Trouble at tOSU

If he is let go, does that mean the players have a free pass to transfer outside of the transfer window?

Ouch. Story released last night; incident on May 6.
The world makes it unbelievably easy nowadays to not drive drunk (cell phones to call a friend, Uber, at home breathalyzers, etc.) and some people still find a way. As a 55 year old man who:
-is supposed to be a role model for his players

-gets paid over a million dollars per year of tax payer money

-and is one of the most well known representatives of his university

I hope McGuff is let go.

I never understood the hype around Kevin McGuff, and I don't think I ever will. He's yet another example of a decidedly average guy who could get certain coaching jobs because he had a chance to pad his coaching resume in his 20s while a school/WNBA legend had to wait until her 40s to get similar opportunities.

That said, I hope he gets help if he's an alcoholic. Alcoholism is a disease, and while I understand why its sufferers receive far less sympathy than suffers of other diseases, it doesn't make it any less of an actual pathology. That doesn't excuse the criminal aspect of this, and I do hope that his punishment clearly reflects the serious nature of the act as well as his stature within the Columbus, Ohio community (as a father, husband, leader of a program of young women). If this incident results in him being fired, so be it.

McGuff was arrested after a witness reported that a vehicle "struck several curbs and drove through the lawn of a residence."

"Due to the totality of the circumstances including, Kevin's car parked partially in his yard, Kevin not being able to roll down his window, unnatural duration it took to respond to basic questions, the poor performance of the in-car tests, the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person, and the clues that I observed during his Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, I placed Kevin under arrest for OVI," the arresting officer wrote in the police report, per Eleven Warriors

Yikes. No skin in the game from my perspective, but what a dumb series of decisions on McGuff's part to get himself in hot water. I'm not sure if this will result in his firing - I have no idea of his contract or what offenses could be considered "fireable", but a DUI/OWI is a felony in Ohio, so if convicted, he's a felon, correct?

First Felony DUI / OVI Sentencing In Ohio:

The sentence for a first felony DUI / OVI conviction includes incarceration, a license suspension, and other penalties. The minimum jail sentence is 60 days in jail or prison (the minimum doubles if there is a high test or refusal), and the maximum period of incarceration is 30 months in prison. The minimum license suspension is three years, and the maximum license suspension is a suspension for life. For a felony DUI / OVI license suspension, no driving privileges can be granted for the first three years of the suspension. In addition to the incarceration and license suspension, the sentence involves vehicle forfeiture, an ignition interlock, yellow license plates, and drug/alcohol treatmen

most contracts have a very subjective “morals”
clause if osu is looking for a reason to get rid of the coach for chance they could use this.

This says he was charged with a misdemeanor

Not to make excuses for McGuff, but the description of his behavior from the article are very similar to the signs and symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis that can occur in folks with diabetes.

Not saying this is the case, especially as the article does not discuss the results of any blood alcohol testing, if it was done.

From my days of riding an ambulance as an EMS provider, I have seen firsthand people who you would swear were drunk as a skunk (including having "fruity" breath that can be taken as the odor of alcohol) who were in reality suffering a diabetic crisis.

Sometimes we need to step back and wait for things to play out before we call for someone to be fired...

I can see the diabetic crisis as a possible reason as my father went through those when he was alive. Several articles noted that McGuff declined the breathalyzer, however.

The OSU SBNation page also notes he apologized to the team for his actions, which would imply he's acknowledged being in the wrong. If there was a medical issue, one would hope it would have been identified before the news came out as the arrest happened a week ago.

Like all of us, I'm sure, I'm just relieved that no one was physically injured due to his actions. We've all seen too many stories when driving impaired injures or kills an innocent fellow driver or bystander.

My heart also goes out to his family, who not only have to cope with their husband and father's actions and illness, but must also do so in the public eye. While he's a public figure and is subject to the media attention that comes with that, his wife and kids didn't necessarily sign up for living through a family crisis under media scrutiny. I wish them strength.

yeah it’s easy to forget the impact on families children when you’re in the public guy
I know it comes with the territory and can only echo your thoughts

Just my $0.02 on this topic — This is a really sad situation for everyone involved, especially because someone could’ve been injured, or worst, died. Thankfully none of that happened. However, because we all need forgiveness, support and guidance at some point in our lives, I’m hoping that Coach McGuff is given the necessary help required, to recover from this. I can’t imagine the embarrassment his employer, his wife and kids are enduring right now, but I have no doubt they’ll get through this together.

I doubt McGuff’s DUI has caused any pangs of institutional embarrassment at tOSU. This is the school where the President joked that he was “hoping the [football] coach doesn’t dismiss [him],” in response to a question about possible termination of the football coach for knowingly using ineligible players.

McGuff's "incident" was May 6th. Bryn Martin reopened her recruitment May 12th. Her Ohio State commitment includes a video showing McGuff with his arm around her. So he's back recruiting for Ohio State WBB without any statement whatsoever by him or Ohio State about the incident, his status, or any path forward. Apparently nothing happened! This is completely disgusting. I'm all for rehab and possible reinstatement, but there's no rehab without admission of guilt. Major loss of respect for OSU.

I doubt you had much respect for OSU before this haha but the video from her commitment was likely from her visit back in September 2024, since her family are wearing the same outfits they wore them. So, this recruitment seemed more like Bryn having a change of heart rather than McGuff out actively recruiting her.

Thanks for that clarification on the visitation date. Actually my respect level for Ohio State and McGuff has been higher than you seem to think, but definitely lower now given the deafening silence coming out of Columbus. Do you have any info that hasn't been publicly released?

Apologies then. I'm not particularly a fan of him. Stemming from overall results through the years but also the previous handling of his former Associate Head Coach Klein and that whole thing.

As for knowledge, I have none. The only language out from the school is "The department is in communication with Coach McGuff and monitoring the situation closely. This is an ongoing, personal legal matter, and the department will share additional information at the appropriate time." [which, I assume you've read.] So, that reads to me the school is waiting for the legal proceedings to move forward. They are typically tight-lipped on these types of things [Aaron Bradshaw over on the men's side during the season].

But I'd be surprised if he was fired, Mark Few only got some suspensions. I think Gonzaga waited a month before they made an official statement on Few's DUI.

Even it it were a medical issue, operating a vehicle while impaired (OVI) also includes having a medical condition that impairs your driving. In my opinion, if a person has a medical condition that has the potential to cause them to drive as McGuff was reportedly driving, they shouldn't be driving any more than someone drinking too much alcohol should be on the roads. For whatever it's worth, McGuff was asked a few times if he was taking any meds and he answered no.
