While it's rare for a true frosh to start at QB, at the highest level of college football, it does happen.

Danny Etling, a true frosh at Purdue, was brought into Purdue's loss to N. Ill on Sept 28th and had these numbers for basically playing one half of that game.

They had a bye week and now he gets the start at home vs Nebraska. A home grown kid who grew up dreaming of playing QB for Purdue. Good story. (Purdue is 1-4)

I think we can expect, or maybe hope for these kind of numbers. Unless he's got ability, like the kid at FSU, we really need to be ready for some growing pains. I'm not sure the average fan will understand this.

Careful, you might get accused of being a know - it - all! LOL.

I agree though. It's a little bit comforting that both Pasqualoni and Weist have made public statements that they have been bringing along Boyle in anticipation of him getting his number called, but you don't know what the kid is going to do when the lights are on and the pass rush is coming, and there will be many of the same kinds of mistakes we've been seeing as of late - the difference is that it will be a freshmen making the mistakes, and there should be a steep learning curve as each game goes by rather than a plateau with an upper classmen.

It remains to be seen what the reality of what Chandler Whitmer's response and what he does going forward will be in this situation - the public statements have all been exactly what they should be, and having a veteran upper classmen backup for Boyle for a year and half, would be a great thing. Tough pill to swallow for a competitor though. But the backup is always only one snap away from being a starter.

Expectations should be tempered, a valid case could be made that Whitmer would give us a better chance to win.

Hope for the best, but think of this as something that will pay dividends next year vs BYU and Boise.

I remember Cody doing very well his first game vs West Virginia (Kashif dropped a perfectly thrown TD pass) but he redshirted and had a better running game, Zach was pretty bad out of the gate (3 int vs Cincy) and he was a 3rd year player when he took over.

Hopefully Boyle delivers a Cody type of performance but our D (and crowd noise) really needs to win the game Saturday.

Have you used your red shirt yet? It's not too late. Anyone under 400 posts can stop and come back next year. Maturity is important and another year might do you some good.

Everything you say will be gold, but will you be able to look at yourself in mirror knowing you spent that much time on an internet message board?

Only in CT do we look down our noses on the diehards who spend time here and the money on the program.

Only on an internet message board do you devalue someone's opinion for having a life outside their computer.

Nobody's devaluing anything. You're the one looking down your nose at others.

If your the best and give UCONN the best chance to win then you should play. Redshirt means nothing unless you are trowing this season away. My guess is the seniors and coaching staff are not. If you want to give up, that's fine Cody

It is not giving up it is looking at what is best for the program in the future.

This is a lost season and the chances of playing in a bowl are slim to none, why give up a kids redshirt for that if you think he can be special down the road? There is a reason Joe Cox started at UGA 5 years ago while Aaron Murray saved his red shirt. Same reason why Tyronne Swoops is still red shirting this year at Texas.

When you are 0-4 with loses to Buffalo and Townson you have to look at the future.

It's not a lost season, because we haven't yet started our conference schedule. Had the program not chopped off the head and right arm, and started trying to grow a new one, I'd agree that the season was over - but it's not.

It's also not a lost redshirt. He may need it down the road due to injury.

I like that he will have this season to get used to the college game and hit the road running next year.

This may be a blessing in disguise to have Tim as QB now.

Don't forget Dan O came in under similar circumstances (4 games into the season) and was something like 4-12 before he had the miracle finish (4 W's) at the end of his sophomore year which resulted in a 6-6 record and unanticipate win over Iowa State. (I believe they were 3 TD underdogs to Seneca Wallace and the Cyclones).

And Dan had a rough learning curve against MAC-USA-and (2-3) Ex -BE BCS teams. A lot of interceptions.

Tim will be facing much tougher competition the rest of this year and all of next year. It may not be pretty, but I'll remain behind him 100% throughout because, as Dan O illustrated, the learning curve is steep between being a heralded HS QB and an inexperienced college QB.

Recognizing this, I hope the fans show up to give Tim and the team support throughout because, as bad as this season may turn out, we start next year with a QB that has earned battle scares, and it may have the potential to be something special for everyone.

I don't think the red shirt is being wasted. UConn may be better than 6-6 (as Dan O was) at the end of his sophomore season because of the experience he gets this year. You can practice all you want......but unless you fight a real battle against other opponents........you're still inexperienced.

I don't want to wait another 8 games to start a new beginning.

Well said.

The experience Tim gets this year may help us win a couple games next year, if so then burning his red shirt is worth it, if he helps us win this year it's gravy.

That said I hope we get some gravy.

Make the valid case for Whitmer.

The case that Whitmer would give us a better chance to win vs South Florida is the fact that he helped us beat Maryland, Louisville, and Pitt last year while Boyle was playing against high school kids and the fact that QB's in general tend to struggle their first time around the block.

I assume that the coaches see something in Boyle that make them think he can outperform Whitmer but I doubt it is a slam dunk, if it were he would have already played.

If you're good enough, you play as a freshman. Florida State stud is a freshman, no?
