Tristen Newton Remind Anyone of Gilbert Arenas?

It's funny that you brought up Dennis Johnson because this morning before I saw your post, I went back and looked at Dennis Johnson highlights to see if I could comp DJ to either Castle or Newton... I came up with a young DJ on the Supersonics (athletic and strong) being a really good comp to Castle and an older DJ on the Celtics (more earth-bound and wiser/sage) being more like Newton. Interesting, eh?

DJ, one of my all time favorites. Newton and Castle do not remind him of him.
 
I'll play this game.

If you look at Tristan's tape, the way he guards the ball with his off-arm/wrist, the way he lowers his shoulder into the defenders chest to drive and escape, the last second two-hand securing of ball before going up on his one leg opposite hand release, and lastly the look of his release on Jumper reminds me of Anfernee Hardaway. Not as tall, or nearly athletic, but I find his motions are reminiscent.

Nope. Not even a little like Arenas. In fact. The comparison makes me wonder if you ever watched Arenas play before.
 
Why would Caron Butler's wing man remind us of Newton?
 
closest comp to Newton we've had in the last 20 years is Castle.

both 6'5-6'6 combo guards that can get a triple double on any given night. Castle has more talent but probably wont put up the numbers Newton does this year. Newton is a much better shooter right now. Castle is stronger and more athletic. Both good finishers, passers, and defenders with high BBIQ.

I don't remember the young DJ, but old DJ that led the C's is what I remember. He was not an Uber-Athletic guard, like we see throughout the league now. He was a very good defender, mainly due to his BBIQ and excellent anticipation. Newton's offensive game is what reminded me of DJ.

Frankly, I don't have much an opinion on Newton's defense. UConn does a lot of switching on the perimeter, and when they don't when the switch would be problematic, Hurley wants his players to go over the screen with the defender of the screener hedging down and blocking the passing lane. I did noticed that on a number of defensive sets in the first two games too many of our perimeter defenders going under the screen, something to keep an eye on when they start facing better teams who can exploit that.

Totally agree that DJ was elite defensively - especially early in his career. :)
 
Hate to say reminds me a little of Tate George. Better in all the skill set requirements but similar in the fact he’s a big guard who’s not really fast but can get to his spots.
 
Forget about comparisons, he’s the greatest Newton since Sir Issac, and he has a Natty already under his belt. This year he’ll defy the laws of gravity for #2!

It was neck and neck with Fig but the title clinched it.
