Tuff freethrows 22-4

Hey we shot terrible. I think Geno was pissed that SC pressed with approx 1 minute left and went to the line 22-4
We did not finish at the hoop well all evening. Seemed like just throwing up the ball, not shooting it or protecting the ball with the rim. SC length and offensive rebounding were real advantages for them. We seemed speeded up all over the court resulting in rushed shots that in many cases didn't even hit the rim. On only one occasion, after being town 10 points, were we able to put a run of shots together.

South Carolina plays in the paint, and they are taller. that's a recipe for drawing fouls. How ,many fouls were called on SC breakaways? Clearly, they play a more physical game in the SEC. SC came in playing much stronger in the regionals than UConn did. It was the perfect storm.

Dawn is recruiting a lot of great athletes, they will be dominant for the near future.

I think Sarah missed more shots at the rim in the last two games than she did for the entire season previously.

I was there and here's what he said:

Geno: How about you shake my hand at the beginning of the game?
Dawn: What'chu talking bout Geno.
Geno: I thought we were way cooler than that
Dawn: You don't remember shaking my ____ hand?
(Staff holds Geno back)
Dawn: Don't do that, Don't do that, are you mad cause we won?
Geno is escorted away.
Dawn: Don't play with me, I will beat Geno's ______

That's all I heard

I hope you’re kidding

I know the free throw discrepancy stands out. But that really has been a story all season. UConn is ranked somewhere in the 300’s when it comes to free throw attempts.

I am not and to clarify they did shake hands but Dawn didn't do the pleasantry meeting that coaches typically do after the initial go about. Geno stayed and waited for a bit there, then walked back to his staff.

He wasn't talking about the first run through, it was the second. Dawn isn't required or obliged but he didn't invent something that didn't happen.

I mentioned this before the game. Dawn did the drive by hand shake and kept it moving. Crazy if that's the thing that set Geno off. I suspect he was just frustrated overall.

Of course he didn’t. I for one have never liked Dawns antics. Or how she behaves. But when you disrespect a person by ignoring some of the unwritten rules of being a human being or how to act as colleagues in the same sport I can see how that can come across as something that can set someone off. I don’t doubt Genos account because I don’t find him the lying type. But when you ignore someone directly like that’s a disrespectful gesture in any culture.

Yes, this

There’s nothing nefarious about the free throw discrepancy. The Huskies are a jump shooting team. If they want to draw fouls, they need to go into the paint more. And don’t forget, UConn was fouling intentionally at the end of the game

Not commenting about the refs tonight, but for the record South Carolina opponents only averaged 10.7 free throw attempts per game this season. And in the SEC semi's South Carolina beat LSU 83-77 and only committed 7 fouls; in their SEC finals loss to Texas they only committed 10 fouls.

Nobody is discussing a major flaw in UConn’s game tonight. Rebounding, especially offensive rebounds. SC kicked our butts in both. Second chance points was a major factor in our defeat. Also, to win with these two deficiencies, UConn needed to be hot from the 3 point line and we weren’t. Nobody played their A game tonight.

If you as referees decide you are not going to call body fouls, holding, hand checking etc. you are giving the game to the more physical team. 22-6 is outrageous.
Good point! The refs work for the NCAA and let's face it - they suck up to the P-4, especially the P-2. This is so because the NCAA only survives only by the grace of the big conferences. Sadly, the BE has little clout or prestige with the NCAA.

Also, on a practical basis, once the calendar turns the page to a new year, we have little opportunity to play any teams other than tomato cans in the BE. While we do that, the SEC runs a gauntlet during January and February. At the same time, we are required to play teams in the BE that couldn't even ride the bench for UConn.

Rule one of competition is that you don't get better playing down talent wise.

I disagree. The NCAA owns the tournament. That can be viewed as a problem. However, when the Big Conferences take over basketball, things will change quickly and maybe not for the better. Bottom line, the BE is not good for our basketball teams right now. Times are changing.

NCAA may own the name , but what can prevent the P-4 conferences from taking over the post season tournament ala CFP?

On the other hand, South Carolina was called for 17 last year. Weird how we shoot better when the other team is called for fouls.

Madison Booker...Texas...excellent player...had 6 points shooting 3 for 23 from the floor...shot no
free throws. While she sure was cold she did keep on shooting. If she had been merely bad,,,instead of
terrible Texas might have won. Maybe Azzi and Sarah would have kept on missing in our game but still I would
have approved our best players being way more aggressive in looking for their own shot.

Sarah was obviously being mauled with no fouls called which completely frustrated her and caused her to rush shots whenever she had the ball. Driving to the basket she was continually being held or fouled. This took her completely out of her rhythm and ithere can be little doubt that such antics were a deliberate tactic surely drawn up by none other but Staley. The question is why was the officiating so one-sided and completely ignoring this? That is the most disturbing thing.

Will the NCAA investigate? Don't hold your breath because imo the NCAA got exactly what they wanted after Geno's tirade in the Elite 8 lambasting the decisions the NCAA has made about going to two sites - always west of the Mississippi - instead of regionals as in the past for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. Sure that didn't sit well in the NCAA's exec offices.

SC was the more aggressive team and the more aggressive team usually gets the calls. That being said, there was definitely a huge discrepancy. I do wish Geno would’ve worked the refs a little more like Don does.

But my point was that this year SC did not foul much regardless of opponent. A 39 game sample is a pretty big one. That being said...bummer of a loss!
