Tyrese Martin NBA Prospect

Tyrese is a high level starting wing in college and I hope he uses his extra year of eligibility. I don’t want this to come off as a slight against him.

But I really don’t think his defense is good enough for a 3nD guy. He knows where to be and is solid at this level, but high end college guys have their way with him frequently. He’s a distant 4th I’d argue defensively on his own team. Others have highlighted the obvious shooting concerns, finishing issues, and lack of height for a stretch 4. I don’t think he has a serious shot at making the NBA after this season.

With that being said, would it shock me if he hung on the butt of a summer league roster this year? No, but I think people overestimate how much that means for your chances of making the league.
 
My sleeper NBA guy on this team is actually Whaley. Sam Veccine, a connected NBA Draft writer for the Athletic, posted a tweet awhile back showing off Whaleys effectiveness on defense. Like others pointed out, late in the draft or UDFA teams are looking for guys who can potentially fill out their rotation, and Whaley fits the profile as a defensive specialist with some amount of shooting potential(mechanics aren’t terrible).

Not saying he’ll make it for sure, but give me the athletic 6’9 defensive specialist for better odds of making it as a role player.

Comes down to who can he defend. Martin can defend 1,2,3 and if he can shoot and finish at the basket...what else do you want off the bench?

He's a good physical athlete, can shoot 3s, and is rugged and can rebound and finish inside.

Martin is horrible finishing near the basket, especially if he has to do any contortions or adjustments near the rim.

He is effective on straight line drives to the basket but he is nowhere good at attacking the rim. He absolutely cannot put the ball on the floor and break down his defender.

He gets less effective against taller, leaner, NBA bodies as well.

He does good in college because he can still overpower some of the players and he is a few weeks away from being 23.

I appreciate what he does for the team and wish him well, but playing in the NBA isn't in his future.

this is accurate. Going to need to show he can shoot, but if he can defend the 4 and 5, maybe he can be a two way early on in career.

Probably not, but he is gonna get a look. I think his finishing is better than you guys are saying.

what is he at the rim this year.

Tyrese reminds me a lot if Donny Marshall, same size, same position, similar playing style, good rebounder, decent 3 point shooter, etc.

That isn't true he has done it both last year and this year. The problem is he normally goes with an off balance shot at the rim and can't really pass well enough when he does beat his man. He has to be able to become tougher player when going to the basket. He plays kind of soft when driving nomally finishing it off with a fadeaway or some silly scoop shot. Just go up strong big man.

Agree on his ballhandling. With Gaffney so inconsistent, his steadiness breaking the press is one of the few things helping RJ keep his sanity at this point, I'd think.

He’s a very good athlete but it confuses me how he can’t jump well in traffic when he’s trying to get a shot off near the hoop. Sometimes he’s literally an inch off the ground on these layup attempts
 
I like and respect the guy, the player, teammate.
Program has to get beyond such a player as representative of a starter with NBA chances.

Tyrese Martin was 15/33 for 45% on February 16th last year then he had the craziest regression to the mean I've ever seen play out in college hoops to end the year. He's doing it on a higher volume this year which is great - really hoping he can sustain it this year.

how about jae'sean tate for a tyrese comp? his stats at ohio state are actually pretty comparable -- martin is maybe even a better shooter.

tate went undrafted, played internationally, then found a home on the houston rockets as a role player.

I'm guilty of a little greed....but you're right. Matters not how Boat does...he went in the money round. Hope people will know that as/if he makes the strides,I/ we hope he will. And think UConn.
 
Not saying it will for sure make a difference in his inability to make close shots but NBA spacing I think is something you might have to take a look at when envisioning him in the future. Regardless things have to break right for him I think in order to latch on up there.
