3 guard from Philly who had a Zoom call with UConn coaches this week, according to Adam Zagoria; Avery Brown, a 6-3 guard from Beacon Falls; and Kyle Cuffe Jr., a 6-1 guard from New Jersey. Bristol’s Donovan Clingan remains a top 2022 priority

Is anyone else surprise that URI supported the waiver? What was their rationale?

It's not usually a zero sum game.

Be good to people and good things will come back to you.

In this case, it cost them nothing (Martin was gone either way). And now Dan Hurley owes them a favor. (Or maybe as @navery12 says he's been paid back).
Also a good point with the zero sum game, they've had a bunch of transfers get immediate eligibility this year so makes sense he'd support Martin like other coaches did for him

And vice versa. Do bad to people and bad things will come back to you.

If a kid is already declaring he's moving on to somewhere else, it would look weird to slow the process of how long until that kid can play for the new school.
